I love it because it is great for nature lovers. Most of Fairlop is made up of forests, fields, and open spaces. Fairlop Waters is good for fishing and water sports and Redbridge Sport Centre is located in Fairlop too. Fairlop resident

I think Redbridge is a great place to live if you like shopping. Going to The Mall in Ilford is a really good way to spend a weekend, and the High Streets around the borough, like the ones in Barkingside and Wanstead, are good places to find smaller, individual shops. Redbridge resident

Music Lovers

Redbridge Living

I think the borough’s music lovers should consider attending a special biennial festival held at the Royal Albert Hall; all Redbridge schools participate in the event, which is organised by the Redbridge Schools’ Choral Festival. It’s a great way for the borough’s children to experience singing on stage at the prestigious concert venue. Redbridge resident

Latest News - Customer Parking & Street Licencing Redbridge Council has agreed to consider propositions to ease parking problems and to eradicate inconsistencies in parking restrictions around borough. This consideration followed a consultation meeting between the Leader Cllr Keith Prince and Redbridge Chamber of Commerce delegates as well as other local business associations. Issues raised involved frustration around customer parking and access to local shops and restaurants. Another issue raised was the possibility of street licences for shops and restaurants to enable them to trade outside their premises.

Redbridge offers its residents the best of both worlds; it is a London borough with easy access to the capital and its location gives it a uniquely Essex flavour. It couldn’t be easier for residents to get around with overland train stations, Tube stations, and the extensive London bus network. Redbridge resident

Tackling Burglary Redbridge Safer Communities Partnership has pledged to help tackle burglary and hate crime as new plans were agreed for making the Borough safer. Other priorities in the plan which was agreed at Cabinet on 3rd May are anti-social behaviour and violence against women.

I love living in Redbridge. There is so much to do. There’s the Kenneth Moore Theatre and The Mall in Ilford, lots of libraries, fabulous parks, and a great leisure centre to name just a few. Redbridge resident

Redbridge Police, Redbridge Council, the Ilford Business Improvement District and the Ilford Recorder are joining forces to make people aware of the costs involved to deal with unnecessary litter. There will be a series of special high visibility days involving police officers and council workers. Repeat offenders will be given a £60 on the spot fine.

FAKIN’ IT! How to fake a tan

ver since a bronzed Coco Chanel returned from her Mediterranean holiday in the 1920s, the tan has been the hottest summer fashion accessory. Women go ga-ga for that golden glow. Unfortunately dermatologists do not...and frankly I’m not wild about contracting skin cancer either. There are many things I will do in pursuit of beauty but risking my health isn’t one of them. So what is a girl to do? The only sensible way forward is to fake it. But, how can we achieve that gorgeous ‘just returned from St. Moritz’ glow rather than that ‘I’ve just been Tangoed’ day-glo! Well, there’s no denying that for a completely flawless finish a salon or a spa is your best option. The full treatment may include exfoliation, moisturising and airbrush bronzing. You’ll feel like a movie star afterwards... the only downside is the price. However, for a special occasion it’s well worth the outlay. For those of us without bottomless pockets, we’re left with the DIY option. Don’t be disheartened. A good finish is not hard to achieve, you just have to follow a few rules.

Set aside some time where you won’t be interrupted. Shave your legs, then exfoliate your skin with a body scrub in the shower. Pay special attention to rough areas like elbows and knees. Dry skin absorbs more tanning lotion and orange bits are so not sexy. Rub a little Vaseline over your nails and cuticles to prevent them from staining. For the most natural results, choose a fake tan just a shade darker than your normal skin tone. Apply the tanner limb by limb. Start with your legs, smoothing the lotion over the shins and calves before lightly sweeping it over the ankles and tops of the feet. Move on to the hips, stomach and torso, then the shoulders and the arms: if you

can enlist the help of your partner or a friend to reach the trickier bits, so much the better. For facial skin, use a preparation designed especially for this area.. Cleanse and exfoliate, but don’t moisturise as it may affect the results. You can apply a little moisturiser under the eyes as it’s more flattering to leave this area of skin slightly paler. Remove the tanner from your palms with a damp, rough flannel. Don’t forget to clean down the sides of each finger too. Finally, allow all areas to dry for ten-fifteen minutes before dressing and refrain from indulging in any activity which may make you sweat, at least for a few don’t want streaks!

The iPhone 4

A Stellar Smart Phone SPECIFICATIONS: Size: Dimensions 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm Weight: 137 g Display: Type: LED-backlit IPSTFT, capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors; Size: 640 x 960 pixels, 3.5 inches Memory: Phonebook: Practically unlimited entries Camera: Primary: 5 MP, 2592 x 1944 pixels, autofocus, LED flash, check quality Features: CPU: 1 GHz Apple A4 processor; Messaging: SMS (threaded view), MMS, Email, Push Email; Browser: HTML (Safari) Battery: Stand-by: Up to 300 h (2G) / Up to 300 h (3G) Talk time: Up to 14 h (2G) / Up to 7 h (3G); Music play: Up to 40 h

s an owner of the much sought after iPhone 4, I really have no complaints. It’s the ideal size for a cellular phone, being slightly thicker than the iPhone 3G (with the height and width close to that of a playing card), but with a much longer battery life than that of most other “smart” phones. The iPhone 4 offers GPS mapping, a front facing camera, high definition screen quality and “face time” calling. One of iPhone 4’s technologies is the “face time” calling. This feature enables the user to call another iPhone 4 user and video chat while they are both using a wi-fi source. Keep in touch with family and friends and actually see the smiles on their faces. With all of the new applications available for iPhone 4’s camera / video camera, you’ll be capturing fun moments and uploading them to all the social networks, youtube or sending via email. A phone with stellar call quality, able to interface with apple software; iPhoto and iTunes, the iPhone 4 is a real winner.

The Google Ne us One SPECIFICATIONS: Dimensions: 119 x 59.8 x 11.5 mm Weight: 130 g Type: AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors Size: 480 x 800 pixels, 3.7 inches Video:Yes, D1 (720x480 pixels)@ min. 20fps Camera: 5 MP, 2560х1920 pixels, autofocus, LED flash OS: Android OS, v2.1 (Eclair) Battery:Talk time Up to 10 hours (2G) / Up to 7 hours (3G)

he Google Nexus One features the latest Android operating system. The Nexus One has approximately 10 hours of talk time and about 5 hours of web browsing time. Of course, use of the numerous apps and brightness settings on the phone can diminish battery capacity during the day. The phone contains a 1 ghz “Snapdragon” Processor and 512 MB of RAM, which makes the phone speedy enough to handle any kind of application available on the Android market. All of these apps look fantastic on the high definition 480x800, 3.7 inch touch screen. The phone also has a five megapixel camera with an LED flash. Call quality is very clear through the use of two noise cancelling microphones.

Wellbeing Back Again

Three Simple Exercises to relieve back pain In order to achieve a strong, healthy, In order to achieve a strong, healthy, stable back, regular exercise is required. The exercises should strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, and also the abdominal and oblique muscles that encircle the trunk like a corset. Those of us stuck at desks for most of our working day can try these exercises whenever we have a few minutes spare. Try 10-15 repetitions and hold each position for a count of 15. 1. While sitting at your desk, put feet flat on the floor and hands on the edge of the desk. Push back, arching your spine into a convex

Bend elbows to support upper body and, using abdominal strength, lift heels while keeping the back straight. 3. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, about half a metre from a wall. Face the wall and lean against it using hands, the back should be straight. Reach up with right arm and simultaneously lift left leg backwards and upwards. Repeat on the opposite side.

Your Recipes for Healthful Living

Beet Salad with Feta Cheese INGREDIENTS 1 bunch red beetsl 1 bunch golden beets 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese 1 cup baby green salad leaves, rinsed and dried 1/2 cup extra virgin olived oil 1 lemon Maldon sea salt, to taste (N.B. Any cup will do as a measuring cup. The beauty of a salad is you can make as much or as little as you want... just keep roughly to the same proportions and you can’t go wrong) Serves 4 as a starter or 2 light lunches

Courtesy of Garrett Ziegler

Preheat the oven to gas mark 6/200C PREPARATION OF BEET SALAD WITH FETA CHEESE: 1 Tear or cut the beet tops from the beefs, leaving about an ince of stalk attached. Wash and dry them thoroughly. 2. Place beets in a roasting pan or on a flat baking sheet. Drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt. Roast for 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the beets. Test for tenderness after about 30 minutes of cooking by piercing the largest beet with a knife. If the knife easily enters the beet with only a small amount of resistance, it’s done. And the smaller ones will be, too. 3. Remove from over and let cool for 2C minutes or so. 4. Slip the skins off the beets. They should slip off easily, but use a parking knife on any stubborn spots. 5. Cut the beets into 1 cm/1/2-inch cubes, and toss in a stainless steel mixing bowl with enough olive oil to coat them. 6. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze one half into the bowl, gently stirring to combine and checking the flavour to taste. 7. Season to taste with the sea salt. 8. Whisk together 3 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp of the remaining lemon juice then toss the salad leaves in this dressing in a saparate bowl. 9. Spoon the beet mixture onto the centre of a salad plate and top each portion with about 1 tbsp of crumbled feta cheese and about 1/4 cup of the dressed salad. Serve immediately.

A Good Read

After the Armistice Ball – Catriona McPherson

The Last Polar Bears – Harry Horse

This evocative first novel by Catriona McPherson recalls a time long-forgotten - those missing years following the end of the First World War. Into this setting she brings a new detective character – the seemingly guileless socialite Dandy Gilver – and a scandal, the apparent theft of the Duffy diamonds. Like all good detective stories, however, there is much more to the story – and to the characters – than meets the eye. In Dandy Gilver, McPherson creates a sympathetic and initially reluctant detective, whereas her villains and victims are by turns chilling and complex. The novel also explores the social norms and niceties of the time in real detail: one of the central twists of the plot is based on the carefully euphemistic language used by the doctor who attends to the Duffy family, and the shadow of war, and how it affected the young men of Gilver’s generation, is never too far away. McPherson strikes a balance between action, dialogue and introspection so that the reader just has time to think it out before being drawn into the next stage of the drama, and she also makes excellent use of the surrounding Scottish landscapes, which are drawn in loving detail. As the novel moves towards its conclusion, it becomes a real page turner. Appealing to crime fans and social historians alike, this is an excellent read.

The best children’s books, as everyone knows, work on two levels, appealing to both children and adults – and here is a case in point. ‘The Last Polar Bears’by Harry Horse follows the adventures of Grandfather and his dog, Roo, as they journey to the North Pole in search of the last polar bears (and, perhaps, some ice cream, too), and will keep children gripped and adults chuckling all the way through. The two explorers set out, with their equipment loaded onto a golf trolley, and sail away on ‘The Unsinkable’. When they arrive at the North Pole, they are met by hundreds of penguins, who observe them as they battle against setbacks to complete the last stage of their journey. Grandfather narrates the story in a nononsense, matter of fact way – it is Roo the dog who is the more fanciful of the pair – but the words only tell part of the story, and there is much more to be learned from the beautifully drawn pictures: the penguins’ general store in particular, is an absolute delight. Always treading that fine line between fantasy (the ice cream fields on the Great Bear Ridge) and reality (the note on the first page which tries to explain Grandfather’s insistence that there were penguins at the North Pole!), this is a marvellous story which will reward reading again and again.

Community Health HYPERTENSION... Hear it from Find It Here GP

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) Hypertension is the medical word for high blood pressure. It means the heart is pumping blood (which supplies food and oxygen to the cells essential for our very existence) at a pressure which exceeds the norm. Blood pressure is expressed as 2 numbers differentiated by a dividing line or stroke e.g. 140/90. The top figure (systolic) represents the pressure at which the upper chambers of the heart beats and contributing factors affecting this figure can be increasing age and emotional upset, while the lower figure (diastolic) represents the pressure of the lower chambers and when raised signifies a problem with the heart. When measured, the figures will differ from person to person and even for the same person at various times of the day. It is lower when resting or during sleep, increasing at periods of high energy e.g. intensive gym work-out or running a marathon. The normal range for adults should not exceed 140/90, (130-135/85

if the person is diabetic). The range for children and adults may also vary. Hypertension is fortunately rare in children, except those with kidney problems and certain heart conditions. It is however important that blood pressure in adults over 40 years, be checked at least once annually, this helps in knowing one’s normal range. Monitoring hypertension is equally important if one is overweight, suffers from diabetes and or even so, if one is of an Afro-Caribbean descent. Interestingly, healthy people may be unaware of their raised blood pressure as it sometimes gives no symptoms until it causes a devastating illness like a stroke or heart failure as we have seen many a time in practice to both the young and old alike. It’s no wonder hypertension is often referred to as the‘silent killer’. So get your blood pressure checked at your GP surgery or pharmacy, especially if you consider yourself as being among the‘at risk’groups as stated above. Remember, lots of exercise, low salt and low fat diet will definitely help and it’s never too late to start. Till next time… Dr Agomo

NICE expects to issue its updated hypertension guidance in August 2011 For more information go to
