What is this book about? The Native American definition of ‘medicine’ The North American Indians would describe the SOURCE method as ‘medicine’, although the word has a much broader meaning in the Native American world view than it does for us. Their definition can help us to be better at helping ourselves in difficult situations in life. For the Native Americans, the term does not refer solely to medication such as an aspirin or an injection for back pain (which is what we usually think of nowadays). In their tradition, anything that helps a person restore themselves to harmony or peace is medicine. Everything that heals body or mind and restores inner equilibrium is medicine. The Native Americans would often go out into the natural world to find suitable medicine and/or advice that would help them to heal a personal problem, asking their ancestors or spirit or animal guides for aid. The first step in the process was to make a clear and firm resolution to solve a very specific problem or clear up a certain matter. The Native Americans firmly believed that the Great Spirit would guide and support them, and by Great Spirit they meant the perfect, original, divine power that created everything and lives within everything. It inhabits every person just as it lives in the sky and the clouds, the stars, the sun and the moon, in plants and animals, rivers, lakes, mountains and, of course, in every stone.
