Understanding and Interpreting Texts Foundations - Single Pack These six Foundation books will help to ensure that children entering Year 3/P4 have a good understanding of texts on which to build their future learning. They will also be beneficial for those children who need more practice in the comprehension skills introduced at ages 5-7, and will provide extra support throughout the school for those children with additional and special educational needs. 2. Speed Up! In just eight weekly sessions, Speed Up! provides a multi-sensory course of help for any child aged 8-13 whose handwriting is illegible, slow or lacking in fluency. Poor handwriting hinders many children’s progress - right across the curriculum. Unfortunately, most handwriting schemes do little to help children who are struggling with this vital skill. Here, at last, is a new and highly effective approach. Developed by a leading paediatric occupational therapist and designed specifically for older children struggling with handwriting, Speed Up! gets to the root of writing difficulties by developing kinaesthetic awareness through multi-sensory activity and exercise. The programme includes:

LDA helps every child achieve their best

Children will have great fun whilst playing this game which helps them to identify and spell out CVC words (Consonant Vowel Consonant) All the consonant fish are coloured blue whilst the vowels are red - this method uses a universally recognised way of learning the difference between consonants and vowels. The letters are in infant sassoon font which has been specifically developed as the most suitable font for children to recognise and is widely used in schools. There are two ingenious levels of play (for up to 4 players). In both games all the fish are spread out onto a flat surface. Each child takes a fishing rod and a game board. In turn, each player catches the appropriately lettered fish in order to make up a word which is pictured on the board. This is a superb educational tool which encourages interaction between children and makes learning fun. The set comes with 40 magnetic fish, 4 double sided work cards, 4 magnetic fishing poles and an instruction guide. Age Suitability: 4 years +

1. Sounds Fun!

2. I Hear with my Little Ear

Spoken language breaks down in to sentences, phrases, words and individual sounds (phonemes), and phonics is the building block on which all spoken and written language is based. This book is all about sounds in words. Written mainly for parents and carers, it’s a fun, useful way of helping children to develop their skills with phonics. By doing this, parents will be supporting their child in developing speech sounds, their spoken and written language, and their spelling. The games are presented in three sections according to where they might be played. Within each section there are syllable games, games for individual sounds within words and rhyming games. The syllable games will be much easier than the other sets of games, so it is best to start with some of these. All games require very little if any equipment - just keen eyes and everyday items! All the games can be played with one child and one adult. They can equally be expanded to include brothers and sisters, friends, grandparents etc. Words are all around us... so go out there and have some fun with phonics! Size: 246 x 168mm portrait. 112 pages.

This collection of 102 active phonic games is the perfect resource for developing children’s phonological skills. The games cover a wide range of skills including identifying syllables, recognising initial and final word sounds, rhyming knowledge and phoneme manipulation. Phonic skills are taught in a multi-sensory way by combining visual, auditory and kinaesthetic approaches to learning. Designed to be played in group settings using little equipment, the activities enable the children to learn in an interactive way and gain knowledge from their peers. Each game has suggestions for making the task harder or easier, helping you to pitch the game at the right level for your group. Contains 144 pages (246 x 168mm) and includes photocopiable materials.

3. I Hear with my Little Ear 2 This book is a companion to Liz Baldwin’s earlier book with LDA, I Hear with my Little Ear, which was a collection of 102 phonic games. I Hear with my Little Ear 2 is a collection of 102 language games designed to help with aspects of language acquisition and use. The book is divided

into four sections focusing on listening skills, language structures, vocabulary development and use of language. Each section provides games addressing different aspects of the communication process. The games are designed to be played in groups. Most are written for use as a whole class, but all are equally applicable to small groups. The games are intended for use by anyone with an interest in extending children’s language development. They are suitable for children from the age of 3 to 11. Most of the games need very few resources and no preparation. Every game has ideas to make the activity easier for those children who are at the start of being able to understand and use the language target. Similarly, there are suggestions for making every game harder for those children who need to have their language skills stretched. Contains 128 pages (246 x 168mm) and includes photocopiable materials. Age Suitability: 3 years +

Dyslexia | Literacy 179 1. ACE Spelling Dictionary The ACE Spelling Dictionary is now even better that it was! With this fully revised new edition, we have made a number of important changes. This includes updating and extending the vocabulary, giving more alternative spellings, more plural forms and more ‘sound-alike’ words with meanings. The middle section is a darker blue to make it easier to find the right page. It is clear that pupils with spelling difficulties often experience problems with the whole curriculum and lose confidence with writing. The ACE Spelling Dictionary breaks through these problems. Using the unique 2-page index spread, pupils need only think how a word sounds to find out how to spell it. By simply identifying the first vowel sound, the speller is sent instantly to the page where the problem word is found. The easy-to-use reference system will tempt them to use more interesting words in their writing, enabling them to produce work that they can be proud of. Both patterns and irregularities are highlighted in the dictionary so that pupils learn to spell incidentally. The dictionary includes a clear step-by-step guide to effective teaching with the dictionary, over 20,000 words, a comprehensive list of commonly misspelt words and further learning strategies for spelling. 188 Literacy | Reading Kaos World Chronicles - A structured literacy scheme for KS3-4 students

1

This comprehensive literacy scheme is structured around a series of high-interest, low-reading age stories designed specifically to appeal to older students, including those in special schools (BESD). The page-turning stories are set in a future postapocalyptic world where law and order and life as we know it have broken down. The stories feature two main characters, Travis and Spanna, and are illustrated throughout with atmospheric and gritty illustrations. Pack 2 includes an easier version of each reading book to grab the interest of reluctant readers and enable them to build confidence and fluency while enjoying the same stories as peers and thereby being able to engage with any class discussion work. Once they have read the easier version, most students read the standard version. Each book includes a list of tricky words at the end.

The reading books are supported by books of structured worksheets (also available on the accompanying CD), which offer small, achievable steps by way of word, sentence and text activities. There are also monitor sheets and objective sheets which provide targets and record progress, and certificates with which to reward and motivate students. Each reading book is A5 with 24 pages and black and white illustrations.

The author: Lucas Wellington has been teaching students with BESD in inner city Bristol schools for the last 10 years and is currently part of the senior leadership team of the North Bristol BESD school. For four of these years he was Literacy Co-ordinator, so was involved in buying suitable and engaging reading material, co-ordinating reading intervention programmes and promoting literacy across the school. His dismay at the suitability of the books available for such students led to him creating his own materials to develop literacy, as he became well aware that poor literacy and the stress this causes is a major cause of unsettled behaviour in classrooms.

2. Pull Your Socks Up!

2

Children on the autism spectrum and those with language processing difficulties often find the things we say confusing, especially when we use idioms and non-literal expressions. In this original game, children will have great fun matching 40 commonly heard idioms to hilarious illustrations, and learning what their real meanings are in the process. As players collect pairs of cards, they move their counters up their own stripy sock game board, and the first to reach the top of their sock wins the game. Pull Your Socks Up! is a hugely entertaining way of enriching children’s spoken and written language, and it helps players to understand some of the misleading things people say. Contains 80 cards (61 x 88mm), 4 counters and 4 sock game boards (205 x 140mm). Age Suitability: 5 years +
