wo years ago this month, engineer now entrepreneur Sam Yates made solar power a more accessible option to those of us in central Alabama. Continuing a family legacy of careers in the energy field, Mr. Yates opened Eagle Solar and Light as a way to bring renewable energy to our part of the state. Electricity, Then and Now Sam Yates has energy generation in his DNA. His grandfather, E A Yates, was recruited as chief engineer by James Mitchell and Tom Martin in 1912 when AL Power was formed, and later became the 1st President and CEO of the Southern Company. The founders of Alabama Power believed that bringing reliable, affordable electricity to the residents of Alabama would vastly improve their lives. And over 100 years later, Mr. Yates is providing the same opportunity through Eagle Solar and Light.

An Opportunity Founded in Chance The idea to create a business around renewable energy came somewhat by chance for Sam Yates. His daughter Elizabeth and son-inlaw Charles Scribner (“Charlie” heads up the Black Warrior Riverkeeper organization) had solar panels installed on their roof by a company from Huntsville, Alabama. During the process Mr. Yates observed, asked questions, and began researching the solar power industry. His background is in engineering and business, plus he was an employee of Exxon and has experience with procuring fuels. Several factors drove his decision to move forward with the venture. First was the economic factor. The price of solar panels and the components used to convert solar energy into electricity is declining as manufacturers become more efficient. Secondly, technology is progressing to the point where solar panels, wiring, converters, 22

batteries, and generators are easily installed on single-family homes. The equipment is smaller, lighter, and more durable, making the transition from full reliance on utility companies to a hybrid of solar plus traditional power easier. In addition to the technical and financial aspects of investing in solar, Mr. Yates took into consideration the growing concern for future energy needs of our region. Renewable energy is growing in popularity across the county, and is finally showing up on rooftops in Alabama. The Details on Powering Your Home With Solar The first question is always the same - how much does it cost? Mr. Yates structured his panel and conversion network specifications to generate enough electricity to cover the daytime energy consumption (because solar panels don’t run at night). Any more than that would be spending additional money for very little return.

On average, the cost for solar panels, wiring, converters, and installation runs around $3 per watt. Most single family homes won’t require more than 6kw, bringing the rough estimate to $18,000. Current tax laws allow for a 30% investment tax credit for the first year the system is installed, so there is an incentive to incorporate solar before the credit expires in 2019. New Trends in Living Solar The emerging market for off-grid solar living is the second home/rural development sector. “Our most active market is supplying energy to those areas where it is too expensive to run utility lines,” according to Yates. The scenario we discussed was building a vacation home in a remote location that didn’t have access to a traditional utility company. With the option of solar power, using panels, battery storage or a generator, you eliminate the need for traditional utilities when choosing a location.
