Our history: a long tradition of wine making Vines have been grown in the surrounding of Tenuta da Filicaja since the Etruscans. The family purchased the estate in 1452 and since then has been making fine wines here, adding small innovations and improvements developed through experience year after year, century after century and generation after generation. Count Antonio and his collaborators work in the deep, dark cellars, in the sun-filled vineyards and in the open spaces crowded with symbols of the Villa, slowly but constantly improving the products from the Estate. They are well aware that neither tradition nor innovation alone, but the expert combination of both can produce top-quality wines, with the help of particularly suitable geographical conditions in the form of stony soils, burning summers and bitter winters. "Endless words can be used to describe, or rather to try to describe a wine, a taste, a flavour. Some come very close to succeeding, others do not. However, words will never be able to reproduce the exact sensation of the real experience. I invite you to taste in silence and allow yourself to be swayed by your own emotions, leaving the words and the talking to others..." Toscana Merlot IGT “Regina Christina” Toscana IGT “Regina Christina” is dedicated with devote gratitude to Kristina Vasa. The wine is the product of first choice Merlot grapes from our “Fornace” (=oven) vineyard. The grapes are harvested by hand into crates with a specific harvest-transfer-destemming criteria which enables the destemming and the pumping of the must into fermentation tanks within a maximum of 15 minutes after picking the grapes from the vine. It is a supple wine with a balancing level of acidity and spices. The story of Regina Christina Vincenzo da Filicaja was born in Florence in 1642, later to enjoy fame and fortune as a poet. Vincenzo spent more of his life in Al Filicaja (Montaione) than in Florence. From the moment in which Kristina Vasa (1626-1689), Queen of Sweden, converted to Catholicism and moved to Rome, a deep cultural bond and friendship had developed between the poet and the Queen. Out of fear of losing his freedom, Vincenzo was reluctant to support himself by taking public office, and Kristina was there for him when help was most needed. Upon the death of Kristina, the poet finally accepted the office of senator, “not out of ambition, but out of need”. He was later elected Commissary of Volterra and subsequently of Pisa. In 1707 he died in Florence, and was buried in the church of S. Pier Maggiore. When the church was demolished at the end of the 18th century, a memorial stone to Vincenzo was erected in the church of S. Croce.
