What are your favorite foods and drinks? When I think about my favorite food and drink, I think of my favorite memories. I think of waking up in the summers to the smell of buttermilk pancakes on the griddle, coffee brewing, and the sound of my grandmother, mother, and aunt talking in the kitchen. I think of swimming at the town pool and working up a huge appetite, after which my other grandmother would serve us bowls of fresh blueberries and strawberries that had ripened up in the summer sun to the point where they would explode once they hit our tongues. I think of our neighbors in the small town of Summerton that would generously hang bags of deep red, juicy tomatoes on our fence from their garden, and I couldn’t wait to slice them and enjoy them on white bread with mayonnaise. I think of the summer months during my childhood that were spent foraging for blackberries, muscadines, and pears. Years later, I still forage for blackberries and muscadines, and I’m delighted to have my own garden and chickens. I’ve broken up the ground, watered, harvested, and fed my family from the Earth. Living this way has given me a deep appreciation of where our food comes from and even more so the people that make a living growing, preparing, roasting, cooking, baking, hosting, and serving. I have so much respect and admiration for them. They grow thousands of acres of crops, cater events that host thousands of people, serve a consistently amazing menu night in and night out, go to bed dreaming of the flavors they are going to prepare, and every morning, they unlock the doors ready to do it all over again. I’m in awe of them. So this summer, I invite you to indulge. Indulge by living within the season and enjoy the dreamy flavors of fresh produce, locally crafted beer, homemade ice cream, and tasty dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Visit these businesses and taste all that our incredible city has to offer. Cheers!

When you hear of Jimmy’s childhood, you can see how much of an impact it’s had on him— it’s no wonder that his catering business, Southern Way Catering, is known for their Catfish Bites! Entrepreneurism runs through Jimmy’s veins. After 35+ years, Southern Way has become a brand that has fed thousands upon thousands of people, from huge black tie galas to intimate family gatherings. Underneath the Southern Way brand is The Millstone at Adams pond, a historical event venue that sits on acres of natural beauty just outside of downtown Columbia. K ALE CORNBREAD RECIPE WHAT YOU NEED:

½ cup Nature’s Greens ® Kale 1 package corn bread mix 1 egg 1 cup almond milk ½ cup fresh corn ½ cup part skim mozzarella cheese 3 tablespoons sundried tomatoes, finely diced

WHAT YOU DO: Preheat oven to 400°F. Prepare corn bread according to package instructions. Chop kale into small pieces. Stir kale, corn, cheese and sundried tomatoes into cornbread mixture. Pour into a muffin or bread baking pan. Bake for 15 minutes or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool before serving.

K ALE CORNBREAD RECIPE WHAT YOU NEED:

½ cup Nature’s Greens ® Kale 1 package corn bread mix 1 egg 1 cup almond milk ½ cup fresh corn ½ cup part skim mozzarella cheese 3 tablespoons sundried tomatoes, finely diced

WHAT YOU DO: Preheat oven to 400°F. Prepare corn bread according to package instructions. Chop kale into small pieces. Stir kale, corn, cheese and sundried tomatoes into cornbread mixture. Pour into a muffin or bread baking pan. Bake for 15 minutes or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool before serving.
