FIG Admin has been working hard to produce even more added value to your FIG membership and to accommodate the requests and suggestions from our FIG family - we are always listening…. We have articles in this edition of FIG News showing you just SOME of the amazing resources we have added to further improve communication and levels of trade both intra-group and externally. As announced at our Annual Conference in New York, we have recently launched a beta version of „Interforwarder‟ our online register and search engine of APPROVED service providers to the freight industry

“this resource is the only online register of approved companies and early indications are that there is a huge demand.” To partner the Interforwarder site we have produced an ‘Interforwarder Toolbar’ (see below) similar to the ‘FIGBAR’. The toolbar is still being improved and our aim is to make it a ‘must have’ tool for importers/exporters and forwarders alike with hundreds of tools and resources available directly from the toolbar. We are even developing our own ‘Travel Shop’ allowing users to book flights, car rental and hotels (guaranteed lowest internet rates) directly from the toolbar. Best of all, we are offering FREE use of the register and toolbar - we already have over 100 downloads in the first week! There is a nominal fee to be LISTED on the Interforwarder Register although ALL FIG Partners are entitled to FULL MEMBERSHIP completely FREE. Express Parcels, Air Charter, Pharma, Film & Media etc.). Many of the features on the interforwarder site and toolbar (once field-tested) will be available on our NEW FIG website (yes, it’s already built) and FIG Toolbar. Rather than rely on external promotion and advertising, we now have, for the first time, ready access to and direct communication with a marketplace which we can monitor. NB: FIG already has a database of over 20,000 forwarders/importers/exporters/manufacturers and we expect to grow and exploit this valuable resource over the coming months. fig „gold standard‟ - points to performance As previously announced, FIG Admin will continue to grow the FIG family in both size and strength. We are very conscious that during this current downturn in world trade there will be a high number of casualties in the freight forwarding sector and our aim is to ensure that we provide the strongest and most financially secure Partners available around the world to work with our members. It is testament to the strength of our FIG network that we receive (and reject) so many applications from companies wishing to join us. Since our last newsletter, we have had a few instances of late payment. These members either have been or are being replaced. Our unique procedure for dealing with late payment has again proven to be effective and no bad debt has been reported. As announced in New York, FIG is introducing the FIG Gold Standard where FIG Partners are being graded according to performance as either GOLD, SILVER or BRONZE members. An explanation of awards can be found in the secure area of the FIG website. Only attendees of our Annual Conference will be able to meet the FIG GOLD STANDARD (assuming that all other criteria is met). As we introduce additional reports to monitor activity and levels of trade, we will apply these results to our awards criteria. Have you achieved our FIG Gold Standard?

„live chat‟ - fig instant messenger gives „instant‟ results Communication has always been the keyword to being a successful member of any network or group. Although our rules clearly state that all enquiries should be responded to within 24 hours, it can be frustrating if your contact is away or for whatever reason does not respond (maybe your. email was lost/corrupted etc.). We have been asked to consider a method of ‘direct’ contact for urgent or important enquiries. FIG is pleased to introduce the FIG24im instant messenger and chat service. By downloading a small piece of software (you can also operate using web-based software) and being registered by FIG Admin, you will be able to message/chat any FIG Partner using this technology INSTANTLY. And that’s not all… FIG Admin can provide you with a simple hyperlink, which can be embedded in your website (or anywhere else) allowing your customers to chat directly to your sales staff (users do not have to download anything). You can register multiple sales staff - if one is busy the ‘chat’ will automatically go to the next operator. As with ‘Skype’, you can change your ’status’ to for example - ’away from my desk’ or ’busy’. You have complete control. When using the FIG24im, you can see which users are ‟available to chat‟ - you can even leave a message which will be available to read when the user is back online. This is a powerful tool with many features (including project management tools). FIG Admin will make the full user manual available in the members area. This resource is not available outside our group - you will only have contact with FIG Partners (unless you install an ‘instant chat’ link for your customers as described). fig news... in brief IATA has suggested that air cargo volumes are down ….. No surprise there! By July cargo volumes were down by - 11.3% with year end 2009 volumes expected to reach - 14% year on year. This is expected to represent airline losses totalling US$11billion in 2009 - USD$2billion worse than previously projected. Cargo utilization remains at less than 50% despite the removal of 227 freighters from the global fleet. Revenues are not likely to return to 2008 levels until 2012 at the earliest. Airline losses are forecasted to continue into 2010 with the industry expected to post losses of USD$3.8billion based on a limited revival of 5% in cargo traffic.

Vorsprung Durch Technik! Those clever people at FIG Germany have found a creative solution to a tricky problem! Heavy steel coils had previously been packed in opentop containers - a very expensive option! Uwe Schädler (pictured) and his team created purpose-built heavy duty pallets to transport the troublesome consignment using a low-loader vehicle. Naturally the client was delighted with significant cost-savings. FIG Germany is one of the busiest LCL forwarders in Germany and has access to all German ports and airports.

Our FIG Mexico colleagues recently enjoyed a tour aboard the container ship APL Illinois during a group training session in Manzanillo. APL Illinois is a brand new 7000teu vessel, one of the largest in the APL fleet and operates a route from Mexico via LA to Japan and China. APL, part of NOL Group is among the top 10 shipping lines in the world.

FIG Annual Conference 2010 - Singapore

8th - 11th March 2010 The chosen venue for our 2010 Annual Conference is Singapore. Singapore is a tiny country just 26kms x 37kms. The population is diverse with a strong Chinese and Malayan influence. Despite it’s size, Singapore is (as we are sure you already know) the busiest seaport in the world. One of our latest FIG Partners A&C Cargo will host this prestigious event. The venue is the Conrad Centennial - award winning conference hotel. For the first time, Interforwarder delegates will meet FIG Partners during our Gala Dinner (another first) and will have their own one day mini-conference immediately after the FIG event. Since all FIG Partners can join ‘Interforwarder’ completely free of charge, FIG Partners are welcome to also attend the Interforwarder conference which will provide additional business opportunities. Please see FIG website AGM Page for our itinerary for the highlight of the FIG year... As in previous years, FIG Admin will offer „Early Bird‟ discounts of 15% (conference package only) for bookings ‘made and paid’ BEFORE 31 December 2009. long distance interview FIG CEO, Chris Humphrey Interviews Bernard Lavery‌. Bernard Lavery is CEO of The Clover Shipping Company Ltd - FIG UK and a representative of the FIG Board of Members. CH: How did you start in this business? BV: I first started in business in 1988 after resigning as the General Manager of large UK forwarder. Initially I concentrated on general forwarding activities largely around the North Atlantic & Australia/New Zealand trade lanes. Although this was successful, I realised that as a small independent forwarder competing on price with integrators and large consolidators was becoming impossible. In 1993 I launched Clover to look after Project-type work and to bring value added services to the traditional forwarding disciplines. CH: You are from the North East of England (Sunderland) when did you move south? Were you seeking fame and fortune even then? BV: I moved south in the mid 70’s as a student to train as a teacher and I ended up in the south of England purely by accident. I had every intention of going back to the North East but I got used to the milder climate of Surrey (and I also got married). So, you might say in those days I was motivated by weather and love rather than fame & fortune. CH: How did you come to build a successful freight forwarding business? BV: The secret of any successful businesses is to understand, market & develop the company’s unique selling point. In the case of Clover, it is our high level of product knowledge combined with individual customer service care. CH: We have of course all met Colin Christie (Director) - how did you come to work together? BV: Colin & I started in the forwarding industry within months of each other. We first worked together for the transport division of Unilever (30 years ago) for a few years. Although we did not work in the same company again until Colin joined Clover in 2001, we did remain in close contact with each other. Colin brought his knowledge and contacts from the Government sector, which we have steadily built upon over the years. CH: Which sectors does Clover Shipping specialise in? BV: Clover specialises in the Scientific & Defence sectors. CH: What do you look for when using an overseas Partner for the first time? BV: A high level of forwarding competency and good communications skills. CH: You were one of our founder members and attended our very first AGM in London (and every AGM since). How do you think FIG has developed over the past five years. BV: FIG has improved year on year both in the quality of its member companies and the geographical footprint which it can confidently serve. The AGM has developed into both a reunion of business friends and into a learning opportunity for market and product development. 8


CH: You are a representative of the FIG Board of Members… have you had any ‘nasty jobs’ to do? BV: I have had only one or two difficult issues to deal with, mainly concerning credit control. CH: What changes and developments would you like to see in the FIG Organisation. BV: One of the big technical issues facing FIG is how our disparate systems can become more automated. I am sure that most of us use some sort of Track & Trace or Supply Chain systems but interfaces between these systems is non existent. CH: You are obviously well travelled - which is your favourite country? BV: Excluding the UK!. For pleasure, I love travelling in Europe particularly France, it always feels like I have had a good holiday. CH: Last time we met, you kindly took me to lunch in an Indian restaurant - were any of your family Indian or do you just like the food? What other foods do you enjoy. BV: My ancestors are all from the British Isles (England, Scotland & Ireland) and my wife is Turkish, and, needless to say, I love Turkish food. That said, I enjoy most cuisines French & Italian, Indian & Chinese but wherever you go Fish & Chips with mushy peas takes some beating!! _____________________________________________________________________
