Tuesday, November 19. Yes, you read that right. The owners of Half Ass Acres will bring their precious mini-donkeys to the Center for a day filled with laughter and fun.

The mini-donkeys will be dressed in their holiday attire with sleigh in tow. ~~~~~~~~~~ Tuesday, December 17 Guest Entertainer: The group Trademark will join us to celebrate the holidays. Based in Nashville, TN, Trademark started singing together in 2010. In fact, their first public appearance was a flood relief benefit concert to help the victims of the Nashville flood in May 2010. In 2011 they placed in the top 5 groups (out of 250 groups) in the Regional Artist Showcase at the National Quartet Convention. Their concerts have been called fun, energetic, and inspiring.

Life Line Screening Early detection is key to prevention

Monday, November 18 at 8:30 Life Line Screening offers five screenings to avoid a stroke. Tests include stroke / carotid artery screening ($60), heart rhythm ($60), abdominal aortic aneurysm ($60), peripheral arterial disease, and osteoporosis risk assessment ($35). Four-test package: stroke, vascular disease, and heart rhythm: $139 or five-test package add osteoporosis: $149. You must pre-register for screenings.

Beaded Bookmarks Give your time for a great cause

Thursday, November 21 at 1:00 Instructor: Sherry Armstrong Sherry wants to ask you to volunteer your time to help make beaded bookmarks for the Center to sell. All you need to do is donate an hour of your time to help the Martin Center raise funds that will directly benefit our Center and our members. This beaded bookmark craft is easy and fun to make and you will be helping raise money for the Center. They will fit any theme just by changing the colors and shapes of the beads. The group plans to meet monthly. Supplies included.

Elements of Writing 1st and 3rd Mondays at 11:00 Monday, November 4 and 18. December 2 and 16 For fiction, non-fiction and, from time to time, poetry, we discuss some aspect of character or setting.

Several people read a portion of their work and receive friendly feedback from the rest of the group.

Trips and Tours Last Vegas Monday, November 4 Aging pals Billy (Michael Douglas), Paddy (Robert De Niro), Archie (Morgan Freeman), and Sam (Kevin Kline) have been best friends since childhood. When Billy finally proposes to his much-younger girlfriend, all four friends go to Las Vegas to celebrate the end of Billy's longtime bachelorhood and re-live their glory days. Charming Charlie’s and Goodwill Find Your Fabulous

Wednesday, November 20 at 9:30 Charming Charlie made its debut in 2004 with one very colorful and clear mission: help every woman, everywhere, find her fabulous. They are crazy for color and live for sparkle. Why? Because they know accessories have the power to transform both your outfit and your outlook. At Charming Charlie, when it comes to accessories, they believe if it feels good, do it, and if it looks good, do it in every color it comes in. If fashion is fun, then accessories are definitely the life of the party! We will then travel to Spring Hill for lunch and visit Goodwill before heading back to the Center.

TPAC: Menopause The Musical® The hilarious celebration of Women and the Change

Saturday, November 23. Leave the Center at Noon.

The hilarious show Menopause The Musical® has entertained and inspired women from coast-to-coast and internationally.

Menopause The Musical® is the work of writer Jeanie Linders. This uplifting 90-minute production includes parodies from the ’60s and ’70s and ’80s. It culminates with a salute to women who are experiencing “the change”. Set in a department store, where four women with seemingly nothing in common but a black lace bra meet by chance at a lingerie sale.

The all-female cast makes fun of their woeful hot flashes, forgetfulness, mood swings, wrinkles, night sweats, and chocolate binges. A sisterhood is created between these diverse women as they realize that menopause is no longer The Silent Passage!

It is a stage in every woman’s life that is perfectly normal!

Cost: $52.00 includes transportation, parking and door-to-door service. Limited seating. Ticket sales are final.

Martin Center Refund Policy The interest in our programs and activities continue to increase. Many programs require a minimum to make it cost effective or to honor the time commitment for a community volunteer presenter. When you sign up, you are responsible for putting it on your calendar.

Refunds or credits are not given for any activity or event where there is a ticket or a reservation that has to be paid in advance. All activities that require a reservation for a meal or materials that will be provided will forfeit payment unless there is a waiting list and we can fill that vacancy with another member. Credits will be given only if the program is cancelled by the center.

Trips and Tours Martin Holiday Party at Green’s Grocery in Historic Leiper’s Fork Thursday, December 5. Leave the Center at 4:30.

A landmark in Leiper’s Fork, Green’s Grocery will host our Martin Center holiday party. This is a unique and exclusive opportunity to travel to the beautiful countryside of Leiper’s Fork and enjoy fellowship and friendship. We will travel in comfort by Grey Line motor coach and sip a little bubbly along the way. A catered dinner will be provided by Ambrosia Catering of Nashville. Special guest appearance a VERY strong possibility.

Cost: $50.00 includes transportation, gratuity, holiday dinner, and wine provided by Cool Springs Wine and Spirits.

Toyama House Japanese Steakhouse & Hibachi Grill Tuesday, December 10. Leave the Center at 10:45.

Let’s go Hibachi! Located off Old Hickory Boulevard in Nippers Corner is one of the best Japanese steakhouses in Nashville, so let’s go find out for ourselves. Enjoy your master chef’s wonderful performance at the Hibachi Grill, or order a traditional Japanese cuisine prepared with the freshest of ingredients. Franklin Theatre Christmas Story

Monday, December 16. Leave the Center at 10:15.

The film is set in Hohman, Indiana, a fictionalized version of Shepherd's hometown of Hammond, Indiana. Nine-year-old Ralph "Ralphie" Parker wants only one thing for Christmas: a Red Ryder BB Gun with a compass in the stock, and "this thing which tells time." While using various schemes to convince his parents to get him this gift, he continually bumps into objections from others saying, "You'll shoot your eye out." When Ralphie asks his mother for a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, she refuses. Join us to watch this Christmas classic at the beautiful Franklin Theatre. Van: $5.

Travel to Cool Springs for dinner at Carrabba’s. After dinner, tour Brentwood/Franklin neighborhoods for Christmas Lights Tour. As you gaze among the lights, enjoy sipping bubbly along the way.

Lunch and Movie in Cool Springs Saving Mr. Banks

Friday, December 20 at 10:45 When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who had absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stopped selling and money grew short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation. PG –13. Friday, December 13 at 2:00 Instructor: Barbara Bays Bring your favorite beverage, a relaxed attitude, and paint along with art instructor Barbara Bays. She will show you step-by-step how to paint a beautiful masterpiece that you will take home at the end of the day to hang or give as a gift. . Enjoy fellowship and fun. Cost: $10 includes supplies. Make Your Own Canvas Portrait!

Making Your Memories Into Art ~ Makes Great Gifts

Part 1: Monday, November 18 at 2:00 Instructor: Barbara Bays Bring a favorite photo whether it is your pet, family members, or friends. Sherry will scan your 8 1/2 by 11 photo and laser print a copy at the Center prior to the class. Barbara will demonstrate how you can transfer your photo onto canvas making your memory into art. You can expect an imperfect transfer. Using the imperfections are absolutely lovely!

It's best to choose an image to work with that is not incredibly detailed. Each transfer is different.

The more you experiment, the better!

Part 2: Tuesday, November 19 at 2:00 Put the finishing touches on your canvas to take home.

Cost: $15 includes paint brush, supplies and canvas. Reservations accepted with payment.

Watercolor Exploration with Barbara Bays 6-week series begins Tuesday, November 12 through Tuesday, December 17 at 1:00 It is a “no more fear approach” to watercolor. These sessions are for those who want to continue to explore the art of watercolor. Beginners welcome. Any questions please call Barbara Bays at 414-0458.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest with

Special Guest Judges Monday, December 2. Lunch at 11:30 Ugly Sweater (noun) an overly-gaudy garment that is often adorned with large appliqué or knitted cartoon-like figures and sometimes made of bad color combinations. Beading, bells, buttons, and sequins are often used to embellish the garment. There's no entrance fee, except perhaps embarrassment, and you don't even have to wear a holiday sweater.

It can be anything so long as it's ugly in your eyes. Keep in mind, someone’s tacky sweater could be someone else's treasure. Join us for a guaranteed fun-filled luncheon with guest judges to crown our winner. The Nashville State Occupational Therapy students will join us again this year to spice up the competition!

~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our very own Vic Davis has created a new volunteer opportunity. He is working with our Living At Home Care Manager, Jennifer Broadrick, to pay visits to some of her clients.

Thank you Vic for the great suggestion. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Every year United Way of Williamson County organizes a Day Of Caring. UWWC pairs a corporate partner with nonprofit agencies that receive UWWC funding. This year Nationwide Insurance was our partner.

They did a great job of power-washing the outside of the building and then following behind to clean windows. A special treat came from our member, Pat Temple. Her daughter-in-law was part of the Nationwide group so Pat baked cookies and brought bottles of water for the volunteers to enjoy. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks again to the Garden Committee for the manicured beauty of the grounds. Many, many hours have gone into working on the property. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks to those volunteers that have helped ramp up for the Martin Masters Art Show. The Art Committee is comprised of Dot Small, Betsy Copley, Debbie Muck, and Barbara Bays. Volunteers have also helped prepare mailing lists and hand-addressed invitations. Thank you to Marilyn Nevens, Shirley Breece, and Bakula Trivedi. ~~~~~~~~~~~ “Just Joan” is always at your disposal. She is ready to send a card of encouragement, sympathy, or concern to any member that needs to know the Martin Center is thinking about them.
