SKINNER’S FIELD & TRIAL

FOR WHEN PERFORMANCE MATTERS. As we head into summer, it’s a good time to review our dog’s diet. This is because for some dogs, the summer is a time for rest and recuperation before the next working season begins, so their energy demands will often drop. Yet for others, the summer season is time to stay active, by channelling their energy into new and exciting activities, such as scurry’s, working tests, running, hiking, or even raising a litter. Skinner’s in-house Nutritionist - Zoe Russell, BSc (Hons), ANutr

THE TRADITIONAL GUNDOG Throughout the season, dogs fitness, stamina, and endurance is being pushed as they work hard by their handlers side. But as the season draws to a close, many working dogs are treated to a wellearned rest. This means their energy demands often drop and as a result, don’t need as much nutritional input from their diet. At this stage, it’s important to regularly monitor their weight and condition and manage any changes. If they do begin to put on weight, their daily feed intake can be dropped by around 10-20%. However, if you need to feed significantly under the feeding guidelines to keep the weight off, then it may be beneficial “stepping down” to a diet such as Field & Trial Maintenance out of the working season. This diet has been traditionally used during the close season, as it’s less nutrient-dense than other diets so can be ideal for dogs at rest or undergoing light activity.

THE “ALL-ROUNDER” Traditionally, the working season would come to an end and dogs would have the summer to rest. At this time, a dog’s energy demands would usually drop and therefore their diet would need amending to minimise the likelihood of weight gain. However, this is not so common now, as many dogs turn their paw to other activities

during the summer to help keep their fitness up. Therefore if your dog continues to be active all year round, you may not necessarily need to change their food. Ideal diets for active dogs include Field & Trial Working 26, Working 30 and Duck & Rice. We would simply suggest keeping an eye on their weight and condition and adjusting their daily intake if you need to.

THE MUM-TO-BE For some dogs the summer months mean a different type of responsibility - raising a litter. Once the pregnancy is confirmed, a bitch can remain on her “normal” maintenance diet until around week 5 of her pregnancy. At this stage her energy demands will greatly increase, so we would suggest a slow and gradual transition onto a more nutrient-dense diet such as Field & Trial Puppy or Working 30. These diets provide a higher provision of key nutrients such as protein, fat carbohydrates and balanced levels of the minerals calcium and phosphorous.

NFU MUTUAL HEADLINE SPONSOR

A WARM WELCOME The GWCT Scottish Game Fair

My family and I are delighted to welcome you to Scone Palace for the 33rd GWCT Scottish Game Fair. The 2021 event was a triumph in the face of adversity, made even more enjoyable following the hiatus in 2020. The organisers have worked tirelessly to ensure this year’s event, back in its usual July slot, will be the best yet, offering all your favourite displays and experiences alongside new attractions and timely debate highlighting the challenges facing the rural sector. Scotland is a nation where innovation and tradition, old and new, stand side-by-side. Hardy sheep with ancient bloodlines graze beneath stark, modern wind turbines generating renewable energy. Whisky distilleries, utilising the same simple ingredients for hundreds of years to create the iconic Scottish dram, are opening ultra-modern, eco-friendly visitor centres. The arrival of corporate landowners, keen to demonstrate their 21st century green credentials by snapping up ancient forests, presents yet further opportunity for increased dialogue and engagement around conservation, farming and gamekeeping. A visit to the GWCT’s Central Exhibit, located by the Main Ring, will find the team focusing on a ‘three-legged stool’ approach - the provision of habitat, feeding and predation control - to ensure optimum game and wildlife conservation. You can learn more from their advisory team about how these three core aims will underpin the future of sustainable game management, doubtless bringing innovation alongside tradition once more. I am particularly pleased that the GWCT is running ‘Listen to the Land’, a special event in celebration of VisitScotland’s Year of Stories. This campaign promotes a diverse range of authors, scientists and well-known speakers presenting stories of Scotland’s natural heritage past, present, and future. Over the three days of the game fair, the GWCT will be exploring themes covering art, adventure, food, farming, folklore, conservation, climate change and culture. A rich heritage of art and creativity is woven into the fabric of Scottish life, and I know the importance of storytelling in preserving the traditions of this land. I hope you enjoy The GWCT Scottish Game Fair and everything it has to offer; I don’t know of any other event which simultaneously celebrates, promotes and supports the Scottish countryside quite like it.

Introduce youngsters to fieldsports by entering the

JUNIOR MACNAB CHALLENGE BASC tent

The idea is simple – replicate the Macnab by replacing the stag with a rabbit target shot with an air rifle, the brace of grouse with clay pigeons and the salmon with fly casting accuracy. Each participant (aged 8-18) is issued with a game card and shoots clays with a BASC Shotgun Coach, shoots on the airgun range and casts with local angling club instructors. At the end of each day all of those who have successfully completed their game card are entered into a daily draw to win a number of prizes, including a Ridgeline Kids Monsoon smock, a 12-month sub to Fieldsports Journal and Fly Fishing and Fly Tying, fly fishing tackle, Walkers electronic ear defenders and a family pass to The GWCT Scottish Game Fair next year.

The modern Macnab involves bagging a salmon, stag and brace of grouse within one day between dawn and dusk, and was derived from Perthshire-born novelist John Buchan’s iconic 1925 book. Now, ambitious youngsters wanting to complete the iconic Scottish challenge can have-a-go at a mini version here at The GWCT Scottish Game Fair. The free-to-enter Junior Macnab Challenge was first introduced in 2018 and was an instant success, with more than 200 children signing up. The idea originated from Country Sports Scotland and is supported by the Scottish Youth and Countryside Education Trust, BASC and many others. THE GWCT SCOTTISH GAME FAIR

FALCONRY Falconry Mews & Main Ring Friday & Saturday shows: 11.05 & 15.05 Sunday shows: 11.55 & 15.40 Often only spotted through glimpses or fleeting moments, birds of prey can be incredibly tricky to see in the wild and near impossible to look at up close. Elite Falconry offers visitors the opportunity not only to see a variety of birds up close, but also marvel at how these creatures might behave in the wild through considered demonstrations.

FERRETS

Coming from their centre in Fife, Elite Falconry trains hawks, falcons, eagles, vultures and owls to fly while retaining their natural instincts and independent behaviour. During their two demonstrations in the Main Ring on all three days of the event, you’ll see different flying styles and learn how each species understands the ‘pecking order’ when it comes to scavenging and feeding. Visitors will also get clued up on the plight of the vultures which are in critical decline but are hugely important as scavengers who act as nature’s clean-up crew.

Activity Row Daily shows at 11.00 & 13.00 Simon Whitehead and his Pakefield ferrets will demonstrate the traditional craft of ferreting during 30-minute shows designed to both educate and entertain. In between displays, Simon will be on hand to talk about how he has made a living rabbiting and his lifelong passion for the countryside. Starting his own business in 2001, Simon has published three books on the subject of ferreting and has become the UK’s go-to ferreting demonstrator. Keen to educate more people about the full mechanics of ferreting to the wider world whilst enticing them into his world of ferrets, dogs and rabbits, Simon’s shows are constantly evolving, and now include his lurcher, taking the already popular demonstration to a new level. Through his static display, Simon also gives visitors the opportunity to hold a ferret or two while asking any questions they might have.

THE GWCT STAND CENTRAL EXHIBIT

G W C T A D V I S O RY S E RV I C E S

This year, the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust’s central ringside stand concentrates on the simple concept of the three-legged stool for sustainable gamebird management. Drawn from the Trust’s research into grey partridges during the Sussex study - now the longest-running monitoring project in the world measuring the impact of changes in farming on the fauna and flora of arable land - this approach comprises suitable habitat, food throughout the gamebird’s life cycle, and reasonable freedom from predation.

Come and chat to our professional advisors and researchers on stand about our wideranging services in the uplands, wetlands, lowlands, on farms and in woodlands. This work assists managers to create and sustain a thriving countryside, rich in game and wildlife. As part of these services, we now offer a tailored advice, training and reporting package to help estates demonstrate Best Practice. Using mobile app technology, we provide keepering and management teams with an easy-to-use method to collect and maintain bespoke records. This is aimed at helping estates fulfil basic due diligence and evidence requirements, which will be important for future licence applications and accreditation.

Just like the three legs of a stool, if any of these supports are missing, the whole arrangement can collapse. These key elements are therefore set out in engaging and informative displays that explain their importance in managing pheasants, partridges and grouse. T: 01738 551511

SELINA WILSON

R E A S ON S TO BE W ILD

Inspired by nature and form, and specialising in animals, landscapes and sculpture, Selina’s work is naturalistic, expressive, and diverse. She studied for three years at the prestigious Charles H Cecil Studios in Florence. A practising artist and tutor for fourteen years, she worked initially in London and is now based in the Scottish Borders, where she grew up.

Blending a unique mix of conservation insights, art and science, Reasons To Be Wild bring a fresh approach to illustrating and raising awareness of British wildlife through art and engagement. We are delighted to welcome Emily Crookshank back to our Artists in Action area. Emily’s love of the outdoors has allowed her to capture emotive and dramatic scenes first-hand on the pages of her sketchbook. She is rarely seen on a walk or exploring without said sketchbook, a stick of charcoal and a black smudge on her cheek. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across the country and she is highly regarded in the world of printmaking.

When painting the landscape, Selina works almost exclusively outdoors and throughout all the seasons. She prefers, if possible, to study animal subjects from life, capturing the likeness and character of her subjects. THE GWCT SCOTTISH GAME FAIR

LISTEN TO THE LAND Stories of our natural heritage, past, present, and future

By bringing together these voices we hope you will be inspired and entertained. There will be time for questions and discussions after most talks.

Marking VisitScotland’s Year of Stories, we have gathered an array of authors, scientists and well-known speakers from far and wide to tell us their stories and accounts, celebrating the countryside, reflecting on halcyon days from the past, and current work being done to protect the land for future generations. We will explore topics from art to adventure, food, farming and folklore, conservation, climate change and culture.

The Hive tent discussions will be hosted by three great personalities in the shape of Guy Grieve, Linda Mellor and Louise Gray. Guy is an adventurer and an entrepreneur whose fight for sustainability led him to start up a multi-award winning ethical fishing company on the Isle of Mull. He has written books about his experiences, presented TV programmes and has written a regular column for the Scottish Field. Linda has photographed and written about the countryside for over twenty years, both in print and online. In 2019, she published her first non-fiction paperback, For the Love of Country Sports. She has also worked for the BBC, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Country Life, The Spectator and Scottish Field. She is perhaps best known for her book, The Ethical Carnivore, in which she discusses the ethics of meat and her experience eating only animals she killed herself.

We are also equally pleased that Owen Williams is joining us in the marquee. A leading sporting artist, with work hanging in major collections throughout the UK and further afield, Owen will be telling us about his work and research with GWCT into Woodcock, which has led to coauthoring several scientific papers on the species. Owen frequently writes in the sporting press, and earlier this year was appointed Chairman of GWCT Wales and a GWCT Trustee. such as raptor surveys, which involve walking transects several km long and recording any birds of prey we see.”

Every year the GWCT hosts around 12 undergraduates from universities the length and breadth of the UK for placements. These placements help students gain real life work experience and support for our conservation and research projects, but also share our aims and message with a younger audience. We caught up with Tanith and Holly, who are based in Bo’ness and are nearing the end of their year-long placement with the GWCT.

What have been the best bits and the worst bits? Holly: “I think getting a leg stuck fast in the mud of a ploughed potato field is a low point for me, though my colleagues seemed to find pulling me out very amusing! We’ve also been intimidated by a territorial partridges during the playback surveys and had our vehicle charged by an overexcitable male pheasant. I can speak for us both when I say that our favourite part of the placement is the fieldwork. From breeding bird surveys to counting hares, the wildlife and countryside make the early starts (3:00am alarms are not uncommon) and late finishes worth it.”

Tell us a little about yourselves. Holly: “I’m 21 and from just outside Belfast and am studying Biological Sciences at Exeter University. Having spent my life in the suburbs, I wasn’t aware of the GWCT and its work until a lecturer emailed a list of their placements to us. They intrigued me, so I applied and here I am.”

What have you learnt that will stick with you?

Tanith: “I live in the Hampshire countryside and thanks to family interest in fieldsports, knew of the GWCT and recognised the organisation when I started looking for a placement. I’m 22 and am studying Zoology with Animal Behaviour at Bangor University”

Tanith: “I’m so proud of how much I’ve learnt about bird identification and bird calls. When we started our placement, I knew virtually nothing, but I now have skills for life”. Holly: “With my non-countryside background I wasn’t aware of the relationship between shooting and conservation, and I’m glad I can now share a balanced view with the world.”

Tell us what you’ve been working on during your placement? Tanith: “We split our time between office work at home and and being in the field. The main focus has been the North Sea InterregPARTRIDGE project, and that’s involved breeding bird surveys, playback surveys (when bird calls are played, and the responses recorded) and other monitoring work.”

What are you hoping to do next? Tanith: “We’re both heading back to complete our third-year studies at university. After that, we both plan to study for a Masters, then Holly is keen to work in ecological consulting, she’s really been bitten by the field work bug! I have developed a keen interest in birds but after a Masters, who knows? We will keep in touch as it’s been an amazing experience and we’ve grown very close over the year.”

Holly: “This project has been amazing as it also gave us the chance to travel to Europe to observe measures for farmland biodiversity there. We also complete work for other projects SCONE PALACE

REFLECTIONS ON THE YEAR The GWCT’s director for Scotland, Rory Kennedy, looks back on his first 12 months in the post

Photograph: Tony Bynum

For many, the coming of The GWCT Scottish Game Fair marks an annual opportunity for reuniting friendships and celebrating our traditional way of life. For those working behind the scenes it also marks the culmination of a year’s work, and the ending of this annual cycle provides a chance to reflect. For me, this marks my first full year in the hotseat, and it allows a proper perspective on the role. I have found a passion that sadly eluded me for the decades as I wrestled with the grey blandness of the corporate world. Despite years in the Big Four and as a partner in an accountancy practice, I now work longer hours than ever. There is no true escape from committees, budgets and emails however, now my daily office can often include some of the most beautiful places in the country. Some workdays, I get to experience amazing wildlife. However, every day I deal with fascinating, like-minded people. Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life!

support schemes, natural capital, the carbon economy, capercaillie, grouse moor licencing, muirburn, predator management…the list is endless and for a relatively small team we hugely punch above our weight. Meanwhile, in the last year we created a new role of Director of Scottish Research and Dr Louise de Raad has brought a laser-like focus to our research work and, through a collaborative approach across scientific and academic institutions, will dramatically increase our research output over the coming years.

A particular pleasure for me is the GWCT team. I work with passionate, interesting and frighteningly intelligent people who are there not as a ‘job’ but because they passionately believe in the mission. Our backgrounds are diverse. Some, like myself, are passionate field sports enthusiasts. Other are proudly vegan. What we share is an understanding that interventionalist wildlife management is the only credible way of saving our nation’s most threatened bird species.

Meanwhile we continue to show success at our Auchnerran demonstration farm. This farm has proven the ability to turn around an ailing hill farm, considerably increasing the productivity and density of livestock, while maintaining the existing high populations of red listed waders. This has allowed us to develop and refine techniques that have applications across all sustainable farming and agricultural policy. A huge credit goes to our mercurial farm

In the last year we have seen a huge amount of policy work thrust on us; agricultural THE GWCT SCOTTISH GAME FAIR

position on predation and capercaillie was correct and necessary to avoid extinction in as little as 20 years. Meanwhile, grouse moor licencing is an inevitability however, I believe our role will be to make it a workable legal framework that supports the grouse sector while adding accountability and transparency to an industry that is so vital to support our diminishing upland bird species. These are battles I feel we can, and are, winning.

manager, Allan Wright, and now Dr de Raad’s appointment will see this farm move to the next phase of its development; demonstrating and researching techniques for the low carbon, hi biodiversity, economically-viable hill edge farm of the future. Not a mission without obvious challenges! Finally, there is our advisory team, who work with shoots and farms to harness working land management as a tool for conservation. For many years this team was Hugo Straker, who is an extremely well ken’t face amongst the shooting community in Scotland. However, Hugo has also been a fantastic champion for developing succession and has nurtured the obvious talent of Dr Nick Hesford, a gamekeeper turned accomplished research scientist, and now Marlies Nicolai. Marlies has been one of our key research team on Auchnerran and last year stepped up to the plate to also manage our game shooting operations at the farm. Anyone who has experienced one of our shoot days will appreciate what an able and articulate host she is and will now be moving from research to support our advisory activities.

A bigger battle may well be within our own community. We are facing a biodiversity crisis. Many still disbelieve this, largely due to shifting baseline syndrome; incremental shifts in the accepted norms meaning you don’t realise what we have truly lost. Scientific data from the late 1960s onward shows many, once common, farmland bird species collapsing, some by as much as 95%. One prominent study showed our insect biomass in South West Scotland had decreased by two thirds. Even amongst our most iconic species, the Scottish wildcat is considered functionally extinct and our capercaillie may be gone within two decades. I am convinced that well-managed shooting land is, invariably, the most effective land use to address our nation’s biodiversity collapse. However, one of our biggest challenges is persuading the shooting community they have to do more without criticising what we already achieve. Field sports ultimately relies on a ’social licence’ and in a democracy we only do what we do with the permission of the majority; an urban majority tainted by the toxicity of those that use media to misrepresent us. I believe the route we need to follow is to pre-empt the national direction of travel and react by clearly demonstrating how shooting and farming can be powerful tools to address both the climate and biodiversity crisis. Be part of the solution or risk being seen as part of the problem. On behalf of the team at GWCT, challenge accepted!

Several other talented people have joined our team in the last year. I believe all will have a long future with the trust and one of my proudest moments was seeing our two lowground student placements on the stage at our Scottish Auction, charming and enthralling our guests in equal measure. This team’s obvious talents are necessary as we face many challenges. We spend much of our resources educating while trying to counter those that intentionally peddle misinformation. Increasingly I feel policy makers see us as the adult in the room and this was very much vindicated by NatureScot’s Scientific Advisory Committee ruling our SCONE PALACE

1 - 3 JULY 2022

WHAT HAS THE GWCT EVER DONE FOR SHOOTING? Former chairman of the GWCT, Ian Coghill, looks at the contribution the charity has made since it was founded in 1931 and explains why we all need to support its work

and often, portrays the community that GWCT works with, as the problem, rather than the solution.

Everyone interested in the countryside and it’s wildlife should go to church every Sunday, get down on their knees and thank God for the fact that GWCT exists. If you are interested in shooting you should go back, and do it again at evensong.

I have been asked often by shooters, why they should support the GWCT. This is akin to the scene in Life of Brian, where they ask, ‘What have the Romans ever done for us?’ But I never complained. When you are involved in something you love and believe in, you don’t notice that other people don’t notice. If I had to identify a failing it would be that GWCT is so busy doing essential, challenging things, that it sometimes can’t remember where it put its trumpet, let alone how to blow it.

GWCT is unique. That is because from its inception it has set out to work with the people who own, farm and manage the rural landscape, solving conservation problems, using peer reviewed science to provide practical solutions. It therefore differs from much of the research done by conservation organisations, which often seems designed to describe problems rather than solve them, GWCT SCOTTISH GAME FAIR

72

NFU MUTUAL HEADLINE SPONSOR

So, I have always been happy to tell people why GWCT is good thing for them. If you make a list of all GWCT’s achievements in species conservation and advancing ecology it is a long one and I can and have reeled off schedules of scientific and agronomic advances that are awe-inspiring, but I think it misses the point, the spirit of the thing.

Only the best is good enough for GWCT science. From the outset, GWCT research has been committed to the arduous process of peer review. This is an essential discipline, making the end product hugely more impactful, and it is a challenge that GWCT scientists meet with commendable consistency.

My first ever meeting was at Loddington. I was there because GWCT was doing research into hares and I might be able to help. I sat between the late Hugh Van Cutsem and David (the Partridge) Clarke, then headkeeper at Raby. I had attended a lot of meetings but never anything like this. There were scientists, farmers, landowners, and gamekeepers and one amazed local government officer. Everyone was determined to create the right research model, everyone pitched in, and the animation and commitment was at a level I had never seen. It was the best and most productive meeting I had ever attended.

Also important are the unsung heroes of every organisation. GWCT has been blessed with a wonderful succession of regional organisers, fundraisers, press and media staff, administrators and a host of others who have exemplified the ‘Let’s get on with it, no point complaining’ approach to every problem that typifies GWCT. But the people who make everything possible, are the members and supporters. There is no organisation on earth with better people than GWCT. They are the crème de la crème. They want to understand and want to put something back, and want what they love and know to be good, to continue for the greater good of the British countryside and its wildlife. They are the people who would not know how to ask. ‘What’s in it for me?’

Since then I have been to many GWCT meetings, and they never lost that feeling of being in the presence of the best people doing their best.

They started it, kept it growing and cherish its integrity and its courage. Without them the conservation industry would be free to make up whatever it liked without challenge. Without them predator control would already be history. Without them there would be less chance of a sustainable and practical route to species abundance. They can be proud of what they have made possible and of being, as far as shooting people are concerned, the best of the best.

That quality pervades the entire organisation. By the standards of the behemoths of the conservation world GWCT is tiny, this is sometimes a matter of regret, because the other players are so huge, but it also has advantages. It means GWCT has to focus and be efficient. You only have to look at the carpets in HQ to know that this is an organisation spending its money on what it says on the label, research. That research is of the highest quality and GWCT has been fortunate to attract and retain some of the best scientists in the field. SCONE PALACE

Finally, it would be remiss of me not to take this opportunity to mention the contribution 73

1 - 3 JULY 2022

I thank God that my chairmanship of this great organisation coincided with Teresa’s involvement.

of GWCT’s CEO, Teresa Dent, to the success of GWCT and conservation generally. In a long and busy life I have worked with many excellent people (and some who weren’t) but I can in truth say that I have only ever encountered one Teresa Dent. When Andrew Christie-Miller appointed her, it was a stroke of the purest genius. A non-shooting agriculturalist with a passion for the truth, an excellent administrator with the resilience of a stoat, and a diplomat of the highest order, Teresa has again and again been the difference between success and failure and THE GWCT SCOTTISH GAME FAIR

I would end with a simple message, something that GWCT has endlessly demonstrated, that properly conducted game shooting is a force for good in the British countryside. There are two reasons that GWCT has been able to demonstrate this fact. The first, is the hard work and generosity of many fine people. The second, is that it is true. 74

UPPING OUR GAME Scottish chef Nick Nairn has taken on the challenge of executing a new fine dining pop-up restaurant in a marquee for 150 covers each day of The GWCT Scottish Game Fair. who will oversee everything for me while I mingle with diners. With a team like that visitors are going to want to book a table on all three days.”

Now under new management, the dining options at the GWCT Scottish Game Fair are getting a long overdue face lift. Visitors to this year’s event will notice a big difference with a choice of on-site restaurants. Organisers have upped the ante significantly by bringing in former Michelin-starred Scottish chef Nick Nairn to oversee the menu and execution of a brand new 150-cover riverside restaurant.

In the spring, Sussex-based Cai spent the day with Nick in Scotland testing recipes. “We are on the same page when it comes to ingredients and methods,” explained Nick, adding: “I think Cai is very talented. It isn’t easy to cook for large-scale catering events on open fire and produce consistant results, but he can do it. Cooking game in this way takes it to the next level. I’m delighted to be working on this project with him. Visitors are in for a real treat.”

Sitting on the banks of the River Tay within the estate’s historic parkland, the fine dining indoor restaurant will showcase the best of Scotland’s larder with bespoke breakfast and lunch menus. A keen countryman, Nick was the ideal candidate for the job given his natural affinity with the event. “I only live an hour away so I have been attending for decades. It is such a social occasion, I love catching up with friends from all over the country and of course, buying yet more green clothing to add to my collection. I am well aware of the format and the opportunity to improve the main restaurant for visitors. We are pouring everything into this project to really elevate the foodie offering beyond anything that’s come before.”

Organisers hope Nick’s stardom will attract record numbers to the event this year. He was the youngest Scottish chef to win a Michelin star in 1991 and found fame on the BBC’s popular TV shows Ready Steady Cook and Great British Menu. However, more recently he has been setback by a series of natural disasters. His Twitter bio reads ‘Still here after flood, fire & pestilence’ after his cook school in Perthshire was flooded by a burst pipe, then his restaurant in Stirlingshire was destroyed by a kitchen fire and of course, covid has taken its toll. However, unstoppable Nick and his team are charging forward with repairs and new projects.

Sponsored by fourth-generation Scottish family butchers J.W. Galloway, the restaurant is serving dishes like roast haunch of roe deer and warm woodpigeon salad cooked over coals by chef Cai Ap Bryn of Game & Flames. “Gone are the faceless caterers. Instead we have collaborated with Cai who is a big name in BBQ. The way he cooks everything outside on big metal racks certainly adds some theatre and will stop passers-by in their tracks. The smell is incredible. He will be joined by my executive chef Stevie Crawford

SCONE PALACE

The GWCT Scottish Game Fair has never been particularly known for its onsite restaurant. With food being such an integral part of the event there is a massive opportunity. Now, with an innovative new management team and invincible Nick at the helm, there’s no reason why this year’s offering won’t become its central attraction.

VOLUNTEERS Volunteer Tent, Main Entrance

A merry band of over 100 volunteers will return for 2022 to ensure the smooth running of this year’s GWCT Scottish Game Fair. Wearing distinctive purple polo shirts and green bibs (kindly supplied by NFU Mutual, the headline sponsor for the event) volunteers are easily recognisable. Volunteers carry out numerous roles: anything from helping in the fishing, gundog and shooting areas, selling show guides, scanning entrance tickets, helping in the Food Hall or simply pointing visitors in the right direction. Lots of volunteers return each year as they thoroughly enjoy being a part of the vibrant GWCT Scottish Game Fair team, with many choosing to volunteer for all three days.

If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer and would like to be part of the team at the event next year, email Jenny at gamefairvolunteers@gmail.com or drop by the Volunteers’ Tent next to the Main Entrance and say hello! “I love volunteering at The GWCT Scottish Game Fair because I get to meet so many great people from all over Scotland! I’ve made some new friends and caught up with old friends, and petted plenty of dogs too! Working at the event doesn’t seem like work at all - I have the time of my life running around handing out flyers, or taking pictures for the media team, or searching for the “best dressed” at the fair! I’m very excited to come back again this year and experience it all again!” Rosie Meynell – volunteer

These diets provide a higher provision Volunteers Volunteers of key nutrients such as protein, fat carbohydrates Dog Crèche Dog Crèche and balanced levels of the minerals calcium and phosphorous.
