Last 24: Your Family Ice Breaker: Recap on last week (You may have to use your notes from last week) DON’T FORGET TO PRAY!!!! How many of you have heard the saying “blood is thicker than water”? o It’s been an expression people, especially parents, have used in describing how the bond between family members is, and should be, stronger than the bond between a friend, co‐ worker, acquaintance, etc. In short, your focus, time should be more on family than friends But let’s be honest, if we were to take a poll on whether our focus is more on family (blood) than friends (water), majority would have to say friends o In all honesty, we are slowly neglecting the importance of family more and more each day For whatever the reason: Some because… • Parents divorce • Mom/dad drug or alcoholic • Brother/sister isn’t as annoying • Friends don’t try to run your life like parents • (GIVE YOUR OWN REASONS WHY WE NEGLECT FAMILY) Whatever the case may be, family isn’t a high priority as it should be ??? WHAT ARE SOME REASONS YOUR FOCUS IS OR COULD BE MORE ON “WATER” THAN “BLOOD”??? • If God said to you, “You only have 24 hours left to live”, one thing I would focus on would be the relationship between me and my family • The truth is, we take for granted our mom(s), dad(s), brother(s), sister(s) o Have you ever noticed that our family always sees the worst of us and never the best We tend to treat our family worst than our friends • For instance: we’ll spend $100’s of dollars on Christmas gifts for a boyfriend or girlfriend or bff but for mom and dad, it’s a homemade gift…cuz you don’t want to spend a lot of many on them • As of right now, the way we value the relationships between siblings and between parents are contradictory to what God desires • In Malachi 4:6, God expresses His desire for a deeper bond between families o God says, “…he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers…” • Through John the Baptist, God was going to restore the focus, bond, and importance of his people • Tonight I want us to rediscover the importance of the family o 1) Siblings o 2) Parents ???WHY DO YOU THINK FAMILY IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR LIVES??? • Let’s talk about siblings first o Majority of us typically don’t have an issue with our siblings As a matter of fact, those that have a brother or sister, a lot of the time are each other’s best friend • Which is a good thing o But some of us, can’t stand our brother or sister We love them, but rather not be with them We can’t stand how they are lazy, or how they talk to our parents, or are always negative, etc. • Or maybe they did something to you that brought you pain…deep hurt and you continue to hold that grudge ???HAS ANYONE EVER BEEN HURT BY WHAT A BROTHER OR SISTER MAY HAVE SAID OR DONE???
In Genesis 37, there is a story a boy who had probably endured more hatred from siblings than any of us here o His name was Joseph Joseph was betrayed by his brothers. His brothers were about to kill him! Instead they threw him in the pit He went through all kinds of hardships (read the story b4 Tues to give examples) Decades went by and Joseph’s brothers find themselves face down before the nd Pharaohs 2 in command • It was Joseph their brother They were hungry, needed food o Joseph could’ve killed them, thrown them into jail, but rather Joseph showed mercy to them ???HOW WOULD YOU REACT IF YOU WERE JOSEPH??? • If you are here tonight and you can’t stand your sibling because of something they did to you or said to you…. o Here’s some advice because listen, your brother and/or sister play an important part of the life God gave you o Paul writes this in 1 Corinthians 13:5… “Love…true love, keeps no records of wrong!” No matter how hard it is, love keeps no record of wrong…you need to focus on the relationship between brother and sister • Okay, now the rough subject..let’s talk about parents o I wanna read you this scripture found in Proverbs chapter 30:11 “There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother” o How many of you could agree that the writer of Proverbs could be talking about this generation We live in a time where we curse our parents more than praise them We have learned through movies, music, media, that honoring and obeying our parents is more of an option than a responsibility There are story’s of kids killing their parents, beating their parents o I’m sure most of us here has encountered this problem of not honoring your parent ???WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S HARD TO HONOR, OR RESPECT YOUR MOM AND OR DAD??? • If I only had 24 hours left to live, I would reassess my relationship with my parents • Now I understand that not all parents are the best influence for their children or that maybe some of you feel like you have been neglected by your parents o But this is what The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 6:2 o “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth” In other words Paul is saying, “That the mom, dad that you have…if you listen to them and provided it doesn’t contradict what God says, it’s gonna save you from a lot of hurt, upsets, etc. later on in life…will cause you to live a happier life o Because in essence the job of a parent is to protect, love and instruct ???HAS THERE EVER BEEN A TIME WHEN YOUR PARENT(S) TOLD YOU TO STAY AWAY FROM A PARTICULAR CROWD OR CERTAIN SITIUATION BECAUSE THEY KNEW IT WOULD HURT YOU, BUT YOU DISREGARDED WHAT THEY SAID ONLY TO FIND OUT THEY WERE RIGHT??? • Learning how to honor, respect, love your mom and or dad will result in a long life…a life that will be more fulfilling and refreshing o And guess what…honor, respect, love isn’t an option in God’s eyes…it’s a command As Christians, God expects this from ALL of us
