F

or many operators, a front linkage does little more than carry ballast, but for Pete Houseman, of North House Farm near Tadcaster, Yorkshire, the front linkage holds the key to greater operational efficiency.

This is because when he goes round baling, Mr Houseman puts a front-mounted Abimac twin rotor rake on the tractor’s nose, streamlining his operation.

He says: “Labour and diesel both have an impact on my business, so anything that helps me to work more efficiently, as a one-man operation, is worth a closer look.

“If you do the same as you have always done, you will continue to get the same as you have always had.”

He adds that up until last year a neighbour had been providing the raking operation, working ahead of Mr Houseman.

“The frontmounted rake is a clever idea that makes my life easier,” says Pete Houseman.

A front-mounted rake has improved operational efficiency for one Yorkshire grower, who now rows-up and bales silage as a one-pass operation. Geoff Ashcroft reports.

Up-front raking cuts down on passes “The short, catchy weather windows just seemed to compromise how our silage is made and so I looked at a cost-effective means of taking more control of silage quality,” he says.

Having invested in a plain mower,

the missing link was the rake. But opting for a traditional twin rotor model for the rear linkage would have meant doing each job separately.

“I thought it would be a great idea to combine jobs, by raking and baling simultaneously,” he says.

“So I organised a demonstration with Abimac UK and I was so impressed that the rake never left the farm.”

Family farm The 73-hectare family farm is predominantly grass, with a small area of cereals in the rotation, providing grain and straw for the Housemans’ 80-cow suckler herd. Each season, the farm produces a few thousand bales comprising mostly silage and hay.

“Using a front-mounted rake saves a pass, and that saves me time in the field,” he says. “And if the weather suddenly changes, swaths will not get wet.”

He says the most obvious downside of the unit is its length. The rake adds another three metres to the nose of his Fendt 724 tractor, though it is equipped with two sideways facing, wireless cameras to help with pulling out of field gateways and road junctions.

“It does not take long to get used to the length and also when manoeuvring around the yard,” he adds.

I can use the top link and go for a complete lift if needed.”

In-field though, he says the outfit really comes into its own, once the challenge of headlands has been overcome.

“You just have to think about straight lines, so it is handy having auto-steering guidance on my tractor rather than follow a field curve,” he adds.

“I do not have to concentrate on steering, so there is time to watch what is going on and make fine adjustments if necessary.

“Though, I am still working out the best way to tackle headlands.

The first run is the trickiest and this season I am going to try with the inner rotor lifted, so I can pull the outer swath into the field, to create more space in corners.”

Headland corner When entering a headland corner, Mr Houseman lifts the baler pickup and steers the rake to create the swath. This usually results in the baler cutting the corner, but with the pickup raised, this does not present a problem.

“Corner swaths are easily collected afterwards, when you turn out of the first few field runs,” he says.

“I just keep the rotors in the air and bale those few bits as I loop around.”

With an average field size of about 14ha, he says the unit is easy to manage on long, straight runs.

“As I stop the baler to apply net, I also lift the two rotors to prevent it making a ball under the tractor,” he says.

“Then I lower the rake and carry on baling.”

He adds forward speeds are typically 10-14kph, depending on the crop.

with the baler, because I have a rake in front of me,” he says.

“With grass spread out behind the mower, or tedded, I do make the swaths to suit the baler, so the raking width is tweaked according to crop density. This also avoids weaving down the rows to fill the baler’s pickup.

“It is also easy enough to manually adjust the raking width, as bolts are used to secure the telescopic sections,” he adds.

“It is a 10-minute job.”

Mr Houseman says the widest settings could be used in straw.

“As it is currently set, I can comfortably pull together two 17-foot straw swaths and I am sure it would just about collect two 20ft swaths,” he adds.

In very small fields though, he prefers to rake and bale separately, simply to overcome the physical limitations of manoeuvrability of such a combination in a small field.

“I now have the ability to choose which method is best suited to a particular field or crop type,” he says.

return to run the single hydraulic motor which then powers the rotors through conventional pto shafts.

Raking height is manually adjusted, though rotor lift is achieved on a single-acting spool which simultaneously lifts both rotors – lowering them is a job for gravity. However, a locking tap allows the oil feed to one lift ram to be isolated, creating single rotor lift.

Rotor speed Mr Houseman has found that rotor speed can be easily tweaked through the Fendt Vario terminal, which means the unit is not bound by a fixed pto speed which is required for the baler.

“That is one of the attractions of this system – total flexibility,” he says.

“And matching the speed of the rake to my forward speed means I can create a decent sized, lump-free

swath. If the rotors are running too fast, they will also create more debris on drier days, which could cause premature blocking of the tractor’s front grilles.

“So far, cooling has not been an issue, because I clean the radiators after every day’s baling,” says Mr Houseman.

“Combining raking and baling is proving to be a really efficient process for me.”

Having recently invested in a Krone Comprima baler, bought to replace a 40,000-bale JD592 model, he says the ultimate rake, bale and wrap combination currently remains a dream, but adding more frontmounted kit is on his agenda.

“I still have to go back into every field to wrap the bales, but I have cut one pass out with this system,” he adds.

“I would also like to add a front-mounted mower to increase mowing output and efficiency.”

He says choosing a front-mounted rake lets him make the most of weather conditions in pursuit of higher quality forage, while

working with the limitations of a limited labour supply.

“It is a clever idea that makes my life easier,” he adds.

With a 4.3-metre Ulrich folding fork, the L70H puts 18-tonne trailer loads away in one pass.

I

ndustrial-type wheeled loaders have struggled to make the move from quarry to clamp, but there is a gradual increase in acceptance for Volvo’s L Series wheeled loaders.

The Swedish maker continues to find favour among agricultural contractors and with models gently tweaked to include ag-spec tyres, quick-hitch and torque lock, the L Series is becoming well-suited to the productivity of a high-powered self-propelled forager.

Wiltshire contractor Ollie Kinch, based near Chippenham, bought an L70H mid-way through the 2018 grass season and has never looked back.

“In my opinion, construction kit is far better built,” says Mr Kinch.

“You only have to look at centre pivot joints and pins, loader arms and headstock; it is impressive.

“We do work kit hard, but it is no different to what it will do in a quarry

“When I have finished with a machine, I would like to think there is still a useful second life in it, along with a strong residual value,” he adds.

way through 2,000 hectares of grass, wholecrop and maize silage each season, with a Claas Jaguar 970 sending large volumes of forage back to the clamp at an alarming rate. The L70H’s primary role is to clamp and roll, but without feeling the pressure.

And that pressure is on Mr Kinch’s shoulders, as he chooses to spend the silage season sat in the L70H. “The cab is a great place to sit – it is comfy and spacious. The front windscreen extends down almost to the cab floor; the deep rear windscreen gives a great view to the corners of the counterweight; it is a viewpoint that you will not get from anything else, and it makes it easy to see behind when reversing down off a clamp.”

He says 18-tonne trailer loads are put away in one pass, with the help of a 14ft Ulrich folding fork.

“The way the Volvo puts down its power is impressive,” he adds. “There is no fuss, no drama, no wheelspin - it just grips and goes, and those Michelin tyres also work well in-field.

“If you want to tear up and down a clamp at a rate of knots, buy a JCB,” he says.

“If you want to work smoothly, with less fuss, while pushing much more grass, you need a Volvo. It

makes full use of everything it has got.”

His experience is based upon two years and 2,000 hours running the L70H, following a succession of 416, 418 and 434 models, which he describes as very capable machines.

“We do run JCB Loadalls and they are ideal for materials handling tasks,” he says.

“But when a lorry load of fertiliser would turn up in the yard, and I had the choice of jumping on a 434 or the Loadall, I would take the Loadall everytime. Now I will take the Volvo as my first choice – and it will also lift so much more.”

He says the machine’s 14t operating weight gives a sure-footed and stable feel, making it an impressive all-rounder for the Wiltshire contractor.

“There is no awkward movements that make you think we are going too far,” he says. “Loading bulk lorry trailers with woodchip, lifting big bags or pallets off flat beds, rehandling big square bales, muck loading or clamp work, it takes it all in its stride.

“We have got a high-cube toe-tip bucket, Heath super grab, silage fork, pallet forks and general-purpose bucket. It does not matter which attachment you are using, the L70 is just so communicative and extremely comfortable with it.”

“It is maximum productivity with minimum fuss,” says Mr Rogers.

“And after a long day in the cab, I do not get out feeling like I have done 10 rounds with a boxer.”

Specification The L70H’s specification is not found wanting. The Kinch machine includes a heated and cooled seat, electrically heated and adjustable mirrors, auto-greasing system, Eco throttle pedal for everything other than clamp work, climate control, front axle diff-lock, LED work lights and an auto-reversing fan.

and regulating temperatures, that I have only had to clean the radiator once in two years,” says Mr Kinch.

“The cooling pack stays clean, even with really dry grass.”

Mr Kinch says he did consider the larger L90H model, but saw no benefit for going bigger. And trying other similar loaders confirmed his preference for the Swedish machine.

“The L70H is the perfect size for us. It suits a lot of the traditional buildings that we get into, and there was little difference in price with other similar machines,” he says.

“I still have our 10ft Albutt front push-off fork, but we only use it on larger clamps where we can safely run our Fendt 936 alongside the L70.

But the Fendt really is for consolidation with a Silapacter.”

He says that service and back-up is impressive, with direct access to two

local mobile technicians from Volvo importer SMT GB. “We have had kit serviced before 7am so we can go off and work for the day, and when we first had the loader, SMT came and rode in the forager, to get a better understanding of what we did,” he says. “I like the way that SMT thinks and operates for its customers.”

He says the L70 is equipped with Volvo CareTrack telematics, which he says is a superb management tool that helps with operating efficiency and also preventative maintenance.

“I have no complaints with the way we are supported,” he says. “The L70 is on a gold R and M package too, which gives me fixed costs per operating hour. Other than the fuel tank capacity - which needs topping up on very long days – the L70 has not been a disappointment to us, and I would definitely have another.”

Improvements to silage quality from using additives are widely acknowledged, however app addition to harvest machinery rather than being built in. Jane Carley gets advice on the bes

Tips for best additive applicator placement

S

ilage additives help to preserve the ensiled forage crop, maintaining its nutritional quality and can assist in reducing spoilage by improving aerobic stability.

Depending on the type of forage and its moisture levels, either chemical or lactic acid bacteria inoculants can be applied through the harvesting equipment, be it chopper, wagon or baler.

However, as the range of equipment on the market varies so widely there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution.

Of the silage additive used in the UK, 95 per cent is wet applied, with the acid or bacteria content supplied as a concentrate and diluted for use.

Another approach is ultra-low volume (ULV) application, which at 20ml/t requires just a 20-litre tank to cover 1,000t of silage, compared to the 1,000-litre required at one litre/t.

This ULV tank can also be built-in,

ON a self-propelled forage harvester, additive can be carried either in an in-built tank or in 200-litre barrels mounted at the rear of the machine.

It is then transferred via a diaphragm or stem pump and applied to the silage via the bottom inspection hatch on the chute at a rate of one to two litres/tonne.

Volac silage specialist Peter Smith says: “The low volume tank will last most of the day, and even if a refill is needed, the support driver just needs to bring a two-litre bottle of product.

“ULV application either uses a nozzle either to vaporise it into the chute or places it in the accelerator to be vaporised when air is drawn into the harvester.”

Mr Smith says some farmers were initially sceptical of the efficiency of ULV application, but tests of 30 samples treated by the Actisysler showed that it is as accurate as traditional higher volume application.

“ULV systems are reliant on air speed and need a high volume of air – which can be up to 140mph on modern machines - to atomise the liquid, so may be less suitable for older foragers,” he points out.

Trailed foragers work well with a 200-litre barrel, with the product applied via a diaphragm pump on to the pick-up reel.

WHERE TO MOUNT TANKS ON BALERS WHEN mounting tanks, Andrew Snell of the Profitable Farming Company (PFC), which supplies branded Hayboss systems to OEMs including Agco and CNH Industrial as well as aftermarket solutions and the Baler’s Choice range of preservatives, cautions that they should be compliant with transport legislation.

“Putting a tank on the drawbar means it is overloaded; it should go on the top of the bale chamber itself. Bear in mind that a full tank could also put a round baler overweight on the road so think about transport solutions for water; there is more weight tolerance on a square baler.”

Strength and build quality for mounting systems is vital, he points out.

“CE-compliant welding is also a must and few farm workshops can offer this – we use a local shed-building company for welds.”

Mr Snell suggests a front tank can be useful where contractors are swapping between balers. Nozzles can be fitted to both balers and the manual control moves over.

“But think about quality again.

We fit plastic non-drip fitting for the pipework and side indicator lights on the tank frame,” he adds.

Deceleration

Depending on machine and additive/inoculant type, applicator placement can vary considerably.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR FORAGE WAGONS DRY application comes in for forage wagons, with the advantage that a 20kg bag of the dry product is relatively easy to carry in a tractor cab, says Mr Smith.

“An 80kg hopper can be mounted on the front of the wagon, and the powder is blown via a fan in front of the feed rotor,” he says.

“One downside is that the product may bond less well on dry crops, and in windy conditions can blow into the air or fall onto the ground.

“In addition, if the machine is left

overnight without cleaning, product can get wet and sticky.”

Liquid systems are increasingly common on wagons and tanks can be mounted on the front of the body as long as it is not a moving headboard type.

Liquid is piped down to spray on the pick-up reel, ideally via two or three nozzles.

“The higher the nozzles are positioned the better, as they can easily get knocked off,” Mr Smith says.

“Alternatively, if the knife chamber

can be accessed, fit them to spray in front of the knives.

“However, it is more difficult to check for blockages in this position – fitting a pressure gauge or flow meter for either position will quickly reveal any issues.”

Tank size is worth considering, he points out.

“You can choose 200 or 400-litre tanks,” he says. “Additive does not mix as well on a forage wagon as the crop is loosely chopped, so two litres/t is the recommended dose, favouring the larger tank.”

ROUND AND SQUARE BALERS ON a baler, the nozzles need to be in front of the knives so should be placed as high as possible, spraying down onto the pick-up reel and covering its whole width.

Mr Smith says: “Aim to apply three litres/tonne or two litres/bale, depending on its size.

“The Ecosyl Ecobale applicator works well at 250 litres, or you could use the 400-litre tank from a forage wagon.

“Some customers will carry the additive container on brackets on the tractor’s front linkage, but bear in mind this makes for a longer unit on and off the road and risks covering lights and indicators.”

Automatic applicators can make for more accurate use of the product and get the best out of modern high value balers, adds Mr Snell.

He says: “A simple manual system will give a set rate based on tonnes/

hour baled and can be an economical solution for hay preservatives.

“An automatic system links application to moisture levels, read by sensors on the pick-up, and applies a variable rate.

“On balers such as the Fendt Squadra, the system can also use its electronic weight/length measurement data.”

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR The flexibility to make multiple cuts and boost forage quality has pointed one Dumfries farmer towards the use of a forage wagon. Jane Carley finds out more.

Getting the most from multi-cut forage

A

drive to maximise milk from forage has led Dumfries and Galloway farmer Alan Ramsay of A.F. Ramsay to a rethink on forage harvesting and, ultimately, to the purchase of a Krone MX forage wagon.

Milking 250 cows and with 130 sucklers on 410 hectares of land close to the Irish Sea which benefits from the Gulfstream bringing mild air ashore, the farm’s Montebeliarde herd is grazed for six to eight months of the year. Cows are housed on a mainly forage diet and

dry off before calving starts on March 1, with turnout two or three weeks later and buffer silage continuing for several more weeks.

Mr Ramsay says: “We are milking for Omsco so the requirement is for reduced concentrates and 70 per cent forage, although we are way above that.”

Examined When Mr Ramsay, who runs the farm with his father, also Alan, returned from college in 2019 he examined the farm’s grazing system.

“The herd is low input and output;

about 6,000 litres yield, but to get more from them I wanted the silage to match the quality of grazing, which meant moving to a multi-cut system. We used a contractor’s self-propelled forager, but it is hard to justify it for a multi-cut crop, so a forage wagon was the way forward.”

He says the multi-cut system particularly suits grass with a high proportion of clover as it can be cut at exactly the right time to get the most leaf, boosting milk yield while using fewer concentrates.

“When using a forager a lot of the leaf can shatter and does not get to the clamp; it all goes into a wagon so you get more protein and the grass can be preserved more effectively.”

He already had the rest of the forage machinery needed - Krone mowers and a two-rotor rake - as the farm does its own round baling, plus a bit of contracting, so it was a matter of sourcing a wagon.

“We actually used a neighbour’s wagon in 2018. The hot temperatures meant the second cut failed, but we had to take the crop off and thought that a forage wagon was worth a try. I

had never seen one working before and when I saw the chop length was comparable to a forager, I started to think it could work for us. I was also surprised by how quick across the ground it was,” Mr Ramsay says.

To make the most of the flexibility offered, he decided that it would be better to purchase his own machine rather than rely on a contractor.

“The output is less than a self-propelled forager, but by having our own machine we can go when we want to, which is important in the

He chose a Krone MX as he has used the brand for 25 years, with a good record of reliability and good back-up from local dealer Shire Agri Hires.

“Sadly Shire changed their business focus during the pandemic, although we have another dealer nearby in Cam Engineering. You can get any part direct from Germany in 24 hours and my father is mechanically minded so we can look after the machines well on the farm. We also priced up another brand but there was no local dealer.”

With a range of sizes available from Krone, Mr Ramsay opted for the 33cu.m MX330.

over-complicated, making it easy enough to load, transport and unload the silage.”

The wagon’s 1.8m EasyFlow pick up and rotor are well matched, with the rotor being immediately behind the tines avoiding dead spots where forage can catch and cause blockages.

“The grass flows evenly allowing the chop system to work better; crop is spread across all 41 knives.

This is visible when the knife bank comes out and the wear is even across the knives.”

Equipped with the manufacturer’s SpeedSharp system, he reckons that sharpening is a five-minute job on return to the yard, with the knife bank swinging out easily at the press of a button on the side of the machine.

“The knives are sturdy, but if you do hit a stone, they are also easy to swap,” he says.

A combination of the body tilting and the moving chain and slat floor make for quick unloading at the clamp.

“It works well throughout the season and the pick-up is good to adjust for dryer grass, but a little moisture in the crop is best. Fields close to the farm are small so we only cover

about 3.3ha/hour there, but up to 3.75ha/hour is a good average.”

Mr Ramsay reckons they put 600-700 loads a year through the wagon.

Chop length is 20-40mm and Mr Ramsay says that half of it is as short as from a forager.

Crop quality Crop quality has also been pleasing, whereas metabolisable energy (ME) of the silage produced by the forager was about 10.2 per cent, ME levels in 2020 were 12 per cent and crude protein rose from 13 to 16-17 per cent.

Additive is applied at two litres/ tonne and this is one of the few drawbacks of forage wagons, he suggests.

“No-one seems to have designed a suitable on-board tank. We have to strap a separate tank onto brackets. I hope that will be addressed in the future.”

Clamp management has also been simplified without the need to marshal multiple trailers.

“You get one large load, but there is more time to compact it and make better silage as you can ensure it is right.”

the machine. He says: “There are no weak spots; it is a heavy machine but the 800 tyres spread the weight and at least I know it will last.”

He expects to move to a butterfly mower next year to help keep ahead of the forage wagon.

“The key to quality is cutting at the right time, and more mower capacity will help us make the most of the MX.” The contracting workload may

also increase as he intends to promote the service more this season; there is plenty of interest, especially as diesel costs rise.

“Although it is undoubtedly a slower job, diesel use is half that of a forager so it is much more economical. We like the fact that Krone continues to develop these machines and can only see further improvements to areas such as chop length in the future.”

or Rick and Will Venables of J. and J.A. Venables and Son, the saving on wrap alone is reason enough to justify their purchase of a Kuhn FBP3135 combibaler, which they have run for the past two seasons.

Few machine decisions split opinion like which brand of combibaler to go for, however, the brothers from the 33 hectare Holly Tree Farm near Macclesfield, reckon their new baler is mixing it with the best, boasting a range of features, previously not seen on the market prior to its launch in 2017.

Rick says: “We farm a total of 250 acres made up of our own land and rented. Initially we had a Kuhn FB2135 baler to service our own needs. However, we started a bit of contracting work and soon began to grow our customer base.

“They were happy with the weights in the bales, but being a stand-alone baler, another contractor had to come in with a wrapper to finish the job. Customers started asking if we could do the whole job, but we were reluctant to buy a wrapper.

Researching “At the end of the of the 2018 season, we started looking at our options, researching what was on the market, narrowing our list down to the McHale Fusion, Vicon FastBale and the Kuhn. We had Kuhn’s new combi-baler on demo from local dealers Malpas Tractors and were impressed with the speed it baled, the density of the bales and the wrapping process.”

The brothers explain the quality of the bale is paramount to their business, both for retaining customers and taking on new ones.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR as possible. The baler lets me know where it is short on grass and directs me to the side of the row to fill up the left or right, giving a more even bale.

“Weight-wise, we get just over a tonne in most silage crops into the four-foot bale, 650-850kg in haylage and 300-400kg in hay. The amount of material it packs into the bales is impressive and helps the bales to retain their shape when stacked.

We have never seen any bales slump after stacking.”

The usability of the baler scores highly according to Rick, with

automatic features incorporated into the baler’s computer.

He says: “The baler is equipped with the 14-knife Opticut system. We bale with knives engaged for half the jobs we do.

“One feature I really like is when the bale gets to 90 per cent of its final diameter, the knives disengage from the rotor which allows a full rotation of unchopped grass to be put around the outside. This really helps to bind the bale together and when you take the wrap off, the bales do not fall apart, like they would if it was all chopped.”

While Rick spends most of the time operating the baler, Will is responsible for rowing up ahead of it. A lot of their work, being in the heart of Cheshire, is dairy based and frequently in paddocks surplus to farm’s grazing platforms.

Will says: “A lot of the paddocks we do are small and can be rough from hoof prints. You just have to watch the pickup to see how smoothly it travels and hoovers up the grass.

“It rarely blocks as the distance from the pickup to the rotor is so

short; there is always a constant flow of crop forcing its way in.”

However, the pickup is one area Rick would like to see a change made.

“The pickup wheels can be moved up and down to adjust the height, but they do not swivel,” says Rick.

Castors “While we have not seen any problems with them being fixed in direction, I would prefer to see swivelling castors used for piece of mind when baling headlands.”

When the demo baler came, Rick says it was running alongside a McHale Fusion.

“The fusion was slightly faster up the rows, however, the Kuhn was putting one bale per row out less, indicating to me the bales it was producing would be heavier. They were also more consistent in size and shape, which made up our minds.”

The wrapping system and the way it uses wrap is one of the baler’s biggest strengths, reckons Rick. The baler is equipped with film-on-film technology that applies film instead of traditional net wrap. And where it

differs form other film-on-film balers on the market is that it uses standard 750mm rolls of wrap, rather than special full-width rolls, making it easier and more convenient, he says.

“The wrap used to bind the bale is the same as it is on the wrapper. Two rolls are used, pre-stretched before binding, resulting in a slight overlap in the middle.

“We put three layers of wrap on the cylinder of the bale in the chamber, which is enough to hold it together.

I also think the bales store better because of this, as the air is squeezed out of the bale in the chamber, and the film put on in the wrapping process sticks to the film from the binding process much better than it does to net wrap.

“We get about 130-140 bales out of a pair of rolls for the binding process,” says Rick.

“We then give five layers of wrap from the wrapper, so the cylinder effectively has eight layers on. The wrapper saves us film as it is Kuhn’s 3D system. Its starting position is the same as a normal table wrapper, putting a revolution’s worth of wrap on

the flat side of the bale. Then, the rolls and dispensers rotate 90-degree, so they are presented to the bale horizontally rather than vertically.

The bale rotates on the table and the wrapping arms slowly rotate, covering the cylinder. The rolls then revert to vertical position and finish the flat sides of the bales.”

The system is very effective agree the brothers, with about 48 bales wrapped per pair of rolls. Will says: “The wrap is where it is needed, on the round part of the bale, which is where it is most vulnerable.

“In instances of pinholing, the ingress of air is minimal, little mould forms in the bale.”

Protective Switching over to net wrapping is a simple procedure for straw baling says Rick, however, he adds that they have tried using film as a protective layer for straw stored outside.

Rick says: “When baling straw in the heat of the summer, the film binding is not ideal as the wrap

becomes too thin, however, we tend not to bale much straw and can arrange to bale at night when it is cooler if needed.”

Rick reports the baler has so far been very reliable with no major issues. Bale ejection from the chamber to the wrapping table is good he says. With two kicker arms transferring the bales, even if a bale is not bound properly, it is propelled onto the table with little fuss.

He adds that the controls at the rear of the bale also make it easy if a miss bind does occur, able to sort it out with full visibility of the chamber. The only addition he would like to see on his baler are more work lights, both on the wrapper and under the panels, to make maintenance easier at night.

Rick says his best day piloting the baler saw 600 bales made, contributing to its workload of 7,000 bales per season. He anticipates the baler will be on-farm for the foreseeable future and hopes to grow his customer book off the back of it.

FR crop flow impresses Somerset contractor

F

or Somerset contracting family Butt Brothers, crop flow in combination with plenty of power, holds the key to forager output.

Alan Butt, who runs the business with his brother Keith and their sons Andy, Jake, Josh and Isaac, says: “It is all about crop intake, feed angles and flow.

“It is no good having a big engine that cannot move crop through the inner workings of the forager. We should know, we have had a few of them over the years.”

Since starting the contracting business in 1976 from Barrow Water Farm, Charlton Musgrove near Wincanton, the firm has enjoyed a

succession of self-propelled machines, favouring John Deere models for many years. And with every change of machine, active demonstrations saw them try every brand on the market to ensure it chose the best machine for the job.

The FR920 is not the outfit’s first New Holland. When it arrived for the 2019 season, it replaced an FR850.

Andy, who drives the flagship forager, says: “The FR920 addressed all the short comings we had with the FR850 and its predecessor.

“This latest version is a different animal to anything else we have had.

In fact, it is the best model we have ever run.”

Used with a three-metre grass pickup,

6.2m Marangon folding wholecrop header and a 12-row Kemper header for maize, the FR920 sees its way much through several thousand acres of foraging each season.

Smooth Andy says: “It is comfortably 10-20 per cent better than the previous model. Crop flow is smooth, and the forager simply does not struggle to push material through the drum and into the trailers.”

The FR920 Forage Cruiser is the flagship of New Holland’s latest range and is powered by a V8 FPT engine, developed with power and torque curves created to quickly deal with constantly changing crop loads.

This 20.1-litre, twin turbo motor develops 911hp, served up across a constant speed band from 1,8002,000rpm. A hefty slug of torque arrives to reinforce that headline

power, with a peak of 4,095Nm delivered at 1,500rpm – it is a 44 per cent rise from the FR920’s 2,100rpm maximum revs.

In addition, a reconfiguration of machine components has enabled the forager to exploit the engine’s potential. Crop intake is 12.5 per cent larger than its predecessor, feed rollers have been upgraded with more steel and an aggressive toothed profile and there is an extra gear in the intake gearbox that lets more power come through to the rollers.

In all, New Holland says this results in a more consistent layer of forage presented to the drum.

An 884mm-wide, chevron-patterned chopping cylinder takes care of business, and the firm’s Variflow system makes it easy to swap between grass and maize configurations by bringing the crop accelerator closer to the drum when the crop processor is removed.

The Butts reckon it is a 20-minute task to remove the crop processor, and a two-hour job to swap a set of blades.

Optional Dual Drive adds a separate hydraulic motor to the feed rollers offering greater fine-tuning of speeds, allowing the header and feed roll speeds to be controlled independently of each other.

For Andy, this level of controllability means sticky grass no longer has an opportunity to wrap around the feed rollers. He says: “The amount of adjustment I now have at my fingertips is enormous.

“We get such a variation in grass – from volume, crop quality, moisture and even grass varieties – I now have the ability to fine-tune the forager wherever I go.

“It is rare that I will leave the settings untouched for two consecutive fields,” he adds.

“And the result is that throughput is effortless.

“The FR920 is no longer a machine that you could just put a driver on and lean on the stick.

“If you want to make the most of the forager’s potential, you do need an understanding of what is going on, what you are picking up, and what you want to achieve. And of course, you still need a good team around you, to keep trailers and clamps operating efficiently.”

This philosophy also translates into mowing and raking, to set the crop up for harvesting. The firm is in the process of gearing up its

mowing capacity, by adding a Kuhn triple mower-conditioner, and keeping its two John Deere front/ rear 6m mower-conditioner combinations as back-up machines.

Depending on the season, swaths may be tedded to assist with drying, before a 15m Kuhn four-rotor rake pulls five rows into one.

Andy says: “Timing is everything when you are looking to make the best quality forage, and you cannot take advantage of conditions with small kit.

“Many fields are simply not smooth, and with this level of performance, I want to keep my forward speed to around 10-15kph.

Blades “Chain harrowing and rolling are low on the list of dairy farm priorities, so it is inevitable that we will consume three sets of blades and three shear bars each season. Regular sharpening is essential.”

While Andy’s fettling of machine settings translates into optimum output and performance for Butt Brothers Agricultural Contracting, the forager’s 1,200-litre fuel tank is considered meagre.

Andy adds: “Long days are commonplace, and the challenge of filling from a pump is just too slow, so we have fitted an extra tank to the rear of the forager.

“The weight is handy on some of the steeper fields, but with a mechanical four-wheel drive system –

rather than an assisted axle – it will go places where tractors and trailers sometimes cannot get. I have a diff-lock too, which can be handy in maize.”

Making life easy in the cab is a foot-operated switch that Andy has fitted to take the place of the joystick’s shift key function, making it easy to toggle between spout raise/ lower and chute flap adjustment.

“There are times when opening up maize fields, that you just need less to do with your thumb,” he says.

Overall, Andy and the team are pleased with the FR920, but admits that there is still room for improvement.

“Cab noise levels are pleasant enough, and comfort is okay, though I would like a larger cab,” says Andy.

“And some of the automated features that have found their way onto this model are counter-productive.”

He says the worst is its automated throttle reduction when the header is raised.

“It is a frustration, so you learn to keep the header low to prevent auto-activation,” he adds.

“I would like to see this function deleted – or made switchable, so I have the choice of when it happens.

It is currently the one adjustment I cannot make.”
