_xààxÜ yÜÉÅ exz|ÉÇtÄ W|ÜxvàÉÜ Losing bids, not clients… Recently, while vacationing I learned that I lost a bid of an event to another fashion show coordinator. While losing bids is never fun, I have accepted that it is a part of business. As the old adage says, “You can’t win ‘em all”. Well, I don’t know about you, but I detest the phrase. I think that I am capable, hard-working, and dedicated enough to be able to “win ‘em all”, so I seem to take it personal when I don’t. It’s probably not only about not getting to work with that particular client, but also about the “losing” aspect. I HATE losing. I tend to be a black and white person… there is right/ wrong, good/ bad, winning/ losing, etc. But despite this poor-losing spirit that I seem to have, losing this particular bid was more painful than usual. As I mentioned, I bid many fashion shows throughout the year. I win some, I lose some. I always reassure the potential client when they call to “let me down gently” that they are making the best decision for their organization and that I hope to work with them in the future. The punch to the gut reaction that I want to share with them is never known to these letter-downers making what I’m sure is a dreaded phone call. I cheerfully take it like a champ and leave them wanting more of my cheerful attitude. Well, its been almost 6 weeks since learning I lost a bid to a client I was sure I would be working with next spring. I still am having a hard time swallowing that jagged-pill because of how another coordinator (that did get the show) acted…. I think most would consider it unethical to copy-cat what another coordinator plans and call it your own, but not this individual! I decided to take the high-road, wishing that potential client the very best in their endeavors with their coordinator rather than bashing this Person’s ethics like I wanted. You know… What goes around, comes around and I’m sure my positive attitude is what will stick with this client. Hopefully I will be working with them soon. I think each of us has been in difficult situations where we have had to swallow our pride and stuff our real-feelings. You are all to be commended! This takes a lot of effort, but know that in the long-run you are doing EXACTLY what you should in order lose only a bid, rather than a client. Cheers,

_xààxÜ yÜÉÅ Xw|àÉÜ Hello FGI San Diego! Let’s just start by saying that June was an interesting month. Things happened that are making me think about the good things in life and the good people in life. I want to dedicate this issue to all of the amazing FGI San Diego members that I have had the privilege and pleasure of working with since I joined this prestigious organization a few years ago. I’ve asked a small portion of our membership to contribute to this issue and hope to get the rest of the membership featured in issues through the end of the year (when I get to officially retire from the newsletter, passing it on to the uber-fabulous Jeanie Haddox and take the reins as Regional Director giving our beloved Julie Fought a MUCH deserved break). So, think about those things in life that are important to you and do them. Think about those people in your life that are important to you and do something to show you appreciate them. Because you never know when it all might end. And with that...here’s to an AMAZING July! Full of warm summer weather, cool ocean breezes and to-die-for maxi-dresses! Have a fashionabulous month!!! Until next time…
