_xààxÜ yÜÉÅ exz|ÉÇtÄ W|ÜxvàÉÜ “New Year, New You" Whether you are vowing to eat healthier, walk the dog more, shop less, grow your business, or even lose a few pounds, everyone is focusing on the New Year, New You. That’s why we choose this inspirational trend as the theme for our Annual Meeting on January 8th at Feel Beautiful Boutique. My personal new year’s resolution is to expand my fashion consulting business (runway and displays) into LA. After tackling the San Diego market, I’m ready for the more challenging Los Angeles market. My plan to accomplish that goal: Visit more FGI events and network as much as possible. I’m not sure everyone understands the powerful networking that Fashion Group offers. Each year we have new members join, ignore the tools available to them, then not understand why they should renew year-after-year. Let my story be an example of how FGI really can change your career… If applied correctly. When I was a junior in College, studying Fashion and Business, my school advisor suggested I join the professional organization she belonged to. I joined FGI as a student member and immediately found a variety of fashion shows to volunteer at. I met a future employer (also an FGI Member) where I ended up working for 6 years. Not more than 6 months after deciding to develop my own children’s clothing line and pursue my own fashion consulting business, I was given a referral by yet another Fashion Group member. She thought I might want to reach out to a Westfield employee she had recently met to see if the mall-rep needed a fashion consultant for shows & events. After pursuing that mall-rep for a bit, a meeting was in place and to my disbelief she offered me a job on the spot. Sounds great, but here’s the catch: It wasn’t the fashion show field I wanted. Visual Merchandising was something I went to school for, and have a degree in, but my heart has always been set on events. After much consideration, thankfully I finally accepted the contracting position and have never looked back. Not only do I now have a fantastic career as a Visual Merchandiser, marketing to large organizations such as Westfield, but also a have grown that business to include (my fav) fashion shows and events! More importantly, I have gained a great friend. Jeanie, our current Secretary, who is valuable not only to me, but to FGI San Diego’s membership. This Fashion Group MVP has helped countless members to network and connect in ways only she can! In closing, I want to highlight two things. Because of FGI I have been able to grow and develop a fantastic career in San Diego and in this New Year; I’m vowing to grow my business even more by utilizing the FGI networking tools available to me in surrounding areas. I hope others will grab the opportunity and do the same! Lastly, I want to highlight an amazing friend, networker, and FGI member, Jeanie. Our 2012 FGI MVP. Cheers,

_xààxÜ yÜÉÅ Xw|àÉÜ Many people say that the holidays is their most favorite time of the year. Not so for me. I love January! The new year, the chance to start fresh on 1/1 of every year. And New Year’s Resolutions. Most people abhor them, personally I adore them! It’s my time to make goals for myself, both personally and professionally. I am proud to say that every single resolution that I have ever made has come true. Part of that is being realistic (I’ll never be a 5’9” supermodel, so I don’t make that a resolution). :-) I also don’t make my goals super specific: most people would put down that they want to loose 20 pounds, instead, I put down that I want to be healthier. The other part is my process of making my resolutions come to fruition. And it’s amazing how simple it really is. I take a notebook and at the top of each page I write down a resolution/goal. However many I have is up to me. Some years I’ve had only 4 and other years I’ve had as many as 15. Then on each of those pages, I make a checklist of things that I can do to help me get closer to my goals. It can be as simple as “do a google search to get ideas to accomplish goal x”. Then I have a list of things that I can do throughout the year to help me towards my goal. And the nice thing is that since I didn’t make my resolution super-specific, as long as I complete one thing on my checklist, then I succeeded in that resolution! I did one thing to get me closer to my goal! Keeping the attitude positive encourages even more success! In this issue, we had people share their New Year’s Resolutions and Goals with us, page 5 has them listed. Being fellow FGI members, perhaps when you read through them, you might find someone who has a similar goal as you and maybe, just maybe, you can make some connections like our RD, Julie, did to make all of your resolutions be a success! Have a fashionabulous month!!! Until next time…

[ÉÄ|wtç ctÜàç exvt On December 19th, all who was fashionable attended the FGI San Diego Holiday Party at the gorgeous Casa de Tortuga in Rancho Santa Fe (is there a better place to celebrate the holidays? I think not!) :-) Chef Drew McPartlin was there of course making his “to-die-for” hors d’oeuvres. Spanx were definitely needed after that night! Especially if you consider that the scrumptious desserts were from Cupcakes Squared. Guests ate, drank and were merry while they mingled with each other, catching up while celebrating the holiday season. And of course, it wouldn’t be an FGI San Diego Holiday Party without our White Elephant Gift Exchange. The gifts are always fun, exciting, some slightly quirky and not surprisingly, the exchange ended with the two candy queens duking it out for the M&M’s Nutcracker. Who won, you ask? Aaaaaah, you had to be there to find out!

There’s only two things that could bring this many fashionabulous people together at one time: the semi-annual FGI Trend Report Presentation and SHOES! And the combination of the two was TO DIE FOR! The Spring/Summer 2013 Trend Report was held at Neiman Marcus on Wednesday, December 5th. The video presentation highlighted all of the important trends in fashion design, fabric, cut, color, accessories and beauty for the Spring/Summer 2013 season, but more importantly, it came with commentary you can only get from an FGI Trend Report, compiled and narrated by the uber-fabulous Marylou Luther of the International Fashion Syndicate. The presentation then concluded with everyone heading down to every fashion gal’s “Happiest Place on Earth”...Neiman Marcus’s esteemed shoe department where giddy excitement was everywhere! What is it about women and shoes that just make us go absolutely bonkers! It was truly a fun night to be had by all! (Except maybe our checkbooks!) ;-)

I was born and raised in South India in the colorful and historic city of Hyderabad. Ever since I was kid, I was surrounded by women who had an elegant yet confident fashion sense. My aunt owned a children’s boutique, my mom & grandma made clothes for me when I was a kid and taught me the basics of stitching/ embroidery. And the best part was the shopping trips with my cousins & auntswe picked out fabrics/designs/ embellishments and always had custom made outfits. So I quickly developed an eye for fashion. Fast forward to 2003, when I worked for American Express, I was fortunate to live in New York City where I learned a lot more about fashion and always wondered if I could start a career in it.

Some of Sushmita’s favorite things… Jeans: True Religion Sneakers: Nike Watch: Movado Day Dress: Michael Kors Day Bag: Prada

But after working for 8 years I knew I still hadn't met my calling and finally with my husband’s support and encouragement I decided to pursue my dream of starting a boutique. Since summer of 2011 I have been working towards Flowers: Tulips this goal.
