let’s recap

SCOUTING THE VISITING TEAM

With a season-high 26 points from Hansen, the team earned its 10th Atlantic Sun win of the season with a 76-69 victory over USC Upstate Saturday afternoon at the Hodge Center.

• The Bears of Mercer are 12-10 this season with a 5-6 Atlantic Sun record. The record includes a loss to FGCU in January and a 76-71 win over Lipscomb in their most recent outing.

The Eagles took control of the game midway through the first half and extended their lead to a game-high 18 points in the early minutes of the second stanza. The team maintained the advantage through the majority of the contest and held a 14-point lead in the final four minutes, but saw as the Spartans produced a challenge late in the game. A 10-point run enabled the home team to cut the deficit to just four points in the final minute of action, but free throws down the stretch helped the Eagles survive the scare and earn a 76-69 win.

• As a team, the Bears are averaging 63.9 points per game this season, while allowing opponents to 64.9 points per contest. The Bears have successfully converted 39.7 percent of shots from the field and 25.5 percent of shots from long range. Bear foes are shooting 38.6 percent this season with a 32.4 percent clip from beyond-the-arc. The Bears average just 12.3 turnovers per game, while dishing out 14 assists and grabbing 5.6 steals.

Hansen led all players with 26 points on the day with a career-record six made 3-point shots.

• The Bears boast a versatile lineup with six players to watch this season. Offensively, the team is led by three Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team members in junior guards Precious Bridges and Brianna Williams and senior guard Kendra Grant. Bridges has averaged a team-high 15.7 points per games this season and has grabbed 24 steals but did not see the court against FGCU in the teams’ first meeting. Williams adds 13.1 points per game and currently leads the conference in career 20+ point games. Sharnea Boykin has facilitated the offense this season with 147 assists and ranks 10th in the nation in assists per game. Defensively, Teanna Robinson currently ranks second in the nation with 3.91 blocks per game and pulls down 10 rebounds per game. - The Bears earned the no. 3 seed in last season’s Atlantic Sun Conference tournament after finishing the season with a record of 20-12 overall and 13-5 in conference. This season, the Bears were selected to finish third in the conference preseason poll, behind just FGCU and Stetson.

A MID-MAJOR MARK

giving charity

FGCU earned the no. 14 position on the most recent edition of the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. The Eagles jumped Princeton, Harvard, Navy & South Dakota State this week. 8. Iona 1. Gonzaga 9. Hampton 2. Chattanooga 10. Marist 3. Wichita State 11. San Diego 4. Bowling Green 12. BYU 5. James Madison 13. Delaware 6. Albany 14. FGCU 7. Saint Mary’s

With a new emphasis on hand check rules, there is a common perception this season that there are more fouls called and in turn more free-throws awarded. However, since the transition to Division I in 2007, the Eagles have averaged 18.15 free throw attempts per game, and this season they have gone to the charity stripe an average of 20 times per game. The number of free throws made and attempted each year has fluctuated. Here we see that this year the number is not out of line with past seasons.

hot streak With 44 straight Atlantic Sun regular season wins, the Eagles held the nation’s best conference win streak in conference action but saw the streak snapped at NKU last weekend.

SIMPLY THE BEST In three-consecutive seasons the Eagles have set three separate 3-point records.

•350 made 3-pointers

•342 made 3-pointers

(A-Sun Season Record | 2010-11) (NCAA Season Record | 2012-13)

•22 made 3-pointers

(NCAA Game Record | Jan. 12, 2013)

The 350 made shots in 2010-11 did not count as a NCAA record due to the Eagles’ transition to DI.

nearing the top

stiff competition The Eagles saw a slate of tough competition through nonconference action this season • Two ESPN Top-25 teams #4/4 Stanford, #13/13 LSU • Six teams from last year’s NCAA Tournament Stanford, SDSU, USF, LSU, Saint Joseph’s, Stetson

Sarah Hansen’s accolades and milestones keep adding up. The senior currently ranks 11th among all-time Atlantic Sun players with 1,756 points. She sits 56 points out of the top-10. Hansen also ranks 22nd in all-time rebounds at 800 boards. She recently jumped one position in each category and is on track to finish among the top 10 in points and top 20 in rebounds

IN GOOD COMPANY

HANSEN’S AT IT AGAIN

Five active NCAA Division I coaches currently hold win percentages of over .800. Smesko joins Geno Auriemma (UConn), Kim Mulkey (Baylor), Tara VanDerveer (Stanford) & Matt Bollant (Illinois) in the elite group.

Hansen’s 28-point performance against Saint Joseph’s was the senior’s 17th 20+ point game of her career. The mark is tied with Mercer’s Briana Williams for the best in the Atlantic Sun.

HERE FOR A WHILE After playing six of eight games on the road, the Eagles return to Alico Arena for two games. The team will not leave the state of Florida for the remainder of the conference season as the only road games remaining are Jacksonville, UNF and Stetson.

familiar faces Of 12 nonconference teams on the schedule, the Eagles faced three teams during the 2012-13 season. Those contests resulted in a record of 2-1.

•69-45 win over FIU •79-60 loss to Charlotte •76-70 win over LSU

threes against no. 3 The Eagles faced RPI ranked no. 3 Stanford on Wednesday, Nov. 27 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Green and Blue put up a Hardwood Tournament of Hope single-game record 14 3-point baskets. Although the team fell to the perennial powerhouse, the mark stays as a season-high.

tough month Of the seven opponents the Eagles faced between November 27 and December 29, five teams appeared in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. After four straight games against tournament teams, the Eagles took on top-tier competition in Saint Francis and Virginia. They finished the streak by playing on a strong Saint Joseph’s team to conclude the nonconference stretch.

ALL IN All 11 players that have seen playing time this year have put up points for the Eagles. Sarah Hansen currently leads the team with 317 points on the year, while Bethany Murrell has recorded the fewest at 11 points.

HANSEN’S HEROICS Senior Sarah Hansen already holds nine all-time program records (points, total rebounds, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, field goals made, field goals attempted, steals, free-throws made, games started) and is on pace to set three more.
