Duke Ellington called his music not jazz, but “American Music,” and praised musical artists who impressed him as “beyond category.” Whether writing for the dance club or the concert hall, Ellington himself transcended these categories. You’ll hear the sublime results as the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra revisits three of Ellington’s orchestral jewels, Three Black Kings, Harlem, and The River.

Wednesday, November 8, 2017, 7:30 p.m. Mike Flanigin, guest on B3 Organ Stephen Guerra, Jr., director Hammond B3 master Mike “The Drifter” Flanigin joins the Frost Studio Jazz Band to play Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and the music of Count Basie. A disciple of the great Big John Patton, Flanigin is the go-to organist for guitar greats Jimmie Vaughan, Billy Gibbons, and Steve Miller.

Thursday, January 25, 2018, 7:30 p.m. John Daversa, director Dave Holland Residency with Nick Smart, conductor The music of Canadian trumpeter, flugelhornist, and composer Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014) can be deeply lyrical yet full of unexpected turns—from “soppy romantic,” as Wheeler himself once called it, to prickly avant-garde. The Frost Concert Band conducted by Nick Smart and anchored by bassist and composer Dave Holland, takes up the challenge.
