En la Río de Janeiro de los años 50 la vida no es fácil para las mujeres. Eurídice fantasea con ser pianista en Viena; su hermana Guida, con huir junto al hombre que le robó el corazón. En el fondo, ambas sueñan con escapar de una casa y una sociedad que las oprimen. Pero, como en todo melodrama, a la vuelta de la esquina las esperan los golpes del destino. Las mentiras y los prejuicios las mantendrán alejadas, mientras luchan para reencontrarse y sobrevivir en un mundo hecho por y para los hombres. Si el melodrama tradicional convierte el dolor en resignación, Aïnouz retoma el género para hacer todo lo contrario. Una vida de sometimiento era el destino de las chicas de los 50, pero el cine puede reconvertir el infortunio en injusticia social. In 1950s Rio de Janeiro, life isn’t easy for women. Eurídice dreams of being a pianist in Vienna; her sister Guida dreams of running away with the man who stole her heart. In the end, they’re both dreaming of escaping home and an oppressive society. But as in any melodrama, twists of fate lurk just around the corner. Lies and prejudice will split them up and they must fight to be reunited and survive in a world made by and for men. Where traditional melodramas tend to convert pain into resignation, Aïnouz reinterprets the genre to turn things upside down. In the 1950s, girls were destined for a life of submission, but cinema has the power to right historical injustices. Filmed in saturated colors and chock full of tears and rage, The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão pays homage to women who refuse to be cowed by su≠ering and indi≠erence.

En 2019 volvió a ese festival con A vida invisível, ganadora del Premio del Jurado de Un Certain Regard. An award-winning film director, screenwriter and visual artist, Karim Aïnouz was born in Brazil in 1966. His first feature, Madame Satã, premiered at Cannes in 2002. In 2019, he returned to the festival with The Invisible Life…, which won the Prix du Jury at Un Certain Regard.
