Introducing Characters
If you have something great on the set you have to keep up with it. Taking risks. I think about Caetano Veloso’s song in My Son My Son What Have Ye Done: while it is playing, all the three actors look at the camera. I am saying that because I want to encourage who wants to do cinema to make them capture from a vision, also outside the story flow. If you have great ideas, find a way to express what you feel, even if it seems you cannot totally understand them
Sometime it is good just to leave your character alone and no one can predict what is gonna happen next, sometimes these moments are very telling and very beautiful. In Elia Kazan’s Viva Zapata!, one of my favourite films, Marlon Brando plays Emiliano Zapata and the way how his leading character is introduced is absolutely wonderful, you can’t get any better

And you have to trust your camera operator, he will never have to move, sneeze, whisper, switch off the camera but capture silence exactly how it is, and that silence will suddenly become something extremely powerful.
