CHINESE CULTURAL EVENTS
Two events hosted by the University of Adelaide celebrating Chinese music and culture.
RENAO STREET A mid-autumn celebration
All over China, public spaces including streets, markets, parks and squares bustle with life, colour and noise. Along the streets, hawkers ply their trade, markets are crowded with shoppers and stalls are piled high with produce. The Chinese word for this is renao (热闹), which literally means ‘hot and noisy’. And that’s exactly the atmosphere of this unique event at the University of Adelaide when the Student Hub Central will be transformed into Renao Street (热闹街) to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Enjoy food, music, activities and all the vitality and excitement of Chinese hubbub in the Hub. HUB CENTRAL, UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE FRI 18 OCT 12 noon DURATION 5 hrs FREE 72
CHINESE MUSIC CONCERT
With a history stretching over thousands of years, Chinese music is one of the world’s oldest and greatest musical traditions. From the restrained, poetic sounds of the guqin played by a solitary scholar, to the raucous music accompanying China’s many festivals, music evokes the essence of Chinese culture in sound. The tradition continues today (accommodating itself to the modern world), with traditional instruments likely to be joined by electric guitars or laptops. Join the Elder Conservatorium Chinese Orchestra, the Chinese School of Music and Art, and guest artists in celebrating the fabulous sounds of Chinese music. ELDER HALL SUN 20 OCT 2pm DURATION 2 hrs 30 mins (inc. interval) FREE
The 2019 edition of OzAsia Festival, Adelaide’s boundary-pushing contemporary international arts festival.
