ALENA MURANG [MALAYSIA] Alena Murang is one of the first and few female sapé players, a traditional stringed lute belonging to Borneo’s Indigenous Sarawak communities. Performing serene melodies remembered by only a handful of elders from her grandparents’ generation, Alena’s mellifluous voice lends an ethereal dimension to her Kelabit and Kenyah songs that evocatively capture the lyrical essence of tradition with earthy simplicity.
