La vie de Pepe est d’être le sosie de Joey Smith, légende bientôt septuagénaire du rock philippin. Les deux ici ne font qu’un puisque le second interprète le premier, donc un peu lui-même. Le film et le personnage accueillent donc un abîme paradoxal : celui d’être soi tout en jouant perpétuellement à être un autre. Singing in Graveyards fait bientôt intervenir un nouvel enjeu déstabilisant puisque cet individu éparpillé doit écrire, en son nom, une chanson d’amour pour ouvrir un concert de son modèle. Bradley Liew instaure un ton singulièrement rêveur et drolatique pour cette chronique installée dans un quotidien qui ne cesse d’être troué et inquiété par l’imaginaire ; des percées non surlignées mais qui, au contraire, apparaissent bien comme la continuité de la réalité. Pepe’s occupation is to be the impersonator of Joey Smith, the almost seventy-year-old legend of Filipino rock. In this particular case, the two men are one, as the latter interprets the former, thereby somehow interpreting his own self. Hence, the film and its main figure welcome a paradoxical abyss: being oneself while always playing someone else. Soon, Singing in Graveyards builds in a new disruptive challenge when this scattered individual is forced to write a love song, in his own name, for the opening of a concert featuring his very model. Bradley Liew sets a dreamy and humorous tone for this chronicle anchored in an everyday life constantly pierced and hijacked by the imaginary. These imaginary openings are never emphasized; on the contrary, they appear like the continuation of reality.
