O cinema, arte crítica e mira apontada às virtudes e defeitos da realidade, torna-se indispensável enquanto ferramenta humanitária no mundo que hoje herdamos. Sob esta premissa, o Fest — Festival Novos Realizadores | Novo Cinema pretende dar a conhecer novos cineastas de todo o mundo, que, com uma frescura de olhar inerente a quem inicia um percurso criativo e crítico, fazem do cinema emergente, cinema urgente. No programa desta 13ª edição, encontramos histórias de personagens diferentes entre si e diferentes da realidade com que frequentemente contactamos, encontramos contextos que nos são, à partida, desconhecidos, estando todos estes díspares cenários unidos por um fio condutor: a validade das experiências individuais. Nesta edição, para além de trazer à ribalta novos talentos da 7ª arte, o Fest recorda valores chave da humanidade: a tolerância, o progresso, a coragem. Num generoso programa de curtas-metragens, destacam-se ainda 11 longas-metragens de ficção e documentário que concorrem ao Lince de Ouro, prefaciadas pelo filme de abertura Tom of Finland, de Dome Karukoski, que em 2009 venceu o Lince de Ouro e regressa agora ao Fest, pródigo, com a história de um importante símbolo lgbt.

Film, a critical art and a scope aimed at the virtues and flaws of reality, becomes an imperative humanitarian tool in the world we inherit today. Bearing this in mind, Fest — New Directors | New Films Festival shines a light on new filmmakers from all over the world who, with a freshness of the eye inherent to those beginning a creative path, transform emergent film into urgent film. On the program of this 13th edition, we find stories of characters different amongst themselves and different from the reality we are used to being in contact with. We find contexts that are alien to us. But all these different sets are brought together by a common premise: the validity of individual experience. In this edition Fest gives center stage to the new talents of the 7th art, while also remembering key values of humanity: tolerance, progress, courage. With a generous program of short films, it’s worth highlighting the 11 features in competition for the Golden Linx, prefaced by the opening film Tom of Finland, from director Dome Karukoski, who won the Golden Lynx in 2009 and now prodigally returns to Fest with a story about an important lgbt symbol.

Touko Laaksonen, um oficial condecorado, volta a casa, depois de servir o seu país na Segunda Guerra Mundial. Porém, a vida na Finlândia, durante o período de paz, apresenta-se igualmente perigosa. Touko encontra refúgio e liberdade na sua arte: desenhos homo-eróticos livres de inibições, tornando-se no estandarte de uma geração e abrindo caminho para a inevitável revolução lgbt. A abertura com Tom of Finland, um dos mais referenciados filmes do momento na Europa, marca o regresso de Dome Karuskoski ao Fest, depois do galardão de 2009 com Home of the Dark Butterflies.

Touko Laaksonen, a decorated officer, returns home after a harrowing and heroic experience serving his country in ww2, but life in Finland during peacetime proves equally distressing. He finds refuge in his liberating art, specializing in homoerotic drawings free of inhibitions, becoming the emblem of a generation of men and fanning the flames of a gay revolution. The opening of the event with Tom of Finland, one of the most talked about films of the moment in Europe, marks the return of director Dome Karukoski, after having won at Fest in 2009 with Home of the Dark Butterflies.

Lao Shi, um taxista honesto e trabalhador, vê-se envolvido num atropelamento causado por um cliente embriagado. O desespero e a consciência obrigam-no a levar a vítima ao hospital. Mas o complexo sistema burocrático chinês deposita toda a responsabilidade a Lao Shi, que se vê obrigado a acarretar com todas as despesas. Pressionado pela família, o estado de espírito e essência do protagonista transforma-se radicalmente. Um dos mais requintados thrillers psicológicos do momento, Old Stone, com o seu final surpreendente, é simplesmente um filme obrigatório.

Lao Shi is an honest and hardworking taxi driver, who one day runs over a cyclist due to the actions of a drunken client. Despair and a good conscience force him to take the victim to the hospital. But the complex bureaucratic system in China is brutal and unforgiving, and all responsibility is placed on Lao Shi’s shoulders, who now has to cover all expenses. Pressured by his family, his state of mind and essence is radically transformed. One of the most refined psychological thrillers in recent years, Old Stone, with its surprising ending, is simply an obligatory film.

Num armazém industrial, um grupo de pessoas completam as suas tarefas profissionais sob o olhar atento e ruidoso de uma audiência. Entre eles estão um trabalhador da construção civil, um mecânico, um perito em informática, uma operadora de telemarketing e uma costureira. Será uma exposição artística? Uma performance experimental? Um reality show? Ninguém sabe! Mas à medida que chovem ordens da administração, que resultam em conflitos entre os trabalhadores, desesperam por saber a quem pertence a mão invisível que os domina.

In a bare industrial warehouse in front of an audience (which we never see), a group of people are carrying out their jobs: a bricklayer, a butcher, a dressmaker, a telemarketer, a waiter, a warehouse worker, a mechanic, an IT worker and a cleaner, who mechanically do and undo their work. It is an exhibition? A performance? A reality show? No one knows! As the orders rain down from above, creating several conflicts among the workers, they eventually rebel against the invisible hand that dominates them.

Quando Lena é, aos 17 anos, violada por um professor, que por sinal é bem amado por todos na escola e no lar, escolha manter-se em silêncio. A repressão interior a que é forçada levam-na a um hospital psiquiátrico, onde conhece outros jovens profundamente perturbados. Uma serie de eventos resultam com que Lena aceita sujeitar-se à terapia electroconvulsiva. Quando regressa ao mundo lá fora, as memorias do passado são indiferentes ao processo de recuperação. Desta feita ela não caíra no mesmo abismo de auto-destruição e enfrentará de frente o seu trauma.

When 17 year old Lena is raped by one of teachers, whom everyone else in school and at home seems to love, she chooses to stay silent. Her extreme inner repression leads her to a psychiatric ward, where she meets other like-minded troubled youth. A series of events unfolds resulting in her acceptance of electroconvulsive therapy. When she returns to the world the terrible memories seems to take over nonetheless. This time, however, she does not fall into the same abyss of self-hate and instead tries to face the trauma.

A vida tornou-se intolerável para Nick, de 23 anos, que está convencido que é uma pessoa geneticamente maldosa. Consequentemente, ele aparece na Universidade de Aarhus com uma arma no seu bolso, para disparar sobre os seus colegas estudantes. Ao chegar, descobre que um acidente tragico matou a turma inteira. Enquanto todos pensam que a sua tristeza aparente é uma consequência natural do acidente, Nick deambula pela cidade pronto a explodir a qualquer momento. Needle Boy é um exercício provocador que nos tenta decifrar a mente de um potencial assassino em série.

Life has become unbearable for 23 year old Nick who is convinced that he’s an evil person. Consequently, he shows up at Aarhus University with a gun in his pocket wanting to shoot his fellow students. At arrival he find out a tragic accident has already killed all his class. While many believe his apparent sadness is the result of such news, Nick roams the streets of the city ready to explode at any moment. Needle Boy is an exercise in provocation that attempts to decipher the mind of a serial killer in the making.

Com os anos 90 como pano de fundo, e com a cena Grunge a pairar no ar, um triângulo amoroso entre dois rapazes e uma rapariga adolescente resulta numa morte misteriosa. À medida que a interrogação policial tenta decifrar as memorias dispersas das personagens, a audiência é encaminhada por uma viagem a um passado que muitos de nós recordamos detalhadamente, sob a orientação de Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, um dos mais promissores e jovens realizadores seleccionados em Sundance, onde com As You Are venceu o prémio do Júri.

Set in the 90’s, with the Grunge scene lurking in the atmosphere, a love triangle between two teenage boys and one girl results in an unsolved mysterious death. As the police interrogation rummages through the characters’ disparate memories, we travel into a past many of us still remember in great detail through the vision of Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, one of the most promising and youngest ever selected filmmakers in Sundance, and who took the mega event by storm where he received the Jury Prize for As You Are.

Guiados por Vestine, uma extravagante estrela de rádio, o filme descobre a sexualidade do Ruanda, revelando com humor e espontaneidade o mistério da ejaculação feminina. Sacred Water confronta o espectador ocidental com a sua própria intimidade e emerge-o na descoberta do Ruanda contemporâneo pela forma mais secreta – através do prazer feminino.

The documentary Sacred Water throws itself without reservation into the contemporary culture of Rwanda, in the most intimate way possible: through sex and exploring in particular the female ejaculation. Keep calm: this is not pornography nor an exploitative film. It is simply the re-discovery of a culture and heritage that we know very little about. This feature documentary by the Belgian director Olivier Jourdain was one of the great hits of the last edition of idfa in Amsterdam, the great Mecca of documentary filmmaking.

Um psiquiatra em pré-reforma leva-nos por uma viagem desconfortável pelo Inferno de Dante na Terra: um hospital psiquiátrico perdido algures na Sibéria que, pela primeira vez, permitiu a entrada das câmaras. Enquanto o médico se dispersa em questões metafísicas e na mistificação da alma e doença mental, torna-se impossível para a audiência não se questionar sobre o tratamento destes pacientes, na Rússia e em qualquer outro sítio. Esta é uma questão que o realizador polaco Wojciech Kasperski deixa em aberto para que cada um decida por si próprio.

A nearly retired psychiatrist takes us through an uncomfortable journey to Dante’s Inferno on Earth: the ward of a psychiatry hospital lost somewhere in Siberia, which for the first time opened its doors to the cameras. While the doctor disperses himself in metaphysical question about the soul and the nature of mental illness, it is impossible for the audience not to question the treatment of the patients, in Russia or anywhere else for that matter. This is a question that Polish director Wojciech Kasperski leaves wide open for each one of us to decide by him or herself.

Um jogador de hóquei no gelo das camadas mais jovens vê a sua virada do avesso quando, num momento de violência durante um jogo outro jogador, sofre uma grave lesão. Num só momento o protagonista é ostracizado pela equipa e pela própria comunidade. Enquanto tenta lidar com as consequências, desesperadamente à procura de reconciliação e um sentido de identidade, a sua transição pessoal acabará por iluminar vários problemas sistémicos sobre a violência.

A young junior hockey player’s life is shattered by an in-game act of violence. In an instant his life is abruptly turned upside down; torn from the fraternity of the team and the coinciding position of prominence, he is cast as a pariah and ostracized from the community. As he struggles with the repercussions of the event, desperate to find a means of reconciliation and a sense of identity, his personal journey ends up illuminating troubling systemic issues around violence.

Já um dos mais badalados filmes dos últimos 12 meses, Park, de Sofia Exarchou, leva-nos a um dos mais simples e importantes símbolos da cultura grega: a aldeia olímpica construída propositadamente para os jogos de 2004. As novas ruínas são o pano de fundo para esta história sobre juventude desesperada por reconhecimento, reflectindo assim uma cultura fragmentada, depois de vários anos de austeridade brutal. À medida que o protagonista, um rapaz de 17 anos chamado Dimitris, tenta fugir desta realidade, a lente de Exarchou mostra-nos o que é crescer sem qualquer perspectiva de futuro.

One of the year’s most talked about films, Sofia Exarchou’s Park takes us into the ultimate symbol of Greek culture: the Olympic village, built for the 2004 edition of the games. The ruins of what’s left of the Olympic village are the setting of this story of wild youth and acceptance, reflecting how a nation’s culture has been left in tatters after years of imposed austerity. As the protagonist, the 17 year old Dimitris, is trying to run away from this reality, we take a deep look into the struggle of a generation growing up without a future.

Anos de um sistema judicial duvidoso e corrupto levam vários milhões de russos a optar por colocar sempre uma câmara no tablier dos seus automóveis. Em caso de acidente, haverá sempre provas. Outro dos resultados são os múltiplos vídeos que circulam na Internet, revelando as estradas da Rússia de Putin como um campo de batalha. Do insólito ao surpreendente, tudo pode acontecer. Dmitrii Kalashnikov fez muito mais do que uma mera compilação. Através de uma edição pertinente, inteligente e provocadora, despiu o verdadeiro carácter da Rússia contemporânea.

Years of a dubious and corrupt judicial system have led to many millions of Russians to install cameras on their car dashboards. In case of accident there will always be proofs. Another result is the hundreds of videos circulating on the web, revealing the roads of Putin’s Russia as a battlefield. From the surprising to the outrageous, anything can happen. Dmitrii Kalashnikov has produced much more than a mere compilation. Through a pertinent, intelligent and provocative editing work he has undressed the true character of contemporary Russia.

Duas velhas amigas que não se encontravam há vários anos combinam um jantar. Os respectivos companheiros dificilmente podiam ser mais opostos. Um é polícia, perito em desmantelamento de multidões e protestos, e acaba de perder as estribeiras e alvejar um manifestante no olho com uma bala de borracha. O outro é um jovem militante de esquerda que acaba de regressar do hospital, depois de ser alvejado no olho durante um protesto. E assim começa a comédia negra do ano, explorando e trocando as voltas ao ambiente de austeridade que se vive na Espanha contemporânea.

Two old friends that had not seen each other for years arrange a dinner date. Their respective partners could hardly be more opposed. One is a policeman, an expert in crowd demobilization and protests, and he has just returned home from losing his cool and shooting a protester in the eye with a rubber bullet. The other is a left wing militant youth just out of the hospital, after having been shot in the face during a protest. And thus begins the dark comedy of the year, exploring and turning upside down the austerity ambience that dominates contemporary Spain.

O Fest — Training Ground é a secção educacional do festival, sendo atualmente um dos maiores fóruns de educação em cinema do mundo: com mais de 20 masterclasses e workshops, apresentado por profissionais de topo e com mais de 500 participantes vindos de todo o mundo. É fornecido um horário e sinopse de cada atividade educativa, para que cada participante possa criar o seu próprio horário de acordo com as suas necessidades e interesses pessoais. Para além de aprenderem com peritos da indústria, os participantes podem também partilhar as suas experiências e alargar as suas redes de contactos com os outros participantes presentes, num ambiente relaxado mas energético.

Fest — Training Ground is the educational section of the festival, which is currently one of the world’s biggest learning forums in film. It hosts more than 20 masterclasses and workshops presented by top film professionals and it gathers over 500 participants from all over the world. Provided with the timetable and the synopsis of every training activity, each participant can create their own attendance calendar according to their personal needs and interests. Besides learning from the experts, participants will be able to share their experience and widen their contact list with other trainees in a relaxed but energetic environment.

FEST — Pitching Forum Uma oportunidade para novos e emergentes realizadores divulgarem os seus projetos e apresentá-los a um grupo de distintas figuras da indústria, ligadas a áreas como financiamento, desenvolvimento e produção. O programa consiste em sessões dedicadas de treino (21–23 de Junho) e sessões de pitching abertas ao público (24–25 de Junho).

An opportunity for young emerging directors to unveil their projects and present them to a distinguished group of industry experts: financiers, developers and producers. The program consists of dedicated training sessions (June 21st– 23rd) and open to public pitching sessions (June 24th – 25th).

Networking Space Apesar do programa intensivo recheado com vários eventos oficiais, o Fest disponibiliza também espaço para atividades mais casuais (ex: os Networking Dinners e as Fest Nights). Um dos principais objetivos do festival é criar um ambiente aberto e relaxado de networking e troca de conhecimento num contexto informal.

Networking space - Despite its intense program, filled with many official events, Fest also provides space for more casual activities (e.g. the Networking Dinners and Fest Nights). One of the festival’s main goals is to create an open and relaxed atmosphere for networking and knowledge exchange in an informal context.

FESTinha O Festinha é a secção do Fest — Novos Realizadores | Novo Cinema dedicada ao público mais jovem, com sessões de cinema gratuitas, no casino de Espinho, para crianças e jovens entre os 3 e os 16 anos. Estas sessões têm como objectivo suscitar o interesse e curiosidade das crianças/jovens em relação ao cinema, ao mesmo tempo que se pretende estimular o seu espírito crítico, uma vez que nestas sessões irão seleccionar as melhores obras, sendo assim membros de um júri de cinema. O Festinha estará também inserido no Festival Village, um espaço de contacto com a comunidade e visitantes de Espinho, em pleno coração da cidade – na Alameda 8.

FESTival Village No Festival Village, na Alameda 8, haverá muita animação entre os dias 20 e 25 de Junho, com diversas atividades com a colaboração do serviço educativo da Câmara Municipal de Espinho: jogos didáticos, simulações de filmagens, realidade aumentada, entre outros. A participação nestas atividades é gratuita, apenas limitada à capacidade dos espaços onde decorrem.

Festinha is the section of Fest — New Directors | New Films Festival that is dedicated to younger audiences, with free film sessions held at Casino de Espinho, for kids and teens aged 3 to 16. The goal with these sessions is to broaden the curiosity of younger audiences towards film, while also stimulating critical thinking, by making them a jury board that selects the best film of each session. Festinha is part of the Festival Village, a point of contact between the festival and the community/visitors of Espinho, right in the heart of the city: Alameda 8.

At the Festival Village, at Alameda 8 there will be plenty of animation between the 20th and the 25th of June, with several activities programmed in partnership with the educational services of Espinho City Hall: educational games, filming simulations, Augmented Reality, among many others. These activities are free of charge and only limited to the venue’s capacity.
