AB32 will be weakened and delayed but is here to stay – what is your mitigation strategy for AB32-lite? • California’s clean energy laws have come under major opposition since their inception in 2006 by industry bodies raising legal challenges, emphasizing the costs to various industries, and claiming potentially negative impacts on California’s economy. • Chevron is at the center of this debate, accounting for 27% of California’s total refining capacity, 35% of the refining CO2 emissions, and 10% of the state’s total 419 million metric tons of CO2e. • We believe legal opposition and lobbying efforts will help reduce the stringency of key regulatory provisions under an “AB32 Lite” scenario, but will not entirely limit the impact of the AB32 provisions. • Even under the “AB32 Lite” scenario, refiners must adapt their carbon management portfolio to optimize their operations in the near-term and long-term of this new regulatory compliance landscape. • We can assist Chevron by developing the optimum approach to policy compliance, technology development, and embedding the right plan at the right time within the organization. AB 32 impacts about 350 businesses, representing 600 facilities, and will require an overall 15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 What is AB 32? “Assembly Bill 32 “ or the “Global Warming Solutions Act” mandates that by 2020, greenhouse gas emissions in California be reduced to 1990 levels.

Who does it affect? • Producers / Generators of electricity including 600 power plants, factories, and industrial facilities. • Suppliers of transportation fuel, primarily refiners, facing changing operating regulations and demand • Consumers / Distributors of energy will likely pay higher prices as the cost to produce energy increases. • Clean Energy Sector - $3 of every $5 invested in the country’s clean technology sector comes to California, five times more than state’s nearest competitor.

How does it impact energy companies? • AB 32 is estimated to cover energy sources that generate 85% of California’s GHG emissions. • Regulations will require an estimated 15% cut in emissions from 2008 levels and an estimated 30% reduction from forecasted emissions. • Potential refining capacity decreased by 20%. • Energy Producers will need to change their operations to meet regulatory standards. • California entrepreneurs opened more green businesses (10,209) and created more new jobs (125,390) from 1998 to 2007 than any other state.

Allowances assist the industry in complying with emissions reductions targets by the year 2020. Each subsequent compliance period gradually increases the emissions that the industry is accountable for. Over time, refiners will be responsible for more emissions and receive less assistance (Industry Adjustment Factors). Emissions that exceed the allowance in each compliance period will have to be abated or offset by the refiner. Starting with the second compliance period in 2015, the industry will be responsible for 25% of total emissions. LCFS will drive California to be a significant early user of advanced biofuels •

End of third Compliance Period of Cap-and-Trade Program

In response to the Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS) implemented nationwide and the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), consumption of advanced biofuels increases. California uses a large fraction of the total advanced renewable fuel pool in the early years of the projection. The advanced fuel category includes ethanol produced from sugar cane (but not from corn starch), biodiesel, renewable diesel, and cellulosic biofuels. Starting about 2030, cellulosic biofuels is forecast to ramp up in California and other states. Outside California, production and consumption of cellulosic biofuels increases rapidly enough to cause a decline in California’s fraction of the total advanced biofuels market. Starting in about 2035, corn ethanol with low carbon intensity begins to displace imported sugar cane ethanol in California.

Ambitious targets for LEV/ZEV vehicle deployment place responsibilities with refiners LEV/ZEV • In 2015, 10% of government light-duty fleet purchases must be ZEVs, climbing to 25% of light duty purchases by 2020. • ZEV plans targets up to 1 million vehicles by 2020 through rebates, incentives, and other support Clean Fuels Outlet • When a ZEV fleet reaches 20,000 vehicles, or 10,000 vehicles in any ARB district, the refiners/importers or “their contractor” is expected to establish, maintain, and operate the Clean Fuel Outlets for this fleet • Particular focus is placed on hydrogen which is most likely to struggle with infrastructure build-out • If successful in meeting growth targets, current projections suggest that 68 stations will be required by the end of 2015 for initial vehicle launch and ultimately 100 stations for full commercial launch.

WHAT’S GOING ON? 1.9 million people live in Kumasi, Ghana, as of 2012, an increase of .5 million people over 2011 estimates. Currently, human waste and environmental damage is exacerbated by climate change and flooding, creating a dangerous public health crisis in the neighborhoods of Akrom, Adukrom, and Sawaba. Our project speculates on how the quality of life and health for these communities could be improved today.

Our studies began with issues of ecology and changing local perceptions about sanitation and environmental priorities by creating productive economic opportunities. We discovered that neighboring communities to Akrom also had disrupted ecologies and services that threatened schools, clinics, and sanitation sites at public toilets.

We expanded the scope of the site and its ecologies to address the integration of human and natural cycles in this community to improve safety conditions immediately, to demonstrate feasible changes that can define results and efficiency. HOW WILL IT WORK OUT?

Issues of sanitation and water management are inescapable. In developing countries, population growth coupled with urbanization has outpaced the development of sanitation infrastructure, leaving the urban poor, virtually without sanitation facilities in many countries. Of the about 2.4 billion people worldwide lacking access to basic sanitation, 80 percent are in Asia and 13 per cent in Africa (WHO & UNICEF, 2000).

Immediate improvements to the toilet/waste management cycle, storm water processing system, public services and infrastructure as new grounds of productive landscapes to accommodate new growth over the long term, our system creates sustainable value. Smart densification and better transportation connections at improved paved areas and roads enhance access to jobs in the center city of Kumasi. The innovative use of human and animal excrement as an economic resource, whereby its conversion into energy (harvesting methane gas) and fertilizers can be used in urban agriculture or sold to farmers. Relevant precedents have been identified for grey/black water management and processing in contained wetlands, as well as modular public toilet systems.

Water and sanitation facilities are those worst affected in densely populated or fast-growing population areas as a result of increased congestion. In very high population density neighborhoods in cities with growth rates of up to 4.4 per cent (UNDP, 2002), these sanitation problems can be especially devastating to downstream communities. Ghana’s sanitation infrastructure is under extreme pressure in urbanized areas where the migrating poor tend to be most concentrated. The consequences are extreme pressures exerted on social infrastructures in these regions. We have learned from definitive case studies that global standard practices and RFPs (requests for proposal) by institutional funding sources can be petitioned by municipal policy and administration leadership toward a fast-track construction of vital infrastructure and public services. WHAT’S GONE RIGHT? Despite the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s directive that all toilets be connected to a centralized sewage system, this long-term prospect has an indefinite timeline all the while the existing public health risks continue. We propose to unscramble impacted public service and infrastructure, and we prioritized waste management/ environmental recovery as the initial critical issues to “leapfrog” the fast-track development of impacted communities.

We also designed programs from locally managed larger public works projects, with municipal oversight and efficiency controls from international institutional funding, to stimulate the necessary private development to achieve sustainable quality of life improvements.

The Barkese Reservoir (seen in image at left) is the main source of potable drinking water for the residents of Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana with an projected population of 1.9 million people in 2012. This reservoir provides 80% of the total pipe-borne water to the Kumasi metropolis. This important watershed is placed at risk by upstream contaminants from disease prone communities due to lacking sanitation infrastructure.

When these contaminants soak in rainstorms and floods, which are amplified by the lack of root systems to secure the soil from wide-spread erosion, then a toxic brew of disease and displacement occurs in these natural areas where people are informally occupying. This cycle of disease and displaced households recurs annually with inconsistent regularity, and poses compounded risk to neighboring communities as climate changes shift weather pattern periods and rates of rainfall.

Located in the Bronx Borough of New York City, Huntâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Point is is a peninsula that through the years has been host many various programs that range from luxury villas and meadows to Concrete Plants, manufacturing shops and dense residential zoning.. Hunts Point is a mayor access to the Tri-State area and currently hosts the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s larges distribution center: Hunts Point Market. It is composed of a rich fabric of medium-size textile, metal and food-processing industrial facilities, and with the recent incorporation of the Sunshine Bronx Business Incubator, there is strong projection towards developing cleaner and more sophisticated industrial settlements. This project pretends to take advantage of this situation, redeveloping a set of three new industrial corridors, and empowering a new vessel that will serve functions of remediation for the water quality in the Long Island Sound, and its effects in generating a recreation industry in the area.

City Point is located in the city of New Haven, Connecticut. Situated where the West River empties into the harbor, areas adjacent to the original peninsula have been lled in, broadening its shoulders, and Interstate 95 has cut across it. The Oyster Point Historic District is a 26-acre (11 ha) historic district encompassing an area of relatively old buildings in City Point south of I-95.

New England: Long Island Sound Long Island Sound is an estuary of the Atlantic Ocean, located in the United States between Connecticut to the north and Long Island, New York to the south. The mouth of the Connecticut River at Old Saybrook, Connecticut, empties into the sound. On its western end the sound is bounded by the Bronx and Westchester County, New York, and connects to the East River. On its eastern end it opens to Block Island Sound. Accelerated demands for development, declining water quality in harbors and embayments, and difficulties sustaining a healthy maritime economy, led us to a fundamental question: What is the Value of the Long Island Sound?

To quantify and qualify its intrinsic value, we analyzed this Region via four domains of engagement: Ĺ&#x2013; 1RGP5RCEG9KVJKPVJGPGZV[GCTUVJGRTQLGEVGFRQRWNCVKQPKPETGCUGKPVJG.QPI Island Sound coastal area could result in near "build-out" under current zoning, eliminating many of the open areas that presently exist. Environmental and Safety Effects

The Need

Potential energy savings exceed 8 billion gallons of diesel fuel per year in the U.S. alone, with a 72 million metric ton decrease in CO2 emissions. Pollution and noise emitted by freight carriers will plummet, as will injuries and deaths due to traffic accidents involving heavy trucks. Environmental degradation seems insurmountable. Government and industry experts are straining to provide improvements but railroads, trucks and aircraft are mature technologies with fundamental barriers to improvement.

Transportation is 11% of the U.S. GDP - a trillion dollars a year - with more than half devoted to freight. Electronic commerce and expanding international trade demands faster, more reliable, less expensive transport than ever before. But energy costs are rising. Highway, railway, and airport congestion has gone from bad to worse with the heightened need for security.

Guideway development in Europe and Asia has produced workable guideway solutions, although guideway cost optimization is still not complete. In particular, lowered cost guideways intended to meet the civil structures lifetime requirements, while preserving acceptable maintenance profiles, still require development. The primary issue in maglev system guideway structural design is deflection. The weight of the vehicles compared to the guideway structural weight is such that the designer must primarily search for a way to produce a lightweight, stiff structure at minimum cost.

This search naturally leads into lightweight steel structures, since steel is roughly three times stiffer than alternative metals. Concrete solutions, although cost effective, have other issues including weight, â&#x20AC;&#x153;creepâ&#x20AC;? soil conditions, and operational limitations (potential snow and ice buildup) in harsh environmental conditions.

Other countries have established vibrant rail systems, but these larger networks answers to highly sophisticated economic stakeholders. What Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m proposing is an appropriate platform for the unfolding tuture human drama, with an urban proposal to connect the cities of Las Vegas and Los Angeles via a regional network of magnetic/electric powered high-speed trains to make high-speed train travel spectacular.

Factors that impede travel between metropolitan regions can be compared to the “Friction Resistance” in pipes that carry water from source to receptor. The properties of the pipe determine the speed and efficiency of transmission and its effective capacity. Transportation technologies that can “peel away” as many of these travel inhibitors as possible, offer Canadians far greater mobility. Today in North America, no transportation mode offers the traveling public the service attributes that can provide the necessary urban inter-action to link metropolitan regions together to achieve a shared urban agglomeration of knowledge workers. The air mode does provide incr door. A successful transportation mode will be one that can emulate the airlines’ inter-city travel time (for distances up to 400 kilometers) as well as the convenience, ease of use and time-reliability of an intra-urban mass transit service. In such a scenario, and for planning purposes, ‘inter-city’ and ‘intra-urban’ can be considered one and the same market.

is a graduate of The Swedish Institute and co-founder of Skylight Dance Theatre. Amanda brings to the field of massage a practical and personal understanding of the body and how it works.  The disciplined physical training program required for a dance career combined with the science of massage has prepared Amanda for the rigors and delicacy of working with and around injuries to facilitate the healing process. 

received his Associate’s Degree in Occupational Studies from the Swedish Institute, encompassing a wellness approach drawing from both Eastern and Western modalities. Initially, he began his Healing Arts studies at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California focusing on somatics and integrative approaches to the body through movement and massage therapy.  However, he feels of equal importance was his education into the musculoskeletal system through sports related injuries and training he embraced as a competitive tennis player and triathlete.  

She is well-versed in Western and Eastern modalities and helps her clients stay in, or return to, top form through the techniques of Swedish, Sports, Deep Tissue, Medical, Relaxation, and/or Shiatsu massage.  Amanda also holds a BA in Fine Arts from St. Olaf College where she graduated magna cum laude.

Currently he works with the USTA Sports Medicine Team providing sports massage to the world’s top ranked tennis players and has returned to Esalen teaching bodywork and somatic movement.   He looks forward to working with Kima’s clients to provide a complementary and dynamic support on their journey towards optimal health.
