Mit der Einweihung des damaligen Biathlonstadions anlässlich der Armeespartakiade öffnete Oberhof 1983 die Tore zu internationalen Wettkämpfen. Das Weltcup-Stadion, in dem seit 1984 regelmäßig Biathlon-Weltcup-Rennen ausgetragen werden, wurde in den Jahren 2001 bis 2003 für die Biathlon-Weltmeisterschaften im Jahr 2004 umfangreich umgebaut. Mit der Fertigstellung der Arena hat der Reiz von Skiwettkämpfen in und um Oberhof stark zugenommen. Hier fanden seitdem auch Weltcup-Wettbewerbe im Langlauf und der Nordischen Kombination statt. Und nicht nur die Begeisterung der Fans, sondern auch die einmalige Atmosphäre im „Kessel“ am Grenzadler ließen Oberhof zu einem Mekka des Biathlonsports werden. So zählt der Oberhofer Biathlon-Weltcup nach wie vor zu den absoluten Höhepunkten im Wettkampfkalender des Internationalen Biathlon-Verbandes IBU. Nicht zuletzt deshalb erhielt Oberhof im September 2018 den Zuschlag für die Biathlon-Weltmeisterschaften 2023. Für dieses Highlight und mit Blick auf zukünftige Wettkämpfe und Veranstaltungen wird die ARENA am Rennsteig nachhaltig umgebaut und umfangreich modernisiert.
Das absolute Highlight in Oberhof ist die LOTTO Thüringen Skisport-HALLE, die einzigartig in Mitteleuropa ist und zwischen dem Alpinhang und der LOTTO Thüringen ARENA am Rennsteig ihren Platz gefunden hat. Auf 10.000 qm wurde ein Paradies für Leistungs- und Freizeitsportler geschaffen. Durch eine konstante Temperatur von minus 4 Grad Celsius und einer genau regelbaren Luftfeuchtigkeit bietet die Skihalle 365 Tage im Jahr eine optimale Schneequalität. Ergänzt wird diese einzigartige Sportstätte durch die angegliederte Schießhalle mit vier Schießbahnen für Kleinkaliber und Luftgewehr.
Im Bereich des Zielgeländes der Rennschlittenbahn Oberhof befindet sich eine Startanlage (Baujahr 2001), die für den Rennrodel-, Skeletonund Bobsport gleichermaßen für Training und Wettkämpfe genutzt wird. Im Sommer 2013 wurde die gesamte Startanlage eingehaust, die wetterunabhängig eine kombinierte Sommer- sowie Winternutzung ermöglicht.
Die Rennschlitten- und Bobbahn Oberhof wurde 1971 als zweiter künstlich vereisbarer Eiskanal der Welt eingeweiht. Nach mehreren Umbauten beträgt die Gesamtlänge heute 1.354,5 m. Bei einem Höhenunterschied von 113 Metern können 15 Kurven durchfahren werden. Der jährlich stattfindende Rennrodel-Weltcup gilt als einer der zuschauerträchtigsten im internationalen Vergleich.
In the finish area of the luge track is a start hall (year of construction: 2001) for bobsleighs, skeletons and luge. The hall is equally used for training and competition purposes. In summer 2013, the area was encased to provide its utilisation regardless of seasons or weather.
The luge track Oberhof was completed in 1971 as the second artificially frozen over track in the world. After several renovations the total length of the track is now 1,354.5 m. There is a total of 15 turns, that covers a vertical drop of 113 meters. The annual luge world cup in Oberhof is one of the most visited luge competitions in international comparison.
World Cup Stadium
Oberhof opened its doors for international biathlon championships in 1983 with the inauguration of the former biathlon stadium for the army spartakiade. The world cup stadium, regular venue of biathlon world cup races since 1984, was renovated and enlarged for the Biathlon World Championships in 2004 in the years 2001-2003. With the completion of the biathlon stadium Oberhof has become a lot more attractive for skiing competitions. Since then it was also venue of world cup competitions in cross-country skiing and Nordic combined. Not only the enthusiasm of the fans but also the unique atmosphere in the stadium made Oberhof being a Mecca for biathlon. Therefore, the Biathlon World Cup Oberhof still is one of the highlights you can find in the competition calendar of the International Biathlon Union (IBU). Last but not least, in September 2018, the IBU Congress has awarded the Biathlon World Championships 2023 to Oberhof. With regard to this highlight and future competitions and events, the biathlon stadium is going to be sustainably renovated and extensively modernized.

The absolute highlight in Oberhof is the cross-country indoor skiing facility, which is absolutely unique in Central Europe and located between the ski-run and the LOTTO Thüringen ARENA. With an area of 10,000 m², this is a veritable paradise for sports enthusiasts and competition athletes alike, offering top-quality snow 365 days a year. This unique sports facility is completed by the adjacent shooting range hall with four separate shooting ranges for both small-calibre and air rifles.
