They are a clear example of someone who shows his work with pride. A very sacrified work that they have been fighting to be recognised as a job for years. These women sew fishing nets. It is not easy, it takes a lot of time, but they don’t want to do anything else.
It is beginning to get light at La Guardia, a small town in the south of Galicia. Rita, who is 60 years old, wakes up at seven in the morning to start a new working day. She may be up to fourteen hours sewing and repairing all kind of fishing nets. “We work as hard as we can.
We work until we feel we dont have more energy to go on. It has to be on this way, she says. At nine in the morning, ten Rita’s co-workers exhibit in the small harbor their skill with the hands, that have been harden during an entire life close to the Atlantic Ocean.
Most of people that have this job are in old age, but it is not Lidia’s case. She is 30 and her youth shines in the ambient. Lidia adores what she does. She has been working here for a few months, but she wants to do this labour forever.

She has been working here for a few months, but she wants to do this labour forever. Lidia is the only one than has not been taught by her mother. “My mother explain to me how to do this work when I was eight and I didn’t work in anything else since then”, tells Marina . There are more than 200 in Galicia and they put together in different organizations to fight for being recognised as workers. And finally, the Galician Government created an specific title for them. They show this certification with pride.
La Guardia offers a great panoramic view of how these women work. They are not always in the same place. They can be inside or outside depending of the day. Some of then, such us Antonio and Marina, come to Atalaia Baixo Mi単o, an organization that joins together a big group of them and that allows them to have more work with fare prices. There are not established prices and each one sells in the price that wants to. Their best salary is about 600 euros per month, but everybody agrees that this job has not timetable or fixed salary. But they love to do it. It is art.
