20-21 BOLIVIA I had high hopes when I first set off for Latin America some years ago, but I never expected it to be the catalyst for a major career change. I feel extremely privileged to be able to specialise in my passion for these countries and share my experience and knowledge of this amazing region. To me Latin America has it all, from the world famous ancient ruins of Machu Picchu and other great Inca sites, to the grand cities built by the Spanish and Portuguese colonists. There seems to be a neverending array of natural beauties from the Galapagos islands where the wildlife is endemic and unafraid of mankind, to the mighty Amazon where nature lovers experience the jungle. Beyond, there is one of the worlds greatest waterfalls in Iguazu and on the southern tip of the continent where the Patagonian region offers glorious national parks, mountain views and icy glaciers. Latin America is cosmopolitan with a diverse array of culinary styles, delicious wines and exciting pulsating rhythms which reach their crescendo during Rio’s famous Carnival. For me the hardest part of travelling to Latin America was when it came to boarding the flight home and I am sure you will feel the same reluctance. Sue-Ann Hamilton – Product Manager

Latin America

Why Choose Latin America? Latin America has something for everybody. From Mexico’s golden beaches to the stunning peaks of the Andes and the glacial lakes of Patagonia, the region is jam-packed with incredible natural beauty. Aspiring naturalists can go wild in the steamy expanses of the Amazon or discover the unique wildlife ecosystem of the volcanic Galapagos Islands. History buffs will love the Incan treasures of Machu Picchu and the Mayan pyramids of the Yucatan peninsula, while modern-day culture-vultures can enjoy the cafes and colonial boulevards of cosmopolitan Buenos Aires or join thousands of revellers on the streets of Rio for Carnival – the world’s biggest party. Choose one or more of the featured itineraries in this brochure, or contact Tempo Holidays to construct a tailor-made package for your own personal needs. Note that Latin America is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination, so hotels and flights can fill up quickly. We advise you to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Altitude Sickness Some Latin American cities and attractions are situated at an altitude greater than 3200m. The lack of oxygen at this height affects most people to some extent until they become acclimatised. Mild symptoms of altitude sickness include headaches, lethargy, dizziness, sleeping difficulties and loss of appetite. Severe symptoms include lack of coordination, drowsiness and nausea. We strongly recommended that you rest in your hotel after arriving in high altitude areas, and that you spend at least two days acclimatising to the lower oxygen levels before commencing any high-altitude trekking. Altitude sickness is especially common in Ecuador, the Andes, and the Altiplano regions of Peru, Bolivia and northern Chile. Photo: Machu Picchu Credit: Bianca Brooks

Torres Del Paine

Patagonia Patagonia encompasses a huge variety of natural highlights. This exciting area is home to the famous National Parks of Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares, as well as the Southern Icefields and Ushuaia – the world’s southernmost city.

Discover Torres del Paine

Torres del Paine National Park – Chile A UNESCO World Heritage site, the world-famous Torres del Paine National Park is not to be missed. Dominated by the three imposing granite towers of the Paine Massif, the park offers a stunning panorama of snow-clad peaks, glaciers and turquoise lakes, as well as a rich variety of wildlife.

4 days / 3 nights Departs from Punta Arenas airport Operates year round (Daily) Explore the beauty of this unique region with a variety of excursions from your base at the Hosteria Lago Grey, a hotel enjoying spectacular views of the mountains and magnificent Grey Glacier.

Getting there Flights operate from Santiago to Punta Arenas, a 400 km (6–7 hour) transfer by motor vehicle from the national park. You can also arrive by land from El Calafate (5 hours).

Tempo package inclusions • Private return transfers from Punta Arenas airport to Torres del Paine with Spanish-speaking driver only • 3 nights at the 4-star Hosteria Lago Grey • 3 breakfasts (B), 2 lunches (L), 3 dinners (D) • Coach excursions with bilingual guides • Torres del Paine National Park fee

When to go While the area’s microclimate means pleasant weather throughout the year, the best time to visit is during summer (November to March), when the region receives up to 18 hours of daylight every day. This is also the warmest, windiest and busiest time of year. Torres del Paine National Park is open all year round (‘explora’ Lodge, Hosteria Lago Grey), and although temperatures can get extremely cold, winter is renowned for producing crystal-clear days, less wind and less tourists. Please note that Patagonia is famous for having four seasons in one day, regardless of the time of year.

Exclusions: Tipping; meals unless otherwise stated; items of a personal nature.

Book well in advance Accommodation in the Torres del Paine National Park is limited, so we recommend booking well in advance. If your first choice is booked out, Tempo Holidays will offer you the best available alternative. One such option is the town of Puerto Natales, located 150 km from Torres del Paine. The town has a good selection of hotels with daily tours to the park.

Day 2 Torres del Paine National Park Enjoy a full-day excursion discovering the beautiful areas of Torres del Paine. Highlights include the famous Towers of Paine, The Horns, Salto Grande Waterfall and the beautiful lakes of Sarmiento, Nordenskjold and Pehoe. (BLD) Day 3 Torres del Paine National Park Take a half-day excursion to the magnificent Grey Glacier. Travel across Grey Lake toward the imposing glacier to experience this wonder up close. Spend the afternoon at your leisure. (BLD)

Why Choose Mexico? Great cultures like the Aztecs and Mayans thrived in Mexico, leaving behind awe-inspiring ancient ruins. Some of the best are Teotihuacan, outside Mexico City; Monte Alban and Mitla, close to Oaxaca; spectacular Palenque, set in the jungle; and Chichen Itza, the most famous of the Mayan sites on the Yucatan Peninsula. The country’s rugged scenery is also a highlight, particularly the Copper Canyon, a system of gorges four times larger than the Grand Canyon. And of course, no trip to Mexico is complete without a stay in Cancun or Playa del Carmen, beautiful beach resorts with fantastic restaurants and nightlife. Photo: Mexico City Credit: Shutterstock
