HELP THEM LEARN TO DRIVE SAFELY Driving is a risky business. In fact, traffic crashes are the leading cause of death and serious injury for young New Zealanders. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Practice is a practical driving programme to help learner drivers develop the skills they need to pass their restricted licence test. They get to practise driving in a variety of conditions, all under the watchful eye of a driving ‘guide’. This valuable experience helps them become safer drivers.
HOW IT WORKS PRACTICE IS COMPLETELY FREE
The programme is online and requires both a ‘driver’ and a nominated ‘guide’ who will help teach the driver the skills they need. The guide receives printed supporting materials to help them do this in a structured manner. This approach is backed by international research that found 40% fewer crashes occurred among young people – who received 120 hours of supervised driving experience before driving solo – compared to young people who received only 50 hours.
THE PRACTICE WEBSITE The Practice website is the hub of the programme. Here learner drivers sign up, learn about skills and nominate their guide. It includes: Online videos of key driving skills to show the driver and guide what to do A complete explanation of each skill and how to practise them A handy ‘tasklist’ so the driver always knows what to do next A progress bar so the driver always know where they’re up to Every driver who signs up is automatically in to win one of twenty $20 fuel vouchers.
DO IT DRIVING MANUAL
READ IT THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
FREE RESOURCES After registering the ‘guide’ is sent the DO IT Driving Manual. It contains step-by-step instructions showing them how to help their driver learn key driving skills. They also get the READ IT booklet, containing important information about learning to drive and any legal issues they’ll need to know about. Drivers get an interactive CD-ROM to help practise driving skills wherever there’s a computer.
GET INVOLVED Practice is a great way to help learner drivers stay safe on the roads and it’s completely FREE. Play your part by telling as many learner drivers as possible about the programme. Encourage drivers and guides to sign up at WWW.PRACTICE.CO.NZ or by calling 0800 772 284.
