I know I have said this before and do not wish to be repetitive, however, this again is an exciting time for us at First English. As a congregation we have become stronger in our financial stewardship and are at a point where we are looking to make a significant payment against the principal of the mortgage or even pay it off completely. We have continued to grow in our outreach to people in need around the world and in our local community and have the opportunity to improve the lives of those who are in need of transitional housing through Samaritas and working with our neighbors in the Regent Park section of Detroit to build a park and help them continue to make it a better and safer place to live. We have new Bible studies and book studies to grow in our fellowship and discipleship and are looking to implement new programs to provide more tools for parents to grow in faith with their children at First English and at home. There was a movie entitled “Waiting for Superman. The point of the title was when the man, an educator named Geoffrey Canada, was a child, he had hopes of being rescued from the crime, despair, and destruction around him; he was waiting for Superman. His mother told him there was no Superman. Superman was not real and was not going to save him. Yet, supermen and superwomen are real. Too often we wait for Superman. We wait for someone to come and rescue us, someone to come and change the world for us, someone who will solve all our problems. However, someone has already come, the Son of God someone who is super human. Jesus came and through Him has come the Holy Spirit given to each of us that we need not sit and wait but be the supermen and superwomen that we need, that the world needs. This is First English. I am excited because we, as a congregation, are not sitting and waiting. We are not waiting for someone to come along and make a difference, improve our situation, care for the needs around us. The supermen and superwomen, better known as disciples of Christ, of First English are serving in continuing and new ministries, growing our care for one another and for those around us and looking toward the future asking what else in the name of Christ Jesus can we do? We may not have a fortress of solitude but we have a sanctuary for the Holy God in which we gather together to worship and we may not have a cape but we have put on us the righteousness of Jesus Christ and called together as one in the body of Christ we go out into the world that is waiting and despairing and restoring their hope, not in a fictional superhero but in a present and real Savior, Christ the Lord. Yours In Christ<><

The 125th Anniversary of First English is only two years away! Now's the time to start planning. Anybody interested in being on the planning committee please contact either Jeff Gates ( or Mark Berkesch at (313) 886-4866 or, we would like to get started as soon as possible. In the meantime, even if you don't want to be on the committee, please search for church related photographs or memorabilia. Most items can probably be scanned and returned to you.

Global Barnyard Update Those piggy banks just kept on coming. We now have enough money for EIGHT family farms… amazing! Considering our goal was three family farms ($715 per family farm), we are so grateful for everyone’s support. The only ones not so thrilled – the bank – who had the “privilege” of counting over $1000 in change! Again, thank you for helping to feed families and erase hunger! Board of Social Action
