July 2019

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Thank you for such a wonderful celebration of the 25th anniversary of my ordination. I have been truly blessed to be here with you and by your love and kindness. It is a joy to journey with you in faith and look forward to the upcoming years as we continue to reach out into our community and world with the gospel and grow in love toward one another through Christ our Lord. Thank you for the stole that is being made, for the getaway to Frankenmuth, for all the gifts, the food, the special music and all the practice that went into it, all the effort that so many people made so this would happen and for being here with me and my family and lifting us up in prayer. Again, we are truly blessed as part of the First English family. As I listened to the beautiful words shared by Pastor Nicole and was surrounded by so many wonderful saints of God, I kept thinking about the other. I thought about the people who were visiting from some of my previous congregations. Char who was a great support to me as our preschool director and a confidant who helped me navigate some of the challenges of that first call. Dawn who has served as an inspiration in her dedication to studying the Scriptures. Pastor Nicole who has gone from being a confirmand and high school student that I served to a friend and colleague. Tom who worked with me in some very challenging instances and was a solid rock of reason and support who stood with me in the toughest of moments. Then there was my mother who provided for me and has loved me from the day I came into being. I would not be here if not for my dearest and most wonderful wife, Colleen. You can only imagine how tolerant, patient, and forgiving she has been. She has been the constant reminder of God’s love for me by her words and her love that has been far more than I ever deserved. My three sons who have taught me many things and have challenged me to be better than I am. And here and now, I am surrounded by so many loving and caring servants of Christ and blessed by the musical talents, dedication and caring of Bob who so lovingly cares for this body of Christ, and Renata who not only cares so lovingly and passionately for the youth, children and families of the congregation but is an incredible blessing as a faithful partner in ministry. Lastly, all of this is because of the grace of God who knit me together in my mother’s womb. Who claimed me in the waters of baptism, blessed me with salvation, has given me a family in Christ, has been present with me no matter how much I have pushed Him away, and who called me to the great honor of proclaiming the gospel and administering the sacraments as a pastor in the church of Jesus Christ. My life is what it is because of the other, because of those whom God has placed around me and the love and gifts they have shared. I thank God for everyone who reads these words and for all those who have made it possible for me to be who I am. As well, I thank all those who read these words and all those who have blessed me with their presence more than they will ever know. Yours In Christ<><

Thank you to everyone who donated flowers or cash for the Church gardens this year. They would not have looked so good without your help; and all the rain gave the flowers a great boost. The Gardening Team can always use extra help. Call Carol Sauter (313 881-6969 or email: alcarolsauter@comcast.net) for more information.

On June 16th, 2019 our group of nine youth and two adults formed a circle, clasped hands, prayed, and pile into a van destined for a week of community service in Pittsburgh, PA. The van, generously donated by the Milne family, carried mattresses, pillows, duffel bags, work gloves, & four coolers overflowing with junk food to Pittsburgh, PA for a week of community service. Despite the beauty of the area, thousands of its residents experience daily food and housing insecurity. It was our privilege to partner with local organizations committed to addressing these issues. Jack Bidigare and Kylie McClendon served at the Kneed Café, where patrons could pay for their own meal, donate towards someone else’s meal, or eat for free. Colin Burke served with the Belair Rehab Center, which provided compassionate adult care for the mentally disabled. Renata Conger and Laila Lane worked with Light of Life to provide faith-based day care for children of recovering addicts. Mia Cassar and Aleks Powers split their time between rehabbing a house with Habitat for Humanity and sorting donated items at The River’s needbased clothing closet. RJ Cassar, Adolf Lane, and Carys Rees-Baker facilitated kids’ activities with the Boys and Girls Club. Kate Pirker sorted clothes, hygiene kits, and more with World Vision (the global organization who runs the 30-Hour Famine). Whether out at our service sites, during daily worship at our host church, or shopping for even more junk food at Target, our group grew closer to one another and closer to God. First English has been so generous in supporting us both financially and spiritually. By lifting us up in prayer — that we would journey safely, have fun, work hard, and grow in relationship with our savior — you have given us a gift that will outlast this lifetime. We sincerely thank you for this experience and look forward to the next trip.

ID YOUKNOW?? Flowers may be purchased and placed on the main altar by anyone for Sunday worship services. You may honor someone's birthday or anniversary, or place them in memory of a loved one. A notice will be placed in the bulletin informing the congregation for whom the flowers are placed. Check for available dates on the sign-up sheet, located in the church office or in the Lounge on Sundays. Costs of the flowers are $19.00 per side or $38.00 for both sides, checks payable to FELC Altar Guild. Placement of flowers for the side altar is also available if the main altar is fully reserved.

“The Board of Evangelism is excited about engaging more members in our greeters ministry. So we are asking each of you to sign up for one Sunday (or more if you like) during the year to greet members before the 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services. What does this look like? You will come about 15 minutes early to greet in the gathering area those before the 9:30 service, stay for the 9:30 a.m. service, and then greet those coming for the 11:00 a.m. service. It will only take about a half hour of your time to welcome our members and visitors for one Sunday out of the year. A smile, a friendly hello, or a hand shake are the only skills required! A list of dates, starting in September, will be provided. Please include your name and a method of reaching you. If for some reason you can’t make the date you signed up for you can easily switch. Your generosity in serving is greatly appreciated.
