JACKSON

Child and grandma share a secret BY JARED FIELDS Picayune Staff

KINGSLAND — Charles Jackson grew up in the Texas high plains in small, rural towns around Lubbock.  A 10-year-old boy in 1940, Jackson hoped for a bicycle that Christmas but knew the expensive gift was probably a longshot.

INSIDE Read more Christmas memories, page 20

Marble Falls Elementary School first-grader Nick Dahl reads over his letter to Santa Claus.

“My dad kept telling me don’t count on a bicycle because they cost too much,” he said.  So he gathered catalogues to price a few bicycles and found they were about $15. Now, every year the Jackson family moved into Lubbock for a few months of the year and rented a house. “Rent was $15, so I guess that was a lot of money (for a bike),” he recalled. “I forgot all about the bicycle.” At his grandma’s one day before Christmas, he was sent to the storm cellar for a jar of peaches. Elderly, disabled to receive meals fit for Christmas BY CONNIE SWINNEY Picayune Staff

BURNET — Texas Smith knows what it’s like to do without. “There was a time I’d pray to God to take the hunger away from me,” said Smith, who is on a fixed income. “You can barely pay for your medicine. Sometimes you have to make a choice between eating and pills.” Despite her own health issues and budget limitations, the Burnet resident launched Flowing Waters Ministries in October to help her elderly and disabled neighbors by delivering donated food to them. Smith carts 128 grocery bag deliveries every Friday to Hamilton Creek Manor and League Street Manor, income-based apartment complexes in Burnet. She also offers pickup of non-perishable food items 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the League Street Manor Community Center, 1008 E. League St., on the first and third Friday of each month. Smith buys and collects food items with donations from individuals and one local business. “Some people aren’t physically able to get out and work,” said Ronda Heffington of Ronda’s EZ Bail Bonds, who recently donated funds for Christmas meals. “They don’t get to do all the things we get to do like have Christmas presents and Christmas dinner. … They just survive.” Heffington believes the deliveries to homebound residents supplements other local programs. “Burnet County has always been a giving community,” Heffington said. “I’m hoping this will inspire some businesses to see that the need is real.” Smith’s holiday goal involves buying and cooking Cornish game hens for clients and delivering them this Friday with their usual bags of food. Smith said she wants to prepare as many as she can for pre-Christmas delivery. “I have this heart for the elderly people,” she said. “I just want to make sure they don’t go without if they don’t have to.” For more, call (307) 250-4326. connie@thepicayune.com

Rosie is such a special girl that we just can’t figure out why she hasn’t found her forever home yet. She’s two years old and has lived almost her entire life at our shelter. She looks like a Dalmatian mix, and though it’s hard to tell from her photo, she’s built like a slender Labrador. “She said ‘Charles, can you go to the cellar and get a jar of peaches?’” “Yes ma’am.” So he went to the cellar and “oh my God there was a bicycle sitting there. A boy’s bicycle. It was painted red and had leather seats. God I’m not supposed to see this.” He grabbed the peaches and ran back to his grandma’s house.  “It dawned on her that she had made a mistake of letting me see the bicycle,” he said. “We made a pact that we would not reveal our secret, and we didn’t.” Sure enough, a bicycle was under the family tree that Christmas.  It served him well living in Levelland and when the family moved to Lubbock. He rode the bike well into his junior year of high school when the family moved to Plains. “In my senior year I guess I got to thinking I was too old to ride a bicycle to school, so I walked,” he said. “It wasn’t but about a mile.” After graduation, Jackson was at a gas station and talking with a guy a grade below him. “He said, ‘what do you think for that bicycle?’”

“I said “ahh, I’ve had it too long I don’t know.” The guy asked if he’d take $15 for it. “I was 10 years old and had a great Christmas and had a great bicycle for a long time,” Jackson said.  Jackson said yes without hesitation.

MCLEAN

Bandits take tree, but can’t steal the McLeans’ Christmas BY JENNIFER FIERRO Picayune Staff

MARBLE FALLS — One of long-time resident Gladys McLean’s Christmas memories is one most would probably rather forget. It happened in the late 1970s after McLean, who grew up in the Cypress Mill area between Marble Falls and Johnson City, became a wife and

mother. She and her husband, former Burnet County Judge Martin McLean, bought a Christmas tree from a local store but left it in the carport so they could create a spot in the living room for it. After the rearranging, the two went to the car port to get the tree but instead went back inside empty handed. “Somebody stole our tree,” she said with chuckle. So they returned to the local store to buy a replacement and discovered only a lone small tree remained. “It looked like a Peanuts tree,” she said referring to the It’s Christmas Charlie Brown cartoon. “It was a scrawny tree we put in front of the window.” Though the meaning of the holiday hasn’t changed for McLean, she said the anticipation today is different. That’s because children today simply get more presents throughout the year than she did as a child. So Christmas isn’t the only time kids get gifts these days, McLean pointed out, taking away some of the excitement. “I got a little bracelet one year that was sort of a surprise,” she said. “I didn’t get a ton of things for my birthday. I remember having one birthday party. At Christmas you got two or three things, sometimes four. You got a new pair of shoes, two or three toys, something to wear.”

BERTRAM — A simple knock on the window on Christmas Eve meant Santa Claus was on the property for Sharon Schwartz, her sister Carla Denison, and their cousins. Christmas Eve as a child was always spent at the home of Oma Goodwin, their grandmother, Schwartz said. Little did the children know the knock came from their grandmother. But that became clear on Christmas Eve 1964 when Goodwin rounded the house to go back inside and fell, breaking her wrist. “Of course when she came back in holding her wrist in such pain, we knew it wasn’t Santa outside the window,” Schwartz said. “After that, my dad and uncles had to take her to the emergency room in Lampasas.” With their absence, the Christmas festivities were put on hold until the injured and her party returned. “I opened up one present and got a pair of house shoes,” Schwartz said with a smile. “Our grandmother was the least of our concerns. I don’t think, however, that was the time I stopped believing in Santa. Heck, I still believe.” Growing up, Schwartz and Denison used to help their parents pick out and cut a Christmas tree. One of the fads was to flock the tree. Flocking is artificial snow that required mixing water and using a vacuum. The first time the tree was flocked was when the family set it up in the living room, Schwartz said. “Because the picture on the box of flocking showed a lady all dressed up and flocking her tree on the inside of the house,” she said. “It turned out to be a disaster.” That’s because the hose on the vacuum came loose, spreading flock all over the room and making her dad unhappy. Neither mother nor daughter recall how they cleaned the room. “We flocked the tree out in the garage each year after that catastrophe,” Schwartz said with a laugh. “That was fun. Nine times out of 10, (the hose) would break off. It always got loose. We always had a flocked tree.”
