Campers and hikers in Highland Lakes brave cold for outdoors adventures BY CONNIE SWINNEY Picayune Staff

BURNET — Camping on a brisk day in January might provide an exhilarating escape for some but could pose a few challenges for others who are not prepared for frigid temperatures. Inks Lake State Park host Craig Davidson explained how some guests leave the park on a hasty and frostbitten note when they hadn’t planned on cold-weather camping. “They’ll get up on a Sunday. It’s soggy, wet and cold. They pack their stuff up and say, ‘The heck with it’ and leave,” he said.  “People will literally throw away a brand-new tent. We call it ‘free-tent Sunday.’” The park, located west of Burnet off Texas 29 and Park Road 4, typically experiences its highest volume of campers in spring and fall with mild temperatures in the 70s and 80s during the day and nighttime lows in the 50s and 60s. Youngsters in Burnet and Llano counties round up their best for annual livestock shows BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

TOBYVILLE — As Kevin and Jared Reed made rounds with their show hogs in a pen behind their family’s home, the discussion turned to why they became involved in the Burnet County Livestock Show. “It’s our (grandfather’s) fault,” Kevin said with a laugh. He and his brother Jared have spent more than an hour every day feeding, working and grooming the hogs since the animals arrived in September.

“Usually, we don’t get them until later, but Grandpa couldn’t keep them any longer,” Jared said. “But we’ve been doing this for a while, so we kind of knew what we were doing.” The two Reeds are among the several hundred area youth preparing for the Burnet and Llano counties livestock shows Thursday through Saturday. The 46th annual Burnet County Livestock Show takes place at the Burnet County Fairgrounds, 1310 Houston Clinton Drive in Burnet. The Llano Livestock Show & Art, Craft and Food Shows is at the Llano County

Community Center, west of Llano on FM 152 in Robinson Park. For the Reeds, raising and showing hogs at the livestock show is a family tradition. Both boys first started showing in third grade, which makes this Kevin’s ninth year and Jared’s sixth year. Kevin is a senior at Marble Falls High School, while Jared is a freshman. Their older brother, Derek Reed, showed hogs through his senior year at high school. Hogs are only one of the animals See SPECTATORS / Page 3

STAFF PHOTO BY CONNIE SWINNEY TIPS TO KEEP WINTER CAMPERS AND HIKERS WARM n Wear warm clothing you can layer (fleece, flannel and wool fabrics); avoid cotton on cold and damp days. n Think “heads, hands and feet” with hats, gloves and warm socks. n Prepare a camp fire in a fire pit or grill (keep wood stored in dry location). n Invest in a propane heater (tent and RV campers alike). n Bring along a well-insulated sleeping bag and extra blankets.

Migrating ducks and other birds stop at Inks Lake State Park during winter FROM PAGE 1 However, many campers brave the frigid air despite winter average lows of 33 degrees, Davidson said. “Winter surprises you around here,” he said. “It can be kind of cold and nasty, then the sun can come out, and you’ll have spring-

like weather overnight. “I’m amazed at the tenacity of some of the campers out here.” Satisfying a sense of adventure continues to be the biggest attraction for visitors no matter the time of year. “It’s a good place,” said Taylor Anderson, a hiker who joined her family Jan. 1 for the Inks Lake State Park First Day Hike Rock On. “You

can explore and see all these different things that you never knew could be here.”  Park features include wildlife such as migrating ducks, pelicans, gulls and loons as well as stable lake levels and natural habitats. “We’ve got hosts that come down here from the winter in North Dakota, from Michigan, Minnesota,”

Davidson said. “The daily conversation is, ‘It’s cold, but it’s not 3 (degrees) below (zero) and there’s not three feet of snow.’” For more information about park

Spectators encouraged to attend sales during shows FROM PAGE 1 youth will be showing at the two county shows. Other animals include poultry, cattle, sheep, goats, Angora goats and rabbits. Both shows include creative meats and bake competitions. The Reeds get their hogs from their grandfather, a retired high school agriculture science teacher, who raises the animals on his farm in the Seguin area. “This is his way of helping us pay for college,” Kevin said. While there is a cost to keeping and raising a show animal, the youth hope they make that money back and then some during the livestock show sales. During the sale, people bid on the youths’ projects with the highest bidder “buying” the animal. “Well, they don’t get to keep it at the county show,” Kevin said. The two county shows aren’t “terminal” sales, so the youngster actually retains the animal. This allows the child to continue showing the project at larger shows, if possible, and make some cash he or she can stash away for college. But livestock shows are more than about earning money for college or next year’s project. “You learn a lot about managing your time,” Kevin said. “We spend an hour or more a day exercising (the hogs) and feeding them. And you have to do it every day.” It’s not the only thing the two Reeds are involved in. They are in school. They played football. They have friends. All of those compete for their time as well as the livestock. There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with taking on a livestock project, Jared said. “But it’s a lot of fun,” he said. The county shows are just the start of the season for some youth.

Two of the largest competitions are the Houston and San Antonio livestock shows. “Those are a lot more competitive,” Kevin said. The Reeds will show hogs in those shows as well. “It really is fun though,” Kevin said. The public is welcome during the shows. Officials said one of the best times to come is during the sales. They also encourage businesses and individuals to consider bidding on the projects to help support the youth. The Burnet County Livestock Show sale is 1 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds. The Llano County show sale is 6 p.m. Saturday at Oestreich’s Rose, 106 E. Hamilton in Llano. And the Reed boys wouldn’t mind if you went a bit hog wild during the sales. For more information on the Burnet County show, call the Burnet County AgriLIFE Extension Office at (512) 756-5463. For more information on the Llano County event, call the Llano County AgriLIFE Exention Office at (325) 247-5159. daniel@thepicayune.com ARE YOU BETWEEN THE AGES OF 50-64 AND NO LONGER ABLE TO WORK BECAUSE OF A PHYSICAL OR MENTAL CONDITION? MARBLE FALLS — When Shirley Shaw began researching her family tree, she never imagined the branches would lead her to colonial Maryland. “I was able to trace my family from my maiden name back to 1696 in Maryland,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it. You never know where (researching your family history) will take you.” Shaw, a member of the Kingsland/ Highland Lakes Genealogical Society, began researching her family to learn something about her history with the idea of someday publishing a book about it. Taking the trip into the past in search of family history can seem a bit daunting, which is why the local genealogical society is hosting a workshop Wednesday, Jan. 9, through Friday, Jan. 11, at Texas Tech University at the Highland Lakes, 806 Steve Hawkins Parkway. The class begins at 9 a.m each day and is being held in the second-floor computer laboratory. The three-day workshop isn’t simply one where people listen as a person stands at the front of the room and goes over the various techniques and computer programs used in family history searches. It’s a hands-on learning experience. “They’ll get online and we’ll walk them through some software and search techniques,” Shaw said. The Kingsland/Highland Lakes Genealogical Association meets the the second Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. at the Kingsland branch of the Llano County Public Library, 125 W. Polk in Kingsland. For more, call Shaw at (830) 3857070. To read more about the seminar and Shaw’s experiences, go to www. DailyTrib.com.

Acetaminophen might increase risk of asthma PHARMACY NEWS BY KEVIN ATKINS Acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, is one of the most commonly used medications around the world because it is considered effective for fever and pain and also is relatively safe at recommended doses. However, studies in children and adults have indicated that acetaminophen might increase the risk of asthma and wheezing breath. Research in younger children found treatment with acetaminophen during the first year of life increased the risk for asthma symptoms by 46 percent. Moreover, the more acetaminophen that was taken, the greater the risk of asthma symptoms. Acetaminophen use also has been associated with higher risks for atopic disease, such as eczema and rhinoconjunctivitis (symptoms of allergy associated with the nose and eyes). A recent review suggests acetaminophen should be avoided in children with asthma or who are at high risk for asthma and that Ibuprofen seems to be a safer choice to treat fever and pain among these children. Check with a pediatrician for specific recommendations for your child. Atkins received a pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984. Since 1994 he has owned and operated Atkins Pharmacy Services, 701 Third St. in Marble Falls. A second pharmacy is at 2607 U.S. 281 North. He can be reached at (830) 693-2972 or visit the website at www.atkinspharmacy. com.

Club members range in experience from couples who have travelled the world and danced for decades to beginners. A few might dress up, but most wear jeans and a long-sleeved shirt. “For us, it’s good fellowship with people,” Broadway said. “We like to have fun, and you don’t have to really know how to dance, like ballroom dancing. MARBLE FALLS — The first Christmas Caddy Golf Tournament had a goal to raise a total of $6,000 for 12 families during the holiday season. But the event missed it — in a good way. The collaboration between area churches and businesses instead raised more than $10,200 for 15 families and 60 children. The money was used to purchase clothing, food and Christmas presents. “I really think it was a success on a more important note: the community coming together and believing in an event that had no prior clout,” said organizer Stephen Galan, associate minister at Lake Shores Church in Marble Falls. “People took a risk of giving to this event this year not knowing its track record, and it was great seeing the whole com-

munity coming together to trust in this.” The Dec. 1 tournament at Hidden Falls Golf Club in Meadowlakes had 27 businesses help sponsor the event and a nearly maxed-out field of 110 golfers, Galan said. With a successful tournament after less than a year’s worth of planning, Galan said he hopes the tournament can grow in popularity and become its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2013. For that to happen, though, Galan said sponsors and volunteers will be needed. “What makes this (tournament) unique and what contributes to its success is that it’s a bunch of people teaming together to say ‘don’t help me, help our fellow neighbor,’” Galan said. For more on the tournament or ways to be involved, call Galan at Lake Shores Church, (512) 695-5998. jared@thepicayune.com

PICAYUNE CONTEST

WHERE IN THE HIGHLAND LAKES?

Sessions to give small businesses competitive edge BY CONNIE SWINNEY Picayune Staff

MARBLE FALLS — Growing a small business takes both dollars and “sense,” local business leaders say. “It’s competitive. It’s a wonderful environment, but it has lots of challenges. A mom-and-pop can’t do it all,” said Bill Rives, executive director of the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce. “But you have to have a good staff.” To help local merchants utilize good sense about staff and day-today operations, the chamber is hosting a series of monthly information sessions, called Lunch and Learns, which start Wednesday, Jan. 9.

Topics include fraud protection, business taxes, computer security, launching a business, social media and employee relations. “With the retailers I work with, they’ve got great products, a great work ethic,” Rives said. “They would love to have more customers and have the chance to expand.” The sessions, which are open to the public, are the second Wednesday of the month at the chamber of commerce office, 916 Second St. “A lot of the ways to be successful is by doing a lot of little things well,” Rives said. “As our businesses expand, as our customer base expands, as people get to know Marble Falls,

SMITHWICK — The Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department added a new truck to its arsenal that should give Smithwick residents a bit more comfort. “This truck gives us several advantages,” MFAVFD President Michael Phillips said. “It’s a new truck with a turbo charger, so, right there, it helps with our response time. Plus, it holds more water than the current one in Smithwick, so it can stay in firefighting mode longer.” The truck, a 2012 Ford F550 complete with turbo charger and red cab, is one of the first purchases by the Burnet County Emergency Services District No. 6, which came on-line a little more than a year ago. levies a property tax on residents within the district to support firefighting. Phillips said the truck costs about $85,000. “(The MFAVFD) gave the ESD $20,000, and they came up with the other $65,000 to buy this truck,” he said. Dave Kithil, an ESD No. 6 board member and resident, said the decision to purchase the new truck was both prudent and necessary. “The Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department has been operating on a shoestring budget for years,” Kithil said. “They’ve barely been able to keep up with the maintenance of their equipment, let alone have the money to buy new equipment and trucks.” Voters approved the ESD in 2011. The board can levy a tax rate up to 10 cents per $100 valuation on property. Kithil said the board is very aware of balancing the needs of the fire department with property owner taxes. But, he said, there is definitely a need for upgrading the MFAVFD equipment — predominately the brush trucks. “They have brush trucks that are 12, 15 and 18 years old,” he said. “Some have been repaired so many times that they are beyond further repair.” With 95 percent of the blazes the MFAVFD responds to being wildfires, Kithil said it made sense to replace a brush truck. The truck will be stationed in Smithwick, where it will replace a

1994 unit. The new vehicle carries more weight that allows fire crews to load more equipment on it. Phillips said the current truck in Smithwick is predominately a wildfire/brush unit. The new truck, he said, gives firefighters more capabilities. “This is more of a quick-attack truck,” Phillips said. “We can use this on vehicle fires or to get on scene of a structure fire and start fighting it until larger apparatus arrive.” The truck features a walk-through area between the cab and the mounted box. In case of brush or wildfires, a crew member can stand there instead of on the back or front of the truck, which many current units require. Phillips said this is a safety factor for the firefighter on the rig as well as making for better communication between the crew member and the driver. If the crew member is standing on the back of the truck, he or she can’t get the attention of the driver to direct firefighting efforts. In water capacity, the new truck has a 150-gallon edge over the older vehicle’s 250-gallon tank. “This truck with the turbo charger will make it much stronger going up the hills,” Phillips said. “So our response time will be better.” And in the case of fires and emergency calls, response time matters.
