Marble Falls couple pays off mounting debt, offers tips for others BY JENNIFER FIERRO Picayune Staff

MARBLE FALLS — Soon after getting married in April 2010, Rhett and Shelby Butler faced some obstacles that forced them to examine their financial condition. Shelby lost her job, so the couple rented out their own home, moved into a one-bedroom apartment and eventually moved in with

Shelby’s parents. “We were living paycheck to paycheck,” Rhett said. For an entire year, they did nothing but save money. The couple even sold their home. But now, the new parents of a baby boy have paid $23,500 of their debt, live in a new house and have enough money to allow Shelby to stay at home beyond her maternity leave.

AUSTIN — A new year means an intense desire by most people to be ready for bathing-suit season, which starts in about three months. And that means becoming physically fit. So we asked Olympic silver medalist and middle-distance runner Leonel Manzano to provide some tips to getting started. “Getting and being in shape is a gift you can give yourself this year,” the Marble Falls High School graduate said. “You don’t have to train

Highland Lakes churches pen letters of love, support to Newtown victims’ families BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

ROUND MOUNTAIN — When members of a Walnut United Methodist Church Bible study posed a question among themselves about how they could help families personally effected by the Dec. 14 shooting in Newtown, Conn., their answer came from the

story of Mary and Elizabeth. “We were studying the story where Mary goes to visit Elizabeth (before Jesus’ birth),” the Rev. Grady Roe said. “It took a lot of effort for Mary to make that trip, but Elizabeth was such a good friend and encourager. We wondered how we could be better encouragers like Elizabeth?” So after members of the study contemplated the question, Roe decided

to reach out to a Methodist church in Newtown, where 26 people — including 20 children — died in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. It turned out, Roe said, two of the children killed in the incident had attended that church. Roe went to his Walnut congregation and his Highland Lakes United Methodist Church congregation in Buchanan Dam with the idea of writing

notes to the families of the two children who attended the Newtown church. “I think one of the main things we wanted (the families) to know is while there are bad people in the world, there also are lots of good people,” Roe said. “We also wanted to remind them that they are not alone and there are people who they don’t even know who care about them.” During the Dec. 23 service at

Highland Lakes UMC, each bulletin contained a note for people to write encouraging and loving words on to be sent to the Newtown families. Roe told the congregation to pen the notes as they sat in the service. “I said I didn’t even care if they listened to me,” he said. “Just write the notes.” See SOME / Page 7

PHARMACY NEWS BY KEVIN ATKINS After a person has chicken pox, the varicella-zoster virus can persist in their nerves, remaining dormant until it has the opportunity to become active, such as when a person’s immune system is weakened. In this situation, shingles (herpes zoster) can result, producing a painful, sometimes itchy rash. A common complication is postherpetic neuralgia — pain that can last for months or years after the rash has disappeared. Oral antivirals (famciclovir, etc.) can help speed healing and reduce acute pain. Antivirals should be started as soon as possible, preferably within 72 hours of the appearance of the rash. Pain medications should be regularly given around the clock. Corticosteroids such as prednisone are sometimes added to antivirals in the hopes of lessening swelling around nerves and thereby decreasing nerve damage. Shingles can reoccur, and the Zostavax vaccine can reduce the risk. Ask your pharmacist about this vaccination and how compounded medications can help with postherpetic neuralgia. Atkins received a pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984. Since 1994 he has owned and operated Atkins Pharmacy Services, 701 Third St. in Marble Falls. A second pharmacy is at 2607 U.S. 281 North. He can be reached at (830) 693-2972 or visit the website at www.atkinspharmacy. com.

Some notes have been already sent

HEY READERS, We’re looking for a bluebonnet photo to go on the cover of our 2013 Spring/ Summer 101 Fun Things to Do in the Highland Lakes magazine. And we want it to come from one of you. So, look through your photos and see if you have one with family and/or friends in a field of bluebonnets. It must be a digital photo and in a vertical format. And we need a full-size resolution photo due to the magazine publication requirements. If you have any doubts, send us the photo just as it came out of the camera — don’t make any adjustments. Since this is a contest, we have a nice prize for the photographer of the winning photo — an iPod Nano. Submit photos to editor@thepicayune.com with Bluebonnet Photo Contest in the subject line. Please include your contact information.

FROM PAGE 1 The congregations have already sent some notes off to the Newtown church with more to follow. Church officials in Connecticut will pass the letters on to the two families. “I don’t even know who is going to get these notes other than these are other human beings who need our love and support,” Roe said. “People here just wanted to do something.” It all goes back to living life and loving people as Christ calls us to do, the pastor said. An example demonstrated by Mary and Elizabeth. “We’re all called to carry Christ into the world as Mary did, but also love and support those around us as Elizabeth did,” Roe said.

BURNET — When a small group of Burnet County bird watchers pick up their binoculars on Friday, they will join more than 60,000 people from the Arctic to the Andes in a 113-year-old tradition. The National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count includes a 15-mile radius from the Burnet County Courthouse, one of 2,000 counting circles around the globe. The count is the longest citizen science survey in the world. The Highland Lakes Birding and Wildflower Society will spend most of the day spotting and documenting local birds, organizer Elizabeth Knebel said. As the official compiler of the Burnet County count for the past six years, Knebel has noticed some changes in wildlife patterns. “We’ve seen trends of more bird species moving up from South Texas, like white wing doves,” she said. “We’ve also seen an increase in the number of robins earlier in the season.” Those trends are reflected in the

national numbers as well, said Delta Willis, the senior communications manager for the National Audubon Society in New York. “Audubon’s Birds and Climate Change Report shows many species are moving north on average of a mile a year,” Willis said. The report is based on the past 40 years of Christmas bird count data. The count has also spotted some good news, including the rebound of the American bald eagle. As part of a migratory flyway, Burnet County plays an important role in the count, Knebel said. To be a bird watcher on the count, all you need is the ability to spot

MARBLE FALLS — With the spirit of Christmas still lingering as a new year begins, many people’s resolutions reflect that sense of generosity. Instead of focusing inward, many want to make a resolution that benefits others such as volunteering more often. But picking the right opportunity can be difficult. As someone who works with plenty of volunteers, Highland Lakes Legacy Fund director Midge Dockery offered tips to help get started. “If someone has the free time or feels like they need to do more for the community, they need to find something they’re passionate about,” Dockery said. “Seek out the nonprofits

or services in the area where you live and where those opportunities may exist.” Whether you are creative or like organization, Dockery said you’ll find Highland Lakes groups seeking your assistance. “You may not know where to go, and one way to seek that out is to go to the local chamber of commerce or a church,” she said. The Community Resource Center in Marble Falls, located at 1016 Broadway, houses more than 20 nonprofit and government agencies focused on helping people. If you’ve found something you’re passionate about, or identified a particular organization for which you would like to volunteer, then the hard work is over. Next is to reach out to the organization. For some that’s easy. Others might be apprehensive about making that initial contact. “Go as a team versus going alone,” Dockery said. “That’s another way to get over that intimidation.” jared@thepicayune.com

How? Because the couple followed some basic financial principles they said should work for anyone, no matter the income level. Their tips include: n Write down a monthly budget and include estimated expenses from gas, groceries, utilities and entertainment. n Develop the habit of paying as much as possible with cash and avoid using debit and credit cards. n Have $1,000 in cash for emergencies. n Create a spreadsheet for buying gifts that includes each person’s name and the amount of money for each one. n Only have one credit card to use for reserving hotel rooms or rentals — but pay with cash. Rhett said writing down expenses and costs makes people account for every dollar. “I was just randomly spending,” Shelby said. “Now, we both know how much there’s to spend, so there’s no conflict.” They say their relationship is better because money is no longer an issue. “If we ever have the opportunity to pay it forward and share what this has done with others, we want to do that,” Rhett said. jfierro@thepicayune.com

like an Olympian to take care of yourself. In fact, just 30 minutes a day of some kind of movement can help you.” His recommendations include: n a cardiovascular program such as walking, running, cycling or rowing three times a week for 30 minutes each session n weight training with more repetitions and less weight 2-3 times a week n a 5-10 minute warm-up run or walk and then some level leg swings from front to back and side to side without an arch in the back n a 5-10 minute cool-down walk or jog and light and gentle stretches of various muscle groups n reducing carbohydrate intake, eating more lean protein and having smaller meals throughout the day with healthy snacks such as apples, bananas, oranges, carrots or celery n writing down goals and placing the list where it can be easily read. But above all, Manzano said to start slowly. After two weeks of running or jogging for 20 minutes three times a week, add another 10 minutes, he said. “If you start hurting, stop and walk a bit and then try again, but do not run through the pain,” he said. “Enjoy your running. Many people think that running should be painful, but this is simply not the case. Use your running time as a stress reliever, ‘me time’ or just time to get away and get healthy. The benefits of running or being active go way beyond just being healthy. You’ll feel better and look great.” jfierro@thepicayune.com

TELL ’EM YOU SAW IT IN THE PICAYUNE

2013 RESOLUTIONS Polishing work skills can make you happier on the job BY CONNIE SWINNEY Picayune Staff

MARBLE FALLS — Bill Rives knows a thing or two about getting the most out of himself and those around him in a work setting. He’s been a successful local educator, vineyard marketing and sales representative and, currently, is the executive director of the Marble Falls/ Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce. “I’ve been so blessed. I’ve had three tremendous opportunities in professions. Most people just have one,” he said. “Timing is important but be prepared. You can’t just wait for lightning to strike.” Rives is working with a number of people in the community to share ideas about positive work habits, employee relations and other workforce solutions in a series of monthly Lunch and Learn sessions in 2013. Francie Dix, president/owner of Dix Services, is one of the presenters.

For the past 30 years, she has specialized in training others in organization and communication skills as well as marketing and sales techniques. “The resolution shouldn’t be, ‘I’m going to change my career.’ The resolution should be, ‘I’m going to figure out what really would make me happy and what I can be good at,’” she said. “And if I have to polish those skills to really be good, then that’s the resolution.” Some of her tips to develop better work habits include: n avoid repeating the same actions while expecting different results n attempt to look at your own work habits with fresh eyes n re-evaluate your approach n consider the appropriate list of changes n walk out each day with one to two ideas for improvement n always show up n be prepared “You need to figure out what you

need to be happy and look for that,” Dix said. “You spend a lot of time working, you need to enjoy what you’re doing.” Rives added that if you’re still not sure what path you should consider, one simple step might “seal the deal” for a possible new career. “If you have an interest in something, start by volunteering (in that industry, occupation or profession),” said Rives, who volunteered with the chamber six years before landing his current position. “I’m thankful because that’s really why I’m here today.” For more on the free 2013 Lunch and Learn sessions, call (830) 6932815 or email info@marblefalls.org. connie@thepicayune

Listening to others is important in relationships, therapist says FROM PAGE 1 Brenda Sikkema-Sykes. “I think you need to be true to yourself and realize what you can and can’t do.” Her best advice involves understanding how others think to improve interpersonal relationships in families, the workplace and in social settings. “Be a good listener. Put yourself in that person’s shoes,” she said. “See the world from their perspective.” Sikkema-Sykes offered a few more simple steps to build more positive and mutually fulfilling interactions in 2013 and beyond.

said. “How you act in one culture may be (interpreted) differently in another.”

SEEK THE PROPER RESOURCES

“I don’t think people need to look to a book to prove they have ‘that’ problem,” she said. “Something educational, like the differences between the sexes, or anything that’s going to teach you something is good.” Finding a third-party listener

might clear up some of the confusion. “Some people may think they should only go to a therapist if they have a problem. I think that’s wrong,” Sikkema-Sykes said. “We all need someone to talk to, a neutral party who is not going to take sides, someone who has an education and has had experiences with various difficulties.” connie@thepicayune.com

UNDERSTAND GENDER DIFFERENCES

If a wife asks a husband what he’s thinking, how could the reply “nothing,” a seemingly harmless response, spiral into a two-hour inquisition about sensitivity? Because men and women see the world differently, Sikkema-Sykes explained. “It’s best to avoid interpreting the actions of the males and females in the same way. You should understand the differences between men, women, boys and girls and how they think,” she said. “Otherwise, we’re assuming that they’re doing something for the wrong reasons.”

BE MINDFUL OF BODY LANGUAGE

How you “take a stance” can fan the flames of a heated discussion between a husband and wife, a parent and a child or a supervisor and a staff member. “Maintain good eye contact. But you don’t want to stare. Staring can be thought of as glaring,” she said. “When you’re angry, don’t talk. Just be quiet and listen.” Playing the part of a sounding board can diffuse many situations. “If you listen to what they have to say, they may just be trying to work through a difficult day.” Body language rules can change with the audience. “Different groups of people have different ideas about what’s appropriate and what’s not appropriate,” she

BUSINESS

MFalls chamber hosting small business advisors BY JARED FIELDS Picayune Staff

MARBLE FALLS — If you are considering starting a business in the new year or are seeking a little advice on one you already have, the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce is offering some assistance. The chamber is hosting small business experts who can answer questions and provide direction for new and established entrepreneurs. “It’s a free, one-on-one, one-hour session,” said chamber membership coordinator Kathy Daniels. “A lot of people have questions but are apprehensive talking to someone they don’t know. Your questions could be anything from marketing to getting a loan

or developing a business plan.” Daniels said anyone interested should call the chamber at (830) 6932815 to schedule a date and time. A person from Austin SCORE talks with people considering a new business while someone with the Texas State University Small Business Development Center meets with owners of existing businesses. “There’s a continuing need. The last few months we’ve been double-booking, but a lot of these are new businesses,” Daniels said. Daniels said the sessions have gained popularity, especially for a smaller, rural city. “There are a lot of small businesses for our size of an area and community,” she said. jared@thepicayune.com

Seminar designed to help women control their estate and finances BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

MARBLE FALLS — Peyton Wolcott watched it happen several times to friends of her mother, so in the end, she decided to do something about it. “This is a way to make lemonades out of one of life’s lemons,” the Horseshoe Bay resident said. “I watched my mom’s friends — who were wives of some of Texas’ most successful businessmen — go from living comfortably to be basically poor when they became widows.

What these women went through was so preventable.” Wolcott said the problem wasn’t that their husbands didn’t adequately plan for their spouses but that the women found out the hard way not everybody who claims to “have their best interest at heart” does. “Women have to have the foresight on who to trust and how much should they give control of their finances over to others,” Wolcott said. Learning that information can be difficult. So Wolcott organized a free estate planning seminar for women

Marble Falls trainer seeking some ‘Tough Mudder’ team members BY JENNIFER FIERRO Picayune Staff

MARBLE FALLS — A sense of accomplishment. That’s how Verus Strength and Fitness owner Calvin Richard and members of his team described their experience competing in a recent Tough Mudder. Richard and about a dozen others made up the Verus team. Now he’s looking to sign up 100 team members for a Tough Mudder event April 20-21 at Longhorn River Ranch in Dripping Springs. So far 20 have agreed to be a part of the team. “I always like a good challenge,” Richard said. The Tough Mudder is an obstacle course-style race that includes features bearing names such as “Fire Walker,” “Funky Monkey,” “Aftershock Therapy” and “Devils Beard.” While it might seem a bit early to form a team since the event is still four months away, the demanding nature of the course takes a certain level of preparation. Team member Kyle Worthington said he is busy trying to recruit others to join. “I certainly will do everything that I can,” he said. “I don’t think 100 people is outside the realm of what’s possible. Having done this last one, I can say there’s something rewarding about doing it.” Richard said being part of a team is rewarding, and Worthington agreed. That’s because team members did everything together during the Oct. 6-7 Tough Mudder in Austin, Worthington said, from staying at the same campsite to eating meals together to helping each other get through each obstacle. “It was such a strong team-building experience for all of us,” he said. Worthington and Richard aren’t athletes who enjoy running long distances, so they understand the hesitation from others who share the same distain. But that’s the beauty of obstacle-course racing. The Austin race was about a mile in length but had obstacles throughout the course. The main reason more people are starting to compete in obstacle-course racing is because they want to be healthier, Worthington said. “I wasn’t sure if I could do 12 miles,” he said. “I’d never done more than a 5K. The one thing I liked was it was a challenge and not a race.” Being physically healthy is one part of life. Kathy Dimmick, who is a member of Richard’s fitness pro-

gram, competed in Tough Mudder for another reason. “I was at the point in my life I needed something to make me think there wasn’t anything I couldn’t do,” the 44-year-old mother of two said. “I was scared, but I knew if I showed up and crossed the starting line with my team, I’d cross the finish line.” Sure enough, Dimmick did just that and has the photos to prove it thanks to husband, Kurt Dimmick, and children, Grace, 9 and Ryan, 7. The trio shot more than 1,100 photos of their athlete as she encountered 15 obstacles on the course. “My kids watched me accomplish something,” she said. “You don’t have to be at your best to start that race and do that race. To finish that race, my whole perspective on my life changed. I once again believed there wasn’t anything I couldn’t accomplish.” “It turbo-charged her,” Richard said. Ultimately, those are the reasons to join the team, the three said. “They want that thrill it gives them,” Worthington said. To contact Richard, email him at versusstrengthandfitness@gmail. com. Saturday at the River City Grille, 700 First St. The event is 9-11 a.m. “It’s not about what happens to your estate after you pass, but how to manage, protect and take care of it while you’re here,” she said. “It’s really about finding a positive way to protect themselves.”

Retired and elderly women face a lot of challenges when it comes to taking care of themselves and their finances. The seminar includes attorneys, financial specialists and clergy who will explain things such as trusts, power of

attorney, testamentary capacities, wills and probate. Wolcott said attendees will learn what to be on the lookout for. “This is really about helping women stay independent,” Wolcott said. For more, call (512) 755-4173. daniel@thepicayune.com

Spicewood Labor Day 2011 fire knocked Billy Hamilton down, but not for long BY JENNIFER FIERRO Picayune Staff

SPICEWOOD — Billy Hamilton couldn’t believe the reports that the fire on Labor Day weekend 2011 burned his home to the ground.

So he waited for four anxious days before a sheriff’s deputy took him back to his recreational vehicle. The fire had laid waste to his home as well as melting many momentos he had collected from the golf courses he had worked at across the United States.

“I started crying,” he said. “You look at it and realize everything was gone. I thought, ‘What am I going to do now?’ It wasn’t the best house in the world, but it was mine.” Hamilton, a former golf course superintendent, was thankful his

favorite companion, a poodle named Blondie, was with him when the fire broke out. The two have been together for 11 years and have traveled to 33 states. Since the fire, Hamilton was able to replace his RV with help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “My back isn’t any good,” he said. “That’s the hardest part of it. I’m waiting on disability. I’m used to taking care of myself.” Until his disability benefits come through, Hamilton is living on $129 a week. Along with his back problems that came from years as working as a golf course superintendent, Hamilton suffered a heart attack several years ago which makes finding regular work difficult. Neighbors such as Jim Powell have helped him the past several months. “(Jim) stuck with me the whole time,” Hamilton said. Hamilton came to the area 33 years ago to work on Applerock and Ramrock golf courses in Horseshoe Bay. Originally, he planned to stay for six months. But Hamilton changed his mind

after falling in love with the area. He was never more thankful than when his home was gone and caring people began helping him. And if others want to help, they can call him at (512) 470-1246. “I’ve been blessed so much,” he said. “I’ve been overwhelmed. It was so humbling. I didn’t realize there were so many good people, most of them in this part of Texas.” jfierro@thepicayune.com
