The Chester City walls are a system of largely intact defensive walls surrounding the strategically important English City of Chester. The city has been defended with walls since the foundation of the Deva Victrix fort in 79 A.D. The walls are mainly Medieval and Victorian although the earliest surviving sections date to as early as 120 A.D, the most recent section was constructed as recently as 1966. The walls are Grade I listed and are the most complete city walls in Great Britain. Whilst walking along the Walls look out for Chester Cathedral, Chester Castle, the River Dee and the Eastgate Clock renowned as the second most photographed clock in the UK after Big Ben. Chester also benefits from connection to the vast canal networks to North Wales, the North West and Shropshire Union. In the heart of the city centre are the 13th century rows, a two level shopping thoroughfare where you might if you’re lucky hear the town crier. Venture slightly further afield and be prepared to shop ‘til you drop at Cheshire Oaks Designer outlet only a short bus ride away.
