THERE ARE REFITS AND THERE ARE FEADSHIP REFITS…

Feadship has launched well over 250 superyachts during its long and distinguished history. The vast majority are still sailing today due to their unrivalled build quality and the love and care with which they have been maintained by their owners. At Feadship we remain equally proud of our offspring and committed to supporting those who choose to keep their yachts in top condition. This is why Feadship only provides refit services to Feadship owners. We know these yachts like nobody else. And we know - again, like nobody else – how to ensure the original superior quality levels are retained. Maintaining the Feadship pedigree - its DNA if you like - is also very important to us. Any other refit simply won’t do…

Feadship has always had an excellent reputation for after-sales, and over the decades we have carried out various major refit and maintenance projects on our fleet. This was the background to our decision in 2005 to structurally support refits by forming a dedicated Feadship Refits team. Today we provide extensive refits and rebuilds both in Holland and abroad. Projects cover the entire gamut of refit work, from guest area redecorations, technical upgrades and Class surveys to comprehensive rebuilds that include a hull and superstructure extension. The success of the Feadship Refits philosophy is not only due to the perfect craftsmanship and rich experience on offer at our yards, or the detailed records we keep on every Feadship. It can also be attributed to the enthusiasm of captains and senior crew for the time they spend living in Holland. A refit is a serious undertaking but we are proud to say that our guests - including those owners who choose to become actively involved in the project – also enjoy their time with us.

Pre-purchasing and Refit Surveys

The term refit covers a wide range of activities to improve the status of a yacht in terms

of aesthetics, personal taste, user-friendliness, maintenance and repair, safety and

other important aspects for owner and crew. As the ultimate after sales service, we

Refits and rebuilds at the Feadship yards

present a complete pallet of custom refit activities to help (future) Feadship owners plan,

implement and enjoy these improvements: pre-purchasing and refit surveys, feasibility studies, making lists, refits and rebuilds at the Feadship yards and remote refit at partner maintenance yards.

PRE-PURCHASING AND REFIT SURVEYS

Feasibility studies

In the light of the way superyachts are used for both personal cruises and chartering,

Making lists

refits are important milestones that need careful planning and budgeting. To provide

Refits and rebuilds at the Feadship yards

owners with key information before they decide on whether to purchase a pre-owned

Remote refit at partner maintenance yards

yacht, Feadship can carry out a pre-purchasing survey to examine aspects such as the paint system, teak decking, interior and yacht hardware. Together with a report from a certified marine surveyor, this provides a reliable picture on the yacht’s status. The next step in a yacht acquisition process could be planning a refit to personalise the vessel or add features that are important for a particular owner. A dedicated survey looking at the refit possibilities can be combined with a pre-purchase survey to complete the picture on which to base a purchase decision. We can perform a refit survey on any Feadship yacht whether it is on the market or owned by people considering upgrading their yacht with the latest features. After all, Feadship constantly sets the standard in the superyacht industry and staying up to speed always pays dividends in the long run.

necessary to gain a complete picture of the work involved and the feasibility of designcritical refit items. Feadship can carry out such feasibility studies. A large structural refit, for instance, requires a reliable perception of the stability status of the yacht and some number crunching related to constructional strength. As our naval architects have full access to the design and engineering information of every Feadship yacht, they are key people in this process. Together with the knowledge of the Feadship Refits team they can determine whether and how, for example, a large pool might be accommodated on the sundeck.

MAKING LISTS

Feasibility studies

Captains are skippers, not bookkeepers, and should not be bothered by preparing

large spreadsheets on the scope of work. Feadship will visit the yacht, interview all

Refits and rebuilds at the Feadship yards

department heads and prepare a list of works required within the standard Feadship

Remote refit at partner maintenance yards

format. This list serves as the basis for further specification of the scope of work in order for the owner and captain to make a decision and allow the refit yard to prepare a quotation. It is a good idea to combine this with a survey visit to the yacht.

Feasibility studies

Depending on the scope of the refit and availability of the yacht, Feadship prefers to

Making lists

perform refits at one of our yards in Holland. The Makkum yard has a dedicated refit

team on site, while refits can also be performed at the Aalsmeer and De Kaag locations.

Remote refit at partner maintenance yards

The decision is always taken in consultation between the owner and Feadship. For refits at our own locations we prefer to work at fixed prices for each refit item and our yard fees include almost all regular services such as transportation, cleaning and garbage collection, and crane use. This prevents unpleasant surprises that create frustration and have consequences for the yard schedule. We are also committed to ensuring owners are not confronted with unexpected costs. Added value of a Feadship refit that maintains the yacht’s pedigree easily covers the cost of travel and the somewhat higher labour rates in Northern Europe. The fact that various projects have received ‘Best Refit Awards’ from the leading yacht magazines reinforces this point.

Making lists

We have agreements in place to work at and in cooperation with some of the world’s

Refits and rebuilds at the Feadship yards

most reliable maintenance yards. This ‘remote refit service’ is available at three levels of

Remote refit at partner maintenance yards

involvement: •

Turnkey: Feadship arranges every aspect of the refit.

Design and engineering, material supply, specialist workforce and site supervision. In this case the owner hires the yard management and regular workforce locally.

Design, advice and supervision: As long as our supervisors are satisfied that a remote refit has been completed to our standards, a Feadship Quality Compliance Statement will be issued to confirm that the yachts maintains the Feadship pedigree status.

HULL AND SUPERSTRUCTURE EXTENSIONS AND REMODELLING

After some years of use or after having recently bought a pre-owned yacht you may feel the need for more space. Whether it is outside or in, this can be obtained by extending the hull and/or superstructure. Due to the shape of a yacht, extensions can only be done at the stern and must be quite significant in order to justify the cost per added metre/foot. A hull extension could, for instance, transform a small lazarette into a luxury beach club, or change a balcony-type swim platform into a sculpted transom with chic double stairs landing on an integrated platform. The other side of the coin is that extending the hull often requires an adaptation of the superstructure in order to retain the flow and balance of the profile. Extended superstructure decks can in turn generate space for exterior entertainment, such as a party deck with a bar or an overflow pool. Older boats usually have limited size bridge deck lounges and a superstructure extension will add some serious real estate and value to the vessel. An important aspect of a structural refit or extension is the yacht’s stability and strength. Feadship always works within Class and Flag state requirements, monitored and controlled by our expert naval architects. They know best how structural changes can be made to one of our creations, which is another reason why Feadship is by far the best place to come when embarking on an extension.

However well preserved, yacht interiors always need to be updated or refreshed after a

time. Other reasons for a refit include changing tastes or a different family configuration.

System updates

The combination of our in-house expertise and excellent contacts with renowned interior

Exterior re-conditioning

designers will ensure the best possible new interior concept. Depending on the scope of work Feadship will handle the interior rebuild by its own carpentry department and when necessary will sub-contract the work to the very best companies working in the Dutch yacht building tradition. For instance Feadship’s refit team can do the implementation of an elevator while the yacht is going through a maintenance period in one of the Mediterranean maintenance yards.

TECHNICAL REFITS AND MAINTENANCE

Interior rebuild and redecoration

The beating heart of each yacht is in the engine room and technical spaces. Feadship

Technical refits and maintenance

is renowned for our engineering in these areas and the ‘behind the panels’ build quality.

System updates

It is vital that the engine room, technical spaces and machinery are well looked after in

Exterior re-conditioning

order to ensure the yacht’s reliability and value. While day-to-day activities are in good hands with the crew, the Class-required surveys and more long-term wear & tear require regular maintenance, repair and replacement of machinery and equipment. This work normally carried out at a dedicated maintenance yard. A major engine room refit is necessary every five to ten years and could be combined with a Class Survey. The scope of these large refits is such that it makes excellent sense to bring the yacht back to its birthplace. Only at one of the Feadship yards will you obtain the same quality as when the yacht was delivered. Obviously a technical refit can be combined with any other work on the yacht, making the trip to Holland even more worthwhile.

EXTERIOR RE-CONDITIONING

Interior rebuild and redecoration

We all know that the sea is a harsh environment and despite the best efforts of crew

members, all super yachts have to be repainted every couple of years. The teak decks

and exterior hardware also require professional attention to maintain their luxury feel,
