Queensland Ballet’s Swan Lake WED 4 JULY 7.30PM

Young maiden Odette and her friends are victims of a terrible spell that turns them into swans by day, and only at night do they return to human form. To break the spell, the beautiful Odette must find eternal love. After celebrating his birthday, Prince Siegfried comes across a lake where, at midnight, Odette transforms from a swan into a beautiful woman. Siegfried falls in love instantly but is tricked and betrayed by the seductive Black Swan, Odile. True love prevails in this powerful story set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious score. Ben Stevenson’s Swan Lake was a sell-out sensation in Brisbane — now this spectacular ballet tours to five major centres in regional Queensland including the Brolga Theatre. Queensland Ballet is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

ARTIST PROFILE: JOYCE BOTT Every morning I take my husband into town for donuts and coffee and while we sit in the café, I sketch the people around me. I am fascinated by people in all their wonderful shapes and sizes. My sketch book is quite full after 50 years as an artist!”

I have always created and decided to really peruse art in the 1970's. I love to create using paint, scratch board and ceramics. We have lived in many places over the years and been inspired by the landscapes and homes we have lived in. Quite often a special piece of furniture will turn up in a painting and animals that we have given a home to regularly make an appearance. One of my proudest achievements is winning the open section in the Maryborough Art Society Competition in 2000. To me living a creative life where art fills my days continues to be an incredibly rewarding way of life. The Fraser Coast provides so much inspiration and support for artists.

See Joyce’s exhibition ‘Places and People' at Gatakers Artspace opening Friday 4th May.

PERFORMER PROFILE: DARRYL AND THE DEVIL The 'Darryl and the Devil' live show is a must see to anyone who appreciates the blues folk tradition. Growing up in Rockingham WA and working as a carpenter and horticulturist, playing the blues as a living was all a dream. He played support slots for his friend's bands and open mics, traveling and song writing in his spare time. But in 2015 he quit his job and started a journey hitting the road. Developing a reputation as a talented performer and songwriter, Darryl is now doing over a 100 shows a year and has played his own music all over Australia and live radio. He opened the Blues and Roots stage at the Gympie Muster music festival In 2016. He recently released his debut album, Homeless Bound at Pacific International with Robert Mackay and is currently booking a tour from Queensland to Western Australia. “It’s great to have so much support from local venues for blues and alternate music."

The Fraser Coast is really starting to get on board with local music and there’s great community of local artists that support each other”

Maryborough Military & Colonial Museum Nestled in the heart of Maryborough’s historic Wharf Street precinct lays one of the country’s hidden military treasures. The highly regarded Victorian Cross medal was awarded to Lieutenant Herbert James, 4th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment for gallantry at Gully Ravine, Cape Helles, Gallipoli on June 28 and July 3, 1915. This medal is one of only 39 VCs awarded from the Gallipoli campaign. It is the only one in Australia to be housed outside the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. With more than 7000 items on display including tanks, guns and uniforms there is plenty of interesting and quirky memorabilia for everyone to enjoy.
