Transforming building from the Sky Games Headquarters to the Romanic art Restoration School 2 programs 2 times 2 constructive systems

Model 0 - s 1:250 Conceptual

The building is the Logistic and Press Center of the Sky Games - Olympic Games taking place every four years in different mountain locations around Europe - provided with offices, conference rooms and sporting centers. In 2012 The Sky Games took place in the Ribagorza area, the northern Catalan region (Spain). The useful life of the building is 6 months, i.e. the life span of the Olympic Games. In line with the current trend of designing dismountable structures for buildings with short-term useful life - as in the case of Olympic games facilities - the project envisages that 60% of the building is dismounted and eliminated once the Games are over, while the remaining 40% changes its destination use. In this second phase, the building, with a volume reduction of 60%, becomes a Research Center XXX The Vall the Boí economy is mainly based on tourism from a twofold source, on one hand winter sporting activities, on the other hand cultural activities due to the rich Romanic heritage of the area. In 2010, UNESCO nominated the nine Romanic churches of the Vall the Boí human heritage, recognising to a broader extent their historical and architectural value. Hence, a highly specialised Catalan Romanic Research Center, would contribute to develop the economic and cultural enrichment of the local heritage.

Topographic - tectonic system It defines the new topography of the area. It is the main axis of the permanent building. It is the SKY GAMES HEADQUARTERS during the event and afterwards it will become into the ROMANIC ART CONSERVATION AND RESOORATION SCHOOL.

Metallic dismountable structure

Constructive system

Floating - ephemeral system It is completely dismountable thanks to its structural system and its dry construction. It appears as an addition, a parasite of the permanent building. It is the SKY GAMES HEADQUARTERS during the event.

Southside Village scale The basement stands out from the access level, while the rest of the it is partially buried. This allows to maintain a narrow scale building facing the Romanic Church and not to cover the view. From this side we don’t perceive the ephemeral metallic part, a hidden world to be discovered when accessing in the building.

North side Infrastructure scale This view shows how the big scale of the infrastructure is fragmented in different levels of deepness of the facade. The dIsmontable part is clearly pulled up from the floor and shows a different materiality.

There is a double circulation system in the building: 1. The public circulation system 2. The private circulation system Both of them are placed into the Apses: two autonomous volumes designed as a space of circulation and discover of the building. 1. Apse 2: Basement Floor

The two stairs systems: Inside the Apses are placed two flights of stairs that that never cross. This allows the users to have a private circulation and the visitors to enter and visit the building without interferring with the private users.
