“The day the Lord created hope was probably the same day he created Spring.” ― Bernard Williams March 20th is officially the first day of spring, a day marked by the vernal equinox. The vernal equinox (or spring equinox/march equinox) is the day when the sun passes directly over the equator as the earth’s axis begins to point back towards the sun on its way around the star. Some describe this as the sun “heading north” across the equator, bringing the warmer weather of spring and summer with it. Truthfully, I can understand how the celebrations of the vernal equinox eventually blended with the celebration of Christ’s resurrection: after all, they both signal hope, warmth after the long, dark winter. This month, we will enter those last, dark days of winter knowing that spring is indeed coming. We will enter those last, symbolic days of Lent knowing full well that after the betrayal of Maundy Thursday, the darkness of Good Friday, the silence of Holy Saturday, hope breaks free form the grave that sought to hold it on Resurrection Sunday. This month, we celebrate the arrival of spring, but most importantly, we celebrate the fulfilment of hope. As we wait for Resurrection Sunday (April 1st), we will prepare our hearts and minds as we mark the days of Holy Week (the week beginning the Sunday before East, Palm/Passion Sunday). Each year, we publish a Holy Week Devotional, written by members of our congregation. I encourage you to pick one up and use it in your prayer time during Holy Week. Let the insight and reflections of our own sisters and brothers speak to you as you prepare to celebrate Christ’s resurrection. We also mark the events of Holy Week with special services and events during the week. . On Wednesday, March 28th, our children’s ministry will host a glow-in-the-dark Easter egg hunt. On Thursday, March 29th at 6:00 P.M. in the sanctuary, we will have our Maundy Thursday Feet-Washing & Communion Service. On Friday, March 30th at 6:00 P.M. we will hold our annual service of Tenebrae (A Service of Shadows). Then, on Sunday, April 1st we will gather in the cemetery for our Easter Sunrise Service at 6:30 A.M.; a light breakfast of fruit, pastries, juice, and coffee will be served in the CMC afterwards. We will not meet for Sunday school, but we will gather again for a special service of worship at 10:00 A.M. in the sanctuary. As the sun moves closer to equator, we move closer to the empty tomb. I pray that in the days ahead, you will make time to respond in gratitude to what Christ’s resurrection means for you—for us all. I pray you will make time to share that hope that comes with Easter morning with others. Most of all, friends, I pray that the reality of Christ’s resurrection, the power of God’s love made manifest in the resurrected Jesus, will transform you more and more into the likeness of Christ with each passing day. Grace and Peace, Chris
