“…And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” ― Jesus, Matthew 6:12 By the time you read this, we will have made our final payment on the debt we’ve held for twelve years. That is something to celebrate (and we will formally at our annual Homecoming celebration on November 5th). The faithfulness of this congregation to see such a commitment through to the end is to be commended. With the full payment of our debt, we are open to new possibilities, new dreams for the future. I, however, want to use this space to share with you some words about our past and (more importantly) our present. In recent years our annual tithes and offerings have consistently totaled between $288-297,000. This consistent giving is most often a good thing. However, in recent years we have seen our expenses increase. There are a number of reasons why. First, things generally cost more with the passage of time. Taxes, insurance premium, utilities, registrations, and fees are rarely (if ever) reduced from year to year; they almost always go up! Therefore, many of our expenses have gone up in recent years. A second reason for the increase in our expenses is our commitment to fill needed roles in our ministerial staff. As we have adjusted our staff to meet our ministerial needs, our financial obligations have increased. While we are still in an interim season with our music ministry and youth ministry, we don’t necessarily see those financial obligations changing. A third and most important reason our expenses have increased is that we are quite frankly doing more ministry than ever before. Our budget is first and foremost a financial commitment to the mission and ministry of our church. This means that our budget is our financial pledge to the kingdom work in and around our community and around the world. Our budget (which remember, is funded by your undesignated tithes and offerings) is the commitment we make to missionaries, mission organizations, ministries within our church, and other events and programs we host and facilitate throughout the year. We are doing more ministry than ever, and that too is something worth celebrating. With these increases in activity and ministry, come the need for us to take a faithful step forward with our giving. For example, last year (2016) our total undesignated giving (i.e. tithes & offerings) was $288,755.41, while our operating expenses totaled $315,808.97. That’s a negative difference of $27,053.56, all of which came from our operating reserves. It is important to point out that we also received somewhere in the ballpark of $35,000 in designated gifts and $55,000 in designated building pledges. What all of this means is that we have to begin praying about how we will continue to support the ministry of our church TODAY as we dream about the future. It means we need to understand that we should not be so quick to designate our gifts so that they may be used to meet our budgeted mission and ministry commitments. It means we must be mindful of our ministry goals and what each of us is doing individually to help us all reach those goals. So, with our debt now being cancelled, I want to challenge each of us to step up our giving. Whether you’ve never given before and start making a regular, modest contribution, or whether you regularly give from a place of comfort and need to step up to a more sacrificial amount, we can all work together to meet our financial commitments, and I want to set a goal of $315,000 for total undesignated gifts for 2017. Together, I believe we can do it. Grace and Peace, Chris
