“Financial demands, of all the rough winds that blow upon our love, (are) quite the coldest and the most biting.” -from Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary

Once the calendar has reached July, some of us may look around and wonder how we ever got here, or how we’ll ever go back to “normal.” We’ve been traveling, vacationing, going to conferences, hitting the lake, running to ball games and tournaments, working in the garden, staying out with the sun long past what seems to be a reasonable hour for daylight. The shorter days of the fall and winter seem like some old memory and the reality of a regular schedule seems to have gone by the wayside. Of course, in the midst of all of this on-the-go busy-ness there is the very real possibility that some things are overlooked, that some things make their way towards the bottom of our list of priorities. Sadly, worship and participation in the broader work of Christ’s Church are some of those things that slide down that list: some folks call it “the summer slump.” The problem with “the summer slump” is that it can to easily become reality for some. After all, if traveling, sports, vacationing, etc. keeps you away from the regular worship of God enough Sundays it can become easy to simply stay at home the following Sundays. What’s more, when we fall out of the regular discipline of gathering for worship we not only rob ourselves of the communal experience of worship, we rob others of our presences, our contribution to the life of the community of faith, and in a very real way, we hurt the congregation’s ability to do the work of God’s kingdom when our absence leads to a decrease in our giving (both personal and financial). When there are fewer people participating, fewer people giving, we may find it more difficult to meet our ministry and mission goals we have set for ourselves as a congregation. So, as we are in the “primetime” of summer, let me encourage you to make time to participate in the life of YOUR congregation, of CHRIST’s church here at Williams. Take part in weekly worship and Bible study, give of yourself so that we may reach the goals you have helped us to set, and in the midst of such a busy, fun-filled season, continue to set the worship of God and the work of God’s kingdom as your top priority. Grace and Peace, Chris
