Biblical Basis for House of Prayer Survey In the Old Testament, God had a temple for His people. 1 Kings 8:1-66 The Temple of Solomon Isaiah 56:6-7; “house of prayer” In the time of Jesus the temple was desecrated. Jesus sought to reform the temple. At the beginning of His public ministry: (John 2:13-17 Especially verse 16-17) At the conclusion of His public ministry: Mark 11:12-25 (especially verse 17; See also Matthew 21:12-17, Luke 19:46) Note the decline My Father’s house – A “house of prayer for all nations” A “house of merchandise” A “den of thieves” Luke’s Writings Gospel emphasizes the function of the temple as a house of prayer (Luke 1:8-23; 2:27-32; 18:10-14; 19:46; 24:53). The temple continues to serve this role in the book of Acts (2:46; 3:1; 21:20-26; 22:1721). Practice of prayer in the early church also signals a discontinuity with Judaism. Acts 22:17-21 (ESV) “When I had returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance …And he said to me, 'Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’” Prayer in the temple in Jerusalem resulted in a divine mandate that subverts the central role of the temple in Jewish life.

In the New Testament, God’s people are His temple. Paul: “God does not live in temples made by man” (Acts 17:24 ESV) The Temple of God is where the Holy Spirit takes up special abode 1. Each believer’s physical body (1 Cor. 6:19) 2. The local church (1 Cor. 3:16-17) 3. The Church universal (Eph. 2:21-22) Peter: Building the temple (a house of prayer) is an ongoing process (1 Pet. 2:4-5). Prayerfulness—A character quality common to all those in the Christian movement. (Acts 9:14, 21 ESV) “And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name." “And all who heard him were amazed and said, ‘Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem of those who called upon this name? And has he not come here for this purpose, to bring them bound before the chief priests?’"
