“The Chamber and CDC are the two primary, privately funded community and economic development organizations for the city. We recruit new business to the community and work to impact quality of place initiatives,” Brad says. His role ranges from fundraising to working with new companies considering a Conway location. “I also work with other community leaders on projects that will positively impact the city.” Brad has been in his CDC role for 21 years, and he added the Chamber role 14 years ago. “The Chamber has been around since 1891, and the work of the organization is truly remarkable. From raising private money to recruit our three colleges to establishing an improvement district to fund the city’s initial sewer system to rechartering First National Bank after The Great Depression, the Chamber has always worked to move the city forward,” he says. The Chamber is a federation of private businesses, some of which have been members for decades. Brad and his team work for these businesses to execute plans they establish. “There is an old saying in the Chamber world that ‘The Chamber does the things that people think just happen.’ An example is the new bridge design, brown stone with ‘Conway green’ Arkansas, along Interstate 40. Those are the result of an interstate corridor beautification study we did years ago. The same goes for the CDC. Founded in 1959, the organization holds several

Brad credits the work of community leaders and stakeholders for the success of the Chamber and CDC. “Over my 21 years, I have had the pleasure of working for dozens of community business leaders on the two boards. Each brings a particular expertise and/ or point of view to the organizations, and our team routinely relies on these volunteer leaders for guidance, direction, and technical assistance. We also have good relationships with our city government leaders, and they have pushed through progressive policies in regard to design, historic preservation, transportation, and parks. Those policies fundamentally change our city and give us a much better product to sell,” he says. Brad recognizes the positive relationship between Conway’s public and private sectors as a differentiator for our community. “I’ve also noticed Conway citizens are good at finding common ground and working from that point. Our boards of directors represent a cross-section of the busi-

ness community and a continuum of political views. Never have I seen any of them bring national political views into a meeting on local community and economic development issues. I think it may be in our DNA; this is a community that has always looked within for solutions to problems, and we depend on one another to find those solutions. Often the person you need for the solution is very different than you.” He takes pride in his skilled colleagues as well. “I work with a very talented group of people, and I would put them up against any other Chamber/ Economic Development team anywhere. We are stewards of these organizations. They predate us and will be here after we are gone. It is truly an honor to do this work.” Brad, who was “surprised and humbled” at learning of his readers’ choice win, never tires of sharing the Conway story with people in other communities or to prospects considering a Conway location. “I take a great deal of pride in telling them about this city and its ability to do big things. I think they often expect our success to be dependent on some large benefactor or federal appropriation. What they learn is something quite different; our success is the result of ambition, self-reliance, good public policy, and cooperation. I love getting to tell that story. It is the best part of my job.”

The Chamber and CDC are the two primary, “privately funded community and economic

development organizations for the city. We recruit new business to the community and work to impact quality of place initiatives.

We have been in business in Conway since the “1970s, and we love Conway. We briefly considered moving closer to Little Rock many years ago, and we made the decision that Conway was home, and this is where we belonged.

“My father had developed a deep friendship with and respect for Mr. Bud Trent. Mr. Trent, and the Trent family, helped get our initial business ventures off the ground, and for that we will be forever thankful. The partnership with the Trent family was originally conceived to bring the Sirloin Stockade Steakhouse to Conway. However, the partnership continued when my father ventured into selling Skyline Travel Trailers out the back door of the Sirloin Stockade. Today, Moix RV Supercenter is a full-service recreational vehicle dealership, offering sales, service, parts, and any accessories one would need to enjoy an RV. “We also now operate a light agricultural and power sports dealership in Conway, Moix Equipment & Toy Company, LLC, which sells everything from Spartan Zero Turn Mowers and Kioti Tractors to a full line of Suzuki power sports and motorcycles.” Michael credits the staff as integral to their success. “We have so many people who have been with us for many years. Each and every person on our staff is key.” Moix RV is soon to begin construction on a new service facility. “We are super excited to design a state-of-the-art facility to service our customers. Conway Public Schools ’Teacher of the Week‘ Awards P ROG R AM SP O NSO RS

T

he Conway Public Schools Foundation has introduce a program commemorating teachers, starting with a district-wide ‘Teacher of the Week’ initiative. This program aims to recognize the outstanding efforts of educators in the community by highlighting those who have excelled in their teaching programs and methods. This initiative is sponsored by PattiCakes Bakery, and Faulkner Lifestyle as a media sponsor, highlighting the Teachers of the Week in each publication. The program builds on the Foundation’s longstanding efforts to partner with educators to enrich the learning environment for students. “The mission of the Conway Public Schools Foundation is to empower educators to elevate the student experience,” Drew Spurgers, CPSF Board President, said. “Anything we can do to encourage our educators

and recognize their efforts is worthy work. We’re proud of this program!” Each week, CPSF will recognize local educators for their outstanding performance based on the community’s nominations. Teachers can be nominated by administrators, parents, other teachers, and even students. One recipient is selected and announced live weekly on CPSF’s Facebook page. The first educator to be featured in this program was Julie Turner, a Kindergarten teacher at Ellen Smith Elementary. “Thank you so much for the honor of being the Teacher of the Week. I am overwhelmed with gratitude and feel very blessed to be the first recipient,” said Mrs. Turner. “This program is the perfect way to honor teachers for their hard work and dedication during these unprecedented times.”

has a huge heart and has worked so hard to learn how to effectively teach kindergarteners virtually. She loves her students and is always willing to help others! We are so blessed to have her at Ellen Smith,” said Ms. King. If you know of a teacher who does an extraordinary job and goes above and beyond, visit CPSFoundation.com to submit your nomination for any teacher at any time.

This is what a parent had to say about Mrs. Dismuke...

36 faulkner lifestyle | april 2021

“Mrs. Dismuke possesses all the qualities you hope for your child’s teacher to have. At times this year I have asked myself, “is she human, is this for real?” I do believe she is an angel here on earth the Lord has sent to impact and transform student’s lives. She goes above and beyond in every area whether it is teaching, communicating with parents, or providing a safe and loving learning environment. Mrs. Dismuke is always happy and her passion for teaching and children shows in everything she does. I could go on for days about all the ways she has invested in my daughter and her students.”

Kim Scott | March 12, 2021 School: Carolyn Lewis Elementary Position: Media Specialist Nominator: Parent This is what a parent had to say about Mrs. Scott: “My son, Jack, is a 2nd grade virtual student at CLE. The virtual experience has been challenging in many ways: understanding the virtual platform, being isolated from the school community, and me having to balance my time between overseeing Jack’s work and my own full-time job. I want to extend my deepest gratitude for Jack’s media specialist Kim Scott for going over and beyond to keep Jack engaged and connected to his school. Mrs Scott regularly sends him messages and trades book suggestions with Jack. She recently gathered book ideas from her fellow media specialists for me to keep my avid reader excited. When we experienced difficulty with the virtual platform, Mrs. Scott called and used facetime to walk me through and figure out our barriers. She has also dropped books off at our house to keep Jack reading. Jack is excited to get messages from her and feels connected even in this year of difficulty! For these reasons, I am grateful for Mrs. Scott.”

Taylor Columbus | March 19, 2021 School: Julia Lee Moore Position: Second Grade Teacher Nominator: Administrator and Co-worker This is what a parent had to say about Ms. Columbus: “Ms. Columbus teaches second grade and is new to Julia Lee Moore. Ms. Columbus has fully embraced our “Building a Culture of Caring.” Every day that I walk into her room she always has a smile on her face and a positive attitude. In just a few short weeks, she has built a great rapport with her students and parents. Ms. Columbus does an excellent job of keeping her students actively engaged in academic lessons. As a result, her students are learning and enjoying the awesome classroom atmosphere she has created in which her students know they are loved and cared for. I am excited to watch how our students grow this year under her leadership. Ms. Columbus makes learning fun and exciting! She starts each day in a unique way to connect with students whether it is elbow taps, singing about having a great day, or positive interaction with each student. She is full of energy and truly loves all her students. She has a talent for making difficult content easy for students to understand. She is also a leader in her grade level and shares her technology skills with others in our building! She is a gem and we are so excited she is part of the JLM family this year!” faulknerlifestyle.com 37

L

inda Marie’s was voted Best Business in Vilonia by Faulkner Lifestyle readers! Located at 128 South Mount Olive Road, the boutique opened in October 2017. Linda Weaver, owner, started Linda Marie’s “without any real knowledge of retail. Sharon Southerland and I have been best of friends for many years now, and we both love to sew and quilt. We started off in my husband, Charlie’s, garage. We took over the whole garage and moved him out for about a year. I guess he really wanted his garage back, so he built us a shop in exchange for its return,” she laughs. 42 faulkner lifestyle | april 2021

“One thing led to another, and we ended up with a shopping center on the bypass in Vilonia.” They initially planned to rent some of the space; however, Linda Marie’s continually added to their store until they occupied the entire building. Today, Linda Marie’s is a one-stop shop, offering gifts for most any occasion. “We have something for birthdays, anniversaries, secret sister gifts for church, teacher gifts, baby shower or bridal shower options; we have it all. We also offer free gift wrapping and have bridal and baby registries with free local delivery to showers in Vilonia,” says Linda. Linda Marie’s carries many wellknown brands, such as Brighton

jewelry, sunglasses, and handbags; Tribal clothing; Hobo handbags; Tyler candles and laundry detergent; Bare Minerals skincare and makeup, and more. They also offer a shoe store, which carries Skechers, Clarks, Vionic, Jambu, Corkys, SAS, Hush Puppies, Muck Boots, and top selling Hey Dude, which are available for men, women and kids. “We are always having a shoe sale on something, so come see us,” says Linda. Linda credits her staff for their excellent customer service. “Our wonderful staff of ladies is ready to help you choose the perfect gift for your loved ones. We also offer a ‘Wish Book’ for anyone to stop by and fill out with items you would love someone to buy you for a holiday or other special

occasion. Then, when the date gets close, we can make a phone call to your loved one(s) and let them know you have something picked out. scratch-made, Southern-style, craveable favorites served from the heart. We have over a dozen varieties of chicken salads along with pimento cheese or egg salad, served by the scoop, sandwich, or grab and go Quick Chick bowl. You’ll also find gourmet fresh sides, soups, and delicious desserts.

What are some of your most popular menu items? From simple to savory to fruity and nutty or even a little spicy, we have a chicken salad for everyone. Some of our most popular flavors of chicken salad are the Classic Carol, Fancy Nancy (chicken salad with apples, grapes and pecans), Sassy Scotty (chicken salad

with bacon, ranch and cheddar cheese) and Jalapeño Holly (the name says it all – chicken salad with just the right amount of jalapeños to make the perfect bite). Our Broccoli Salad (fresh broccoli florets tossed in a sweet vinegar-based dressing with shredded mozzarella & cheddar cheeses, topped with crispy bacon) and Grape Salad (red and white seedless grapes covered in a sweet cream cheese mixture, topped with brown sugar & crushed pecans) are two popular fan favorites from our sides selections. Our Chicken Salad BLT is a favorite of our male guests (also known as Chick Magnets). They love the hearty chicken salad sandwich complete with lettuce, tomato and slices of bacon. Do you feature daily or seasonal specials? Yes! Several times per year we introduce a seasonal chicken salad flavor and dessert. This spring, we have “Dillicious Diva,” chicken salad made with fresh dill and cucumbers and also, we have Key Lime Pie. It’s fun to surprise our guests with a new recipe every few months and quite the anticipation builds before each new flavor announcement. We also give free samples of all our menu options in our dining room! What are some of your healthy menu items? We make all of our chicken

salads, pimento cheeses, egg salad and sides from scratch. That means fresh fruits and vegetables, with no preservatives. And our chicken is fresh, all white meat, that we cook in house. Our chicken salad is gluten free and very low carb. We actually have several flavors with one or less grams of carbs and sugar per serving. Those are Classic Carol, Buffalo Barclay, Jalapeño Holly, Dillicious Diva, Kickin’ Kay Lynne, Lauryn’s Lemon Basil and Sassy Scotty. Also, we have a classic mixed green salad served with a scoop
