Watersports training & holidays
Welcome to Rockley Watersports If I only had one word to choose to describe how I feel about the past year, it would be proud. I speak on both a professional and personal level. It may well be down to the glorious weather we’ve had but for whatever reason, the number of school children, youngsters, adults and families we have seen on the water at our six centres across the UK and France have completely surpassed our expectations, and it’s been fantastic to see! Luckily I am surrounded by a great team who actually love their job so delivering the product, whether it’s a school group or Instructor course is never a problem. This year for me has seen so many highlights - we opened a further centre at Bartley Sailing Club in Birmingham. The Dorset Festival at Poole Park was a huge success and offers so many opportunities to local school children. I also spent a few days holidaying at our French family holiday campsite - AzuRivage and had a wonderful time. The product we offer is so well received by our customers and after months of school children, the staff really enjoy our four weeks of families - the atmosphere created is just wonderful. While all this has been going on, I also managed to fulfuil a personal ambition to represent England in the over 45’s hockey team. I have played hockey pretty much all my life however this did not come without its challenges. A freak snowboard injury
almost left me out of the Masters World Cup in Barcelona but just like the values that many of the schools who come to us share aspiration, perserverance, resillience and yes a lot of stubborness got me on that hockey pitch! After 10 gruelling days, we came home with a silver medal. A massive thank you to all my staff for their support leading up to the event and for holding the fort for two weeks while I was away. You are all incredible! Looking forward to 2019, it’s more of the same - but hopefully better! With all our products we will continue to strive to improve what we offer to all our customers. We also plan to expand our BTEC programme, making it accessible nationwide and we continue our search for a further centre in the UK. I anticipate another busy year, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

FABULOUS locations
Poole, dorset & bartley, birmingham We all love where we live, beautiful Poole in Dorset and it is absolutely the perfect place for you to learn to sail, windsurf and powerboat and for us to teach you! Poole Harbour offers possibly the safest and most idyllic conditions, a secure and happy setting for children to experience a residential trip away from home. With tens of square miles of shallow, sheltered water and with the Purbeck Hills as a backdrop, the island-dotted harbour offers a beautiful and challenging environment for children and adults, beginners and experienced sailors alike. Located in the centre of Birmingham in Bartley Green just moments from junction 3 of the M5, Bartley Sailing Club is based on a large, 120 acre drinking water reservoir offering fantastic sailing conditions for the more experienced, whilst still having plenty of sheltered nooks and crannies for those less familiar.

south west france There are few places as stunning in France and we have spent a lot of time ensuring we have picked the perfect locations for our school groups and family holidays. Our three centres in south west France - AzuRivage, Le Lac Mimizan and La Rive are based on large, beautiful fresh water lakes amongst breath taking forests and within short distances of stunning surf beaches and traditional French culture. Our locations are favourites amongst pupils, teachers and families for the large, safe watersports areas and the warmth of the lakes, making it ideal for all abilities.

WHY AN RYA COURSE? The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the National Governing Body for sailing, windsurfing and powerboating and is generally considered to provide the benchmark for watersports training standards globally. RYA recognised clubs and centres are inspected and approved by an independent assessor as working to the highest standards for safety, learning and enjoyment for the students of all of their programmes, so this certainly gives peace of mind when entrusting loved ones to a new activity and environment. RYA training is delivered around the world so if you always look for the badge you can be reassured that instruction is consistent and moving from one RYA venue to another shouldn’t result in having to learn everything again from a different syllabus or training style. www.rockley.org

ADULTS - get into sailing It’s NEVER too late to get into sailing and that’s the beauty of the sport! So if it’s something you’ve always wanted to do, make NOW the time to give it a go!
HERE'S WHY YOU SHOULD GET INTO SAILING 1. It’s a sociable and fun way to get fit and escape from your day-to-day
worries and concerns. 2. At Rockley we offer something for everyone - all ages and all abilities. 3. Dinghy sailing is one of the cheapest ways to get on the water 4. It’s an exhilarating sport where you can enjoy the thrill of being out on the water enjoying the fresh air. 5. The majority of clubs offer a programme of races if you fancy competing. 6. Sailing is one of the very few sports in which able-bodied and disabled sailors can participate on equal terms. 7. Want to make it a family affair? Courses are available for the whole family.
Sailing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and whether your aim is to join a club and become a seasoned racer or to just simply mess around on the water with family and friends, our ‘Get into Sailing’ sessions are a great starting point. The beauty of sailing is that you don’t have to be particularly fit, able-bodied or even a good swimmer as you’ll always be wearing a buoyancy aid - you just need to have the desire to ‘give it a go’! Book on to any of our 2 day beginner courses (see page 8), come along to one of our many ‘Get into Sailing Days’ which we will host on selected Saturdays throughout the year or try our Ladies Only sailing days. With the focus on both learning and fun, these non-certificated but instructional days are designed to get you out on the water and hopefully discovering a love of a new sport. Cost; £75. 10am - 4pm. Lunch is included. ‘Get in to Sailing’ Days: April 20th, May 4th, 25th, August 10th & 24th, October 19th Ladies Only Sailing Days: 13th April, 1st June, 17th August

GET BACK INTO SAILING
A BIT OF YOU TIME! Are you someone who used to love sailing as a youngster but then found that work commitments, illness or having children has meant that you have been unable to pursue your passion? Unfortunately sometimes life just takes over and you find that it’s all about work or ferrying your children to so many clubs that you don’t have time to enjoy the things that you love doing. Whatever your sport, there is nothing better than rediscovering why you loved doing it in the first place. At Rockley we want to encourage adults to get back into sailing and we are hoping that our shorter courses and ‘Get back into Sailing’ sessions fit around the life that you lead today. Book on to any of our 2-day RYA sailing courses (see page 8), come along to one of our ‘Get Back into Sailing’ sessions or try our Ladies Only Sailing Days which we will host throughout the year. These sessions are designed to encourage you to come back to sailing, brush up on the skills you learnt years ago and to further develop your sailing. One of the most important part of these sessions is for you to enjoy what you are doing! So while we will still be given RYA instruction (however you will not receive an RYA certificate), the emphasis is on you having fun, meeting new people and enjoying the social aspect of getting together, as much as what you learn on the water. Cost; £75. 10am - 4pm. Lunch is included. ‘Get Back into Sailing’ Days: April 20th, May 4th, 25th, August 10th & 24th, October 19th Ladies Only Sailing Days: 13th April, 1st June, 17th August www.rockley.org

Why did you choose to do a gap year?
I didn’t feel quite ready to go to university and I had goals I wanted to achieve before settling back into education. Taking a gap year was the best decision I’ve made so far!
Was the course what you expected? Pretty much! Tiring, busy and so so fun. I didn’t expect to become as close as I did with all the other Leapers- we became such good friends. It was hard to say goodbye when most of the group left for France. What were the most rewarding parts of the course?
"It’ s definitely made me a more confident person, for which I am so grateful !"
Definitely passing the instructor courses. After so much effort and many aching muscles it was so satisfying for it all to have paid off! Had you had much sailing experience prior to the course?
I started sailing when I was nine but had done mostly yacht sailing including doing my day skipper qualification and competing in a transatlantic tall ships race but doing the course allowed me to go back into dinghy sailing which was something I’d been wanting to do for ages. Will you continue using your qualifications in the future?
Definitely. I’m planning on joining the sailing team at university and then hopefully using my qualifications to work abroad over the summer! What is it like being part of the Rockley Team?
It’s always fun because everyone is so close and we all get on because we’re all here with the same shared interests. I’m going to be sad to leave at the end of the season for sure. How has your confidence as an Instructor grown? My confidence generally, let alone as an instructor, has grown massively this year. Being an instructor has definitely helped me so much though; I used to be so scared of speaking in front of groups and teaching but now I find it so much easier and it comes more naturally- the difference is unreal.
How have your teaching/sailing skills improved?
I’ve learned a lot about teaching methods, not only through the courses but also by being on session with so many different instructors. I’ve been able to watch how the others work and incorporate their good ideas into what I do, it’s been such a good way to learn! I’ve also managed to improve in my free time as when there’s wind and water we tend to go out sailing or windsurfing in the evenings or on days off to have fun and improve for ourselves. Do you feel you’ve come a long way since your first day?
Absolutely, it’s done me so much good to be pushed out of my comfort zone and because of that I know I’ve developed massively as an instructor but also just as myself. It definitely makes me happy to think back to how I felt on the first day compared to now, I can honestly tell you that I’ve come a long way since then! www.rockley.org

We did loads of things together as a family but also had the opportunity to meet lots of new people. When we managed to tear the children away from their friends, we also enjoyed some time off-site - Hossegor was a personal favourite and I very much recommend the restaurant Le Napoli which is a short walk from the beach. The kids have said it was their best holiday ever, and I have to agree that it was certainly up there as one of the best!”

School & Group Activity Trips - UK & France Over 42 years Rockley has grown and developed to include some of the UK’s most highly regarded residential activity trips for children and young people, with the emphasis on learning by doing. Our original aims are still very much at the heart of the activity programmes today, which focus on building self-confidence through personal achievement and having fun!
LORNA GOOD AND JESS WHEADON, GROUP LEADERS FOR POOLE HIGH TELL US WHY THEY LOVED THEIR FIRST TRIP WITH ROCKLEY ADVENTURE One of the biggest things about going on a school trip is that the safety of all the students is paramount, which means you never really switch off. On this trip however, the Rockley staff were so good and all the activities were so well organised and we felt such a deep sense of safety that were actually able to relax. The Instructors were so professional throughout and their interaction with the students was of such a high quality - they knew how to be safe and have fun with the youngsters at the same time. We were learning new skills alongside the students and it was brilliant to see them so engaged. It also meant that the students felt they could have fun in their interaction with us which was lovely. Seeing the children outside a school context really helped us to build a rapport with them and create a more positive relationship.
"Your staff really took the time to give our students confidence and gain their trust” You go on this trip and you think you’re going to learn and experience watersports, but actually it’s not just about learning to paddleboard or sail a catamaran. They are learning so much more about teamwork, confidence and listening. It really brought everyone together - there was such a team vibe, it was great! I think it’s the best trip I’ve ever been on. The kids were so well behaved and that is because they were always entertained and challenged and had fun at the same time. For us it felt like a holiday too - we just happened to be on holiday with a bunch of 16 year old students!
poole park & bartley Holiday camps, birthday parties, weekend clubs, school events, taster sessions Poole Park Lake located in the heart of Poole, and Bartley Sailing Club located in Birmingham’s Bartley Green are ideally placed to offer so much to the local schools and residents of Poole, Bournemouth and Birmingham. During term time Poole Park Lake and Bartley Reservoir are filled with local primary and secondary school pupils taking part in a whole range of activities enjoying activities outside the classroom in a safe environment. Activities include sailing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and windsurfing - some Call 01202 677272 for a separate leaflet on everything Poole Park and Bartley have to offer.

challenging activities that may be new to them. Locals and tourists can also enjoy the lakes through short 2-hour taster sessions and hiring a range of equipment including pedalos, SUPs and kayaks. Children in particular are well served with our popular weekend morning clubs as well our holiday camps. Or if it’s inspiration you need for your child’s birthday then our 2-hour watersports party is a must! They are also the locations for various events including the Dorset School Games and the Can Do festival - both aimed at increasing competitive sport in schools and watersports participation.

BTEC CASE STUDy Tom Killick graduated from the BTEC L3 Sport course in 2018. Here he talks about the course, what he has done since and his plans for the future. Why did you choose the Rockley BTEC Level 3 Sport? I chose Rockley because I wanted to meet new people. The fact that we get a months work experience either in France or the UK at one of Rockley’s centres also appealed to me. Did you have any previous sailing or watersports experience? Yes, this included yacht racing - competing in events such as Cowes week and Round the Island Race as well as racing across the English Channel. I also
did a bit of dinghy racing and windsurfing at my local club and helped out with teaching in the summer months before I joined the Rockley BTEC course. What qualifications did you graduate with? My RYA First Aid, RYA Powerboat Level 2, RYA Dinghy Instructor and RYA Start Windsurf Instructor as well as my multihull and race instructor endorsements. You’ve been at working at Rockley since you graduated - what has this been like? Working at Rockley has been an amazing and challenging experience - one I will never forget. I’ve made so many new friends and met so many interesting clients along the way which has allowed me to progress not just as an instructor but as an every day person. What were the best bits of the course? Some of the best parts of the course includes our first week where we went to France for a training week as well as teaching out in France during our first year. Others include gaining my instructor qualifications and when we sailed to Brownsea stayed the night and sailed back the next morning. What was most challenging about the course? Trying to balance working full time whilst getting the course work completed. It was worth the challenge as I finished the course early in order to start working at Rockley. How has the course changed you as a person? I feel that I have gained a lot more confidence and independence. I’m doing what I love to do which is to teach and I feel I am getting better every day. What are your future plans? I plan to gain my RYA Senior Instructor and powerboat instructor qualifications ready for the next season ahead of me. Any advice you would give to someone considering doing the course? The opportunities available to you when you complete this course are amazing, such as gaining so many qualifications and being able to go and work abroad. Hard work is needed but it really does pay off in the long run.

Maria Carroll - Sibling Worker
jULIA'S hOUSE! When it comes to Julia’s House, it really is all about the kids! As long term supporters it is such an essential part of the Rockley life that we do what we can to help such a great local charity. One of the perks for us as a Company in supporting Julia’s House is that it gets us all really fit! So whether we are training for a marathon, half marathon, triathlon or cycling event we have them to thank for our (relatively) high level of fitness! Throughout the year Julia’s House also offer a sibling service for the brothers
and sisters of the children that come to the hospice. We work closely with Maria Carroll - sibling worker for Julia’s House and offer residential watersports weekends twice a year. One sibling who came to one of the weekends at Rockley Point said; “When we have sibling get togethers it’s really fun because we get to make friends and have new experiences. It’s great just to be together because we are all going through the same thing.” Maria also said; “These events with all the siblings make such a difference to them and their families and I cannot tell you how highly our relationship with Rockley is valued.” We look forward to continuing our support for a long time to come! www.rockley.org

rockley supports getting children out on the water Each year Rockley hosts the ‘Can Do Festival’ in conjunction with the popular Dorset School Games sailing events at it’s Poole Park location. This free event encourages youngsters of all ages and abilities to take part in watersports and gives them the opportunity to realise their potential. Teacher Andy Darch from Kings Park Academy talks about his experience. We first discovered the ‘Can Do’ Games on an information newsletter sent out by our area sports coordinator. We felt it was an opportunity to get a group of children who have a variety of learning difficulties together in a fun way to tackle a variety of new challenges based on the water. The idea of putting the pupils in pairs allowed us to match up the needs of our students in order to get the most out of the day in a non-threatening environment. Their response was fantastic. We could see them grow in confidence and communicate with others in a new and exciting way that they or we had not experienced before. We took a variety of SEN children to the day in order to see how they would react. When we chose the students we took into account what they would achieve out of attending the activity. Our autistic children took the opportunity to work with other year groups and found great confidence in working with new people. They embraced the new skills that they were learning and came rushing back at the end of a session to pass on their experiences. Our behavioural students were calm and learnt that failure could be fun and the consequences were not a major disaster. The emotional students all developed greater confidence and pride and realsied that they could shine in their own right. This then was reflected back in the classroom with them having a more positive attitude in tackling new concepts and ideas.
Life is one big adventure and we want to help our students find out about themselves to discover their destiny. Taking on a challenge will only increase their confidence and new experiences will only help develop their imaginary literacy skills in the future. Your instructors are also fantastic - they offer such a support to us, the staff and engage with the pupils in such a professional and approachable manor. They make you feel important and the whole experience is a delight. The sense of fun was paramount! Our students loved the whole day and asked for more days like this. One student said; “That was the best day of school ever, I wish we could work with different year groups more often.” This is now being done in the Academy. Another student responded with “What a fantastic day and I know that I can do activities such as sailing without fear.” The parents response was also so supportive with one saying; “My son really enjoyed working as a team and came home bursting with pride and satisfaction after a great day on the water.” Poole Park Manager AJ who organises the event said; “It is fantastic to see so many teachers and pupils taking the opportunity to have a go at the activities we provide - it’s exactly why Poole Park was set up - to make these activities accessible to all children and adults.”
The 2019 Dorset School Games and ‘Can Do’ Festival will take place in June 2019 Please register your school with AJ at aj@rockley.org www.rockley.org
