Already in our 43rd year and it seems that the zest for learning outside the classroom and encouraging youngsters to achieve in a creative, challenging and different environment continues. The world is a natural learning environment and the most effective teacher there is. Sitting in a classroom is one thing but there are so many subjects that crop up when you’re out exploring the real world. History, geography, science, maths, art and languages never feel like a chore when they are studied as part of an exciting journey. Selfactualization: achieving one’s full potential, including creative activites
As a parent of three very young children, I believe that adventure is a basic human need and the younger individuals can experience this the better. For me it’s about giving my girls the freedom to explore in a Esteem needs: safe environment, encouraging them to discover their strengths prestige and feeling of accomplishment and giving them the resilience to pursue something even if it Belongingness and love needs: takes them outside of their comfort zone. It’s about giving intimate relationships, friends them the courage to make decisions on their own, try new Safety needs: things and really engage with other people, young and old. security, safety
Physiological needs: At Rockley, we see youngsters experience so many food, water, warmth, rest positive moments and achieve some amazing things on a weekly basis. As research shows, a residential experience or just a day of learning outside the classroom can be so beneficial to a child’s school life, creating positive, happy and confident individuals. We hope that we get to share these fantastic experiences and opportunities with you and your students.

how learning outside the classroom improves the mental well being of our children NHS figures published recently revealed that almost 400,000 children and young people aged 18 and under are in contact with the health service for mental health problems. With many teachers recognising it as ‘silent epidemic’ there is a real impetus to make learning outside a way of life for schools. Our experience over the years has taught us that there is so much potential for youngsters to thrive in a more relaxed outside learning environment without the stifling restriction of the classroom walls. Our camping adventures allow youngsters to connect to the landscape and gives them a real appreciation of nature and their surroundings. With so much pressure to succeed academically, it is important that we provide activities that will not only encourage learning but also enhance mental well-being. Many of our teachers have told us how “happy and creative” their children have been during their time with us and how some have “excelled beyond their expectations” because of their new environment. There is also much more opportunity for teachers to put the onus on the pupils to problem solve, interact more with others and show their resillience. Andrew Mead MA (Hons) (Oxon), Headmaster at Lytchett Minster School agrees that education is about more than what can be measured by exams: “For young people to thrive and develop into well-rounded, healthy, confident young adults, they need opportunities that will enthuse, excite and challenge them - both physically and mentally. Rockley offers these opportunities in abundance!” www.rockley.org/schools
At Rockley Adventure we offer a whole range of activities designed to engage young people and encourage them to embrace adventure and learning - something that cannot always be achieved in the classroom. We offer activities which will allow young people to develop their independence, their leadership skills, and confidently work as part of a team.

The Rockley Schools Team are made up of a bunch of individuals with a wealth of experience and youthful energy. They are uncomprimisingly passionate about watersports and the outdoors and are dedicated to exceeding your customer expectations.
Jack has been with Rockley since 2010.
Sara joined the Rockley team in 2016. She loves to travel, and as a former teacher at a Primary School, she fully recognises the benefits of learning outside the classroom.
“For me, it’s all about providing youngsters with the best outdoor learning experiences possible in order that they can thrive as individuals.”
“You truly cannot underestimate the extent to which complimenting what you teach in the classroom with outdoor activities can really improve a pupil’s level of engagement, creativity and personal development.”
The father of three young girls, he recognises that sometimes the best way to engage youngsters is by taking them outside.
Keiron started at Rockley in 2009 and
Cath first started at Rockley in 2007 as an
“We are constantly striving to improve what we offer which is why your feedback each year is so important to us. We want to continually surpass our customer expectations. It’s also about ensuring the highest level of professionalism from our staff in order to achieve this”
“By stepping out of the classroom, children can gain an understanding and appreciation of just how capable they are. When you see it first hand, job satisfaction really doesn’t get much better than that!”
RYA Instructor, pursued a life in the marine industry and rejoined us in March 2018. She absolutely loves the water and even lives on her very own yacht.
LOVES sailing! For him, it’s all about going above and beyond and being the best at what we do.
Our reputation as the premier providers of watersports activities and training comes not least from our committed and highly qualified team of staff - in fact they are our greatest asset. At Rockley, it is our team who ensure that a trip with us is the one you and your school choose year after year. All members of our team do everything they can to ensure you and your group have the best possible time with us. They have been chosen for their professionalism, enthusiasm, their passion for the outdoors and their ability to instill a sense of fun into all aspects of your trip; from teaching to our programme of evening activities.
“Brilliant, we would recommend Rockley without reservation. Amazed by the level of enthusiasm of your staff, I don’t know how they do it but it is brilliant!” Swanage School
Being part of the Rockley group we can boast the highest level of qualified staff with seven RYA Coach Assessors and 12 Senior Instructors amongst our permanent staff. We are dedicated to the continuous training and development of all staff in order to maintain our high standards of excellence.
long time. It was brilliant for us to have fun and to see the students so engaged.
Poole High School Teachers, Lorna Good & Jess Wheadon, talk about their 2018 residential trip to France with 60 of their students.
The structure of the days and the activities were great for our students. Your instructors give them the time to learn a skill and really grow. It was great to see the catamarans zooming by at the end of the week. We were learning new skills alongside the students and sometimes the students were teaching us things which was amazing.
Watersports training & holidays
Considerations when booking a school trip Safety! One of the biggest things about taking students away is that the safety of the students is paramount. When you’re on a school trip, you never switch off, you’re always conscious of what the kids are doing and what you’ve got planned, so while it’s a holiday for the kids, for the staff its actually hard work. On this trip however, because the staff were so organised we were able to relax which is really rare. The team were there all through the day from when you got up in the morning right through to getting them to bed - there was always this deep sense of safety. The Instructors were so professional throughout the trip and their interaction with the students was of such a high quality - they knew how to be safe and have fun with students at the same time. It also meant that the students felt they could have fun in their interaction with us which was lovely. On other trips safety has always been a concern, but with a Rockley trip we could really trust the staff.
The benefits of an informal learning environment
Raising aspirations Speaking about learning new skills and going above and beyond, we had a student who couldn’t ride a bike. I didn’t mention this to the Rockley staff, however during the trail biking, one of your instructors spent the whole session teaching this lad how to ride. He was so patient with him and when the boy actually got the hang of it, it was a really lovely moment. The boy had a massive beam on his face. It was such an accomplishment for him and so amazing that your instructor took the time to teach him this new skill. This will have a massive effect on that boy. It was a really lovely moment.
Teacher, student rapport The trip really helped us to build a rapport with the children and a more positive relationship with the students seeing them outside a school context. I’ve not laughed as much that week consistently in such a www.rockley.org/schools www.rockley.org
01202 677 677272 01202 272
Improved engagement and confidence You go on this trip and you think you’re going to learn and experience watersports but actually its not just about learning to paddleboard or sail a catamaran, it’s so much more than that. The students are learning about teamwork, confidence and listening and it really brought everyone together. We were on Twitter so that the parents could see what they were doing and they were just so pleased that their son or daughter were getting this kind of experience and trying such a range of activities. A lot of our students came away inspired by the week.
Building relationships I think it’s the best trip I’ve ever been on. The kids were so well behaved because they were entertained and challenged. There was structure but they still had so much fun. On a selfish note, the level of how accommodating the staff were was unbelievable – even from the bottles of wine and beer in the fridge. Its such a lovely welcome and the cheese and wine night on the first night was such a lovely touch. Sitting with the staff and
"The evening activities were brilliant particularly the mud challenge – all the kids and staff joined in which added to the fun. Seeing the students laugh and love a good time was just one of many great moments" us all getting to know each other was a great start to the trip - I felt I could ask them anything. It was our holiday but we also happened to be on holiday with a bunch of 16 year old students!
Accessible to all
One great thing about the trip was that they could pay for it in installments over time which was brilliant. It meant that students who had never ever set foot on a paddleboard or a catamaran or even get to go abroad are suddenly getting these opportunities. All the children loved their time on the water and this is a real testament to your staff. Seeing the students laugh and have such a good time – there were some great moments, it was fantastic. Other trips I’ve been on, it’s been a case of take it or leave it but a Rockley trip, I can’t wait to come back! www.rockley.org/schools
all you need to
What specialist equipment is required? A watersports trip (unlike a ski trip) does not require much in the way of specialist equipment. We provide all the necessary boats, boards, bikes and kayaks as well as approved buoyancy aids and waterproofs! You usually only need to bring swimwear as well as old clothing and trainers you don’t mind getting wet. Nevertheless, the watersports activities can be enjoyed to the full if participants wear a rash vest and wetsuit shoes, which are widely available to purchase. A wetsuit might also be a useful purchase and these are also now widely available at a reasonable cost.
staff qualifications and experience, instructor to participant ratios and our operational procedures. In addition, our UK centres are AALS (Adventure Activities Licensing Scheme) licensed. We have also developed a comprehensive Safety Management System to monitor, record and implement safe operation of our centres and activities, which encompasses policies, risk assessments, emergency and operating procedures. See also our website for further information on our safety procedures and for downloads of documentation such as our risk assessments at www.rockley.org/ schools/teachers
Do you have to be a strong swimmer? You don’t have to be a strong swimmer, or even a swimmer at all, to enjoy our watersports activities although it helps to be water confident. You will need to inform us if any of your group are unable to swim 50 metres unaided. As mentioned above, we provide all persons with buoyancy aids and provided we are notified, we can cater for non-swimmers.
Do the coaches have seatbelts? All the UK coach company operators used on our inclusive French activity trips comply with UK, as well as EU law (French coaches comply with EU and French laws), and are fitted with seatbelts. It is the Group Leader’s responsibility to ensure that the seatbelts are worn.
Are there any extra charges? Our residential school group trips are fully inclusive of our activities as detailed in your group’s itinerary, all meals and drinks from arrival on, to departure from the centre, insurance and, for trips to our French centres and return travel. We do offer a number of extra additional activities and excursions to enhance your trip. These can be arranged and paid for in advance or on arrival and are subject to availability. No refunds will be given for extras booked and paid for but not used. What about insurance? Our residential activity trips include personal accident and travel insurance. Please see the Trip Planner, on our website, for further details and complete policy wording. For activity trips that fall within the Package Travel Regulations (1993) your money is fully protected by an insurance scheme operated by International Passenger Protection Ltd. What about safety? All our watersports centres are fully recognised by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) for the tuition of sailing, windsurfing and powerboating and are inspected annually. This means that our watersports activities are run in line with the guidelines laid down by our NGB, the Royal Yachting Association, and encompass
Do we need passports? A passport valid for six months beyond the length of stay and issued within the past 10 years is required in order to visit France and non-EU passport holders may require visas. Young people travelling as a group can travel under a Group Passport obtainable from the Passport Agency. Contact them for further information on 0870 5210410 and see also our Trip Planner. Lost, stolen or new passports will take a minimum of 2 weeks to replace. Campsite and centre rules We ask that all our groups comply with the rules set out by the campsites and ourselves. This helps ensure the enjoyment and safety of all our customers and other users of the campsites and facilities. These rules are to be found in our pupil behaviour charter and will be detailed in our Welcome Talk on arrival of your group. Supervision The campsites organise their own evening entertainment programmes throughout high season such as cabaret performances and music events, which are generally open until 1am. Daytime programmes such as sporting activities can be arranged at the campsite reception. All the activities are subject to demand and may be altered. Rockley Adventure staff are resident at our centres and therefore provide supervision during the day and evening. Certain staff are nominated as contacts for Group Leaders and group
members throughout the day and evening; we also have a member of staff on duty through the night. Group Leaders are required to nominate two of the adults from their group on a daily basis to be their group’s duty contact staff throughout the day, evening and night. Accommodation Both our tent and bunkroom accommodation sleep a maximum of 6 people. Security Each of our watersports centres is located on a private campsite with only one entrance/exit and is in a separate area of the campsite itself. Lock Box Our centres can store passports, EHIC cards and any cash float held by the Group Leader in the centre lock box. We are, however, unable to provide secure storage for pupils’ mobile phones, MP3 or ipod players etc which is why we strongly discourage the bringing of valuable belongings on the trip. First Aid Our centres are fully equipped with first aid boxes located in the Rockley offices on site. All our main safety boats carry a First Aid kit and suitable communications. All our Instructors hold a valid First Aid certificate and attend a health and safety induction when joining us. Currency & pocket money We recommend that you carry a float of Euros/ Sterling for unforeseen circumstances. However, for safety reasons we suggest that you use cards where possible. Pupils should be advised to bring only a small amount of pocket money; up to €100 is normally sufficient for trips to our French centres and between £20 to £40 for residential trips to our UK centre. Facilities We try to be as accurate as possible with regards to the availability and opening times of the facilities available on the campsites. However, due to circumstances beyond our control ie weather, time of year, local regulations or demand, some facilities may not be available - this will particularly be the case outside of high season (July and August) when the campsites are quieter.
