Watersports training & holidays

Welcome to Rockley Watersports I thought it was going to be hard to top last year’s 40th celebrations, but as a Company, it seems we are good at looking ahead to the future with excitment and optimism! 2017 has been a fantastic year with once again so many youngsters, adults and school children taking to the waters across our five centres in the UK and France. For me this year I have decided to follow suit and have spent less time in the office and more time on the water doing what I love the most - teaching! As well as taking my children to various sailing events across the country, I’ve also started training ladies at my local sailing club twice a week and it’s been amazing. Going back to teaching on a regular basis and watching these ladies improve their sailing, develop a passion for the sport and really have fun, reminds me exactly why Rockley Watersports was set up in the first place. This experience has been a reminder to me that while office work is a necessity and life can be chaotic, we should all try and take the time to do the things we love or find a new sport or passion that makes us feel great. For me, it’s sailing - hopefully you share this with me too.

WHO WE ARE - WHAT'S OUR STORY to sum us up We are a bunch of people - married with families or enjoying being single. We have children and a lot of dogs. We love to swim, cycle, run (sometimes simultaneously), sail, wakeboard, ski and windsurf. We’re partial to a g&t, some love to bake and most of us (OK all of us) love to eat cake. We are all different and similar in equal measures, but there are a few things we all have in common - we love where we live in fabulous Dorset, we love the outdoors, we love the water and we are passionate about what we do! Welcome to Rockley Watersports!

IT ALL STARTED WITH WANTING TO TEACH KIDS HOW TO SAIL...

and it all began..... We have been teaching sailing and watersports activities for over 40 years and it all started with just a caravan on the beach as an office and a few boats. The idea was to find a way of introducing more youngsters to sailing. 41 years later we continue this aim but it’s now more than that. Our School and Group activity trips offer a new and exciting way to educate youngsters, our BTEC L3 Sport (Outdoor Adventure) course offers an alternative to A levels, a gateway to University and the opportunity for individuals to pursue a career in the watersports industry, our RYA Instructor Courses see Rockley train more individuals to Instructor level than any other sailing centre in the UK and our junior, youth and adult courses means we get to see so many experience the joy of sailing, often for the first time. Bring on the next few years!

A

word from Rockley’s MD, Pip

When it comes to this time of year for me to write something for the brochure, it always amazes me how quickly time has flown! Putting pen to paper really does give me the chance to reflect on what has been a fantastic year and the chance to tell you about some exciting changes and plans for 2018 and beyond. We have certainly noticed that people are now spending their spare time very differently - we seem to have less of it for starters! With this in mind and a distinct trend in people taking up our shorter courses, we have decided to offer more sailing days and shorter courses. We hope that this will fit into your busy lives and give everyone the opportunity to try a new sport, rediscover a passion or simply improve on existing skills. As a keen hockey player, sailor and skiier to name but a few, for me, part of the reason I love these sports is down to the people I do these activities with. We hope that our sailing days give you the chance to meet new people and really enjoy the social aspect of doing a sport as well as the accomplishment of learning along the way. When I look back on 2017, I am immensley proud of our team, we have received some absolutely incredible feedback and nine times out of ten, it’s down to our fantastic staff team, both here in the UK and over in France. We make every effort to ensure the service we give you is first class and fortunately you believe it is too!

exciting plans for the future Watersports training & holidays

Well, at the time this brochure has gone to print we are in the throws of purchasing a property with 30 acres of land, which we will be turning into a Land-based Activity Centre to add to our ever increasing schools & groups product range. The centre will have activities like climbing, archery, orienteering, bushcraft, forest skills, zip wires to name a few, no water in sight! We are hugely excited about expanding our offering and urge you to keep your eyes peeled for news on our website and through our social media channels.

Our BTEC course has seen a record intake this year and we are again excited about the new term and the journey these young people will be on over the next two years. A real proud moment for me this summer was seeing several of our graduates from previous years still working for Rockley, but now in senior roles, being amazing Ambassadors for the company, true professionals. The family holidays we offer in France has once again been fantastic this year so if you do fancy a wonderful relaxing, fun, sociable and active holiday with your family, then see pages 26 - 33 or check out our website - www.rockley.org/watersports/family-holidays Last but not least, our relationship with Julia’s House has gone from strength to strength and we have been delighted to be involved in the Siblings weekends again this year and the infamous Splash in the Park event. Personally I have once again run the Bournemouth Half Marathon for the charity, along with four novice running friends who had not even run 5km before agreeing to run and support this incredible charity, a very proud moment indeed. I hope you are able to make some time this year to get out on the water and enjoy this fantastic sport, whether it’s for an hour or a week - once you try it, we hope you will be hooked like we are. www.rockley.org

FABULOUS locations

south west france There are few places as stunning in France and we have spent a lot of time ensuring we have picked the perfect locations for our school groups and family holidays. Our three centres in south west France - AzuRivage, Le Lac Mimizan and La Rive are based on large, beautiful fresh water lakes amongst breath taking forests and within short distances of stunning surf beaches and traditional French culture. Our locations are favourites amongst pupils, teachers and families for the large, safe watersports areas and the warmth of the lakes, making it ideal for all abilities.

Watersports training & holidays

Poole, dorset We all love where we live, beautiful Poole in Dorset and it is absolutely the perfect place for you to learn to sail, windsurf and powerboat and for us to teach you! Poole Harbour offers possibly the safest and most idyllic conditions, a secure and happy setting for children to experience a residential trip away from home. With tens of square miles of shallow, sheltered water and with the Purbeck Hills as a backdrop, the island-dotted harbour offers a beautiful and challenging environment for children and adults, beginners and experienced sailors alike.

WHY AN RYA COURSE? The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the National Governing Body for sailing, windsurfing and powerboating and is generally considered to provide the benchmark for watersports training standards globally. RYA recognised clubs and centres are inspected and approved by an independent assessor as working to the highest standards for safety, learning and enjoyment for the students of all of their programmes, so this certainly gives peace of mind when entrusting loved ones to a new activity and environment. RYA training is delivered around the world so if you always look for the badge you can be reassured that instruction is consistent and moving from one RYA venue to another shouldn’t result in having to learn everything again from a different syllabus or training style. www.rockley.org

ADULTS - get into sailing It’s NEVER too late to get into sailing and that’s the beauty of the sport! So if it’s something you’ve always wanted to do, make NOW the time to give it a go!

HERE'S WHY YOU SHOULD GET INTO SAILING 1. It’s a sociable and fun way to get fit and escape from your day-to-day

worries and concerns. 2. At Rockley we offer something for everyone - all ages and all abilities. 3. Dinghy sailing is one of the cheapest ways to get on the water 4. It’s an exhilarating sport where you can enjoy the thrill of being out on the water enjoying the fresh air. 5. The majority of clubs offer a programme of races if you fancy competing. 6. Sailing is one of the very few sports in which able-bodied and disabled sailors can participate on equal terms. 7. Want to make it a family affair? Courses are available for the whole family.

Sailing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and whether your aim is to join a club and become a seasoned racer or to just simply mess around on the water with family and friends, our ‘Get into Sailing’ sessions are a great starting point. The beauty of sailing is that you don’t have to be particularly fit, able-bodied or even a good swimmer as you’ll always be wearing a buoyancy aid - you just need to have the desire to ‘give it a go’! Book on to any of our 2 day beginner courses (see page 10), come along to one of our many ‘Get into Sailing Days’ which we will host on selected Saturdays throughout the year or try our Ladies Only sailing days. With the focus on both learning and fun, these non-certificated but instructional days are designed to get you out on the water and hopefully discovering a love of a new sport. Cost; £75. 10am - 4pm. Lunch is included. ‘Get in to Sailing’ Days: 31st March, 7th April, 26th May, 2nd June, 11th & 18th August Ladies Only Sailing Days: 14th April, 2nd June, 25th August

GET BACK INTO SAILING

A BIT OF YOU TIME Are you someone who used to love sailing as a youngster but then found that work commitments, illness or having children has meant that you have been unable to pursue your passion? Unfortunately sometimes life just takes over and you find that it’s all about work or ferrying your children to so many clubs that you don’t have time to enjoy the things that you love doing. Whatever your sport, there is nothing better than rediscovering why you loved doing it in the first place. At Rockley we want to encourage adults to get back into sailing and we are hoping that our shorter courses and ‘Get back into Sailing’ sessions fit around the life that you lead today. Book on to any of our 2-day RYA sailing courses (see page 10), come along to one of our ‘Get Back into Sailing’ sessions or try our Ladies Only Sailing Days which we will host throughout the year. These sessions are designed to encourage you to come back to sailing, brush up on the skills you learnt years ago and to further develop your sailing. One of the most important part of these sessions is for you to enjoy what you are doing! So while we will still be given RYA instruction (however you will not receive an RYA certificate), the emphasis is on you having fun, meeting new people and enjoying the social aspect of getting together, as much as what you learn on the water. Cost; £75. 10am - 4pm. Lunch is included. ‘Get Back into Sailing’ Days: 31st March, 7th April, 26th May, 2nd June, 11th & 18th August Ladies Only Sailing Days: 14th April, 2nd June, 25th August www.rockley.org

HAVE YOUR SAY Ladies from local sailing club, parkstone yacht club talk about their love of sailing since joining their weekly sessions with rockley watersports owner, peter gordon

Factfile kate glasbrook , first took to t he waters just three years ago and now she 's officially hooked !

whatever floats your boat

I started learning to sail at Parkstone Yacht Club 3 years ago, when we joined as a family. My husband has sailed since he was a child, and I was keen to learn even though I was 40! It is only thanks to the brilliant volunteers at PYC that I have had the confidence to try sailing in a safe environment on Thursday evenings. This year has been the best because Peter Gordon has kindly given up mornings and evenings to train us up. I am lucky enough to attend the morning sessions, with a relatively small and supportive group of ladies. I am not really interested in racing, so for me, the enjoyment comes from learning a new skill in in the beautiful setting of Poole Harbour. When I am out on the water (and

sometimes in it!) I forget about everything else and relax. There have been many hairy moments when the wind has picked up, but I am always pleased I have gone out. I have found a new interest and made some great friends. I now also appreciate what my young children face when they go sailing, so maybe I am a bit more sympathetic!

Factfile spurred on by her TWO son's love of s ailing, mel decided that it was about time SHE joined in on all the fun and action! Parkstone Yacht Club as a family and then I joined the Ladies sailing fleet with Peter on Thursday mornings and have had the best time. I learnt to sail on a Sunsail holiday in Turkey in my twenties. I did a weeks course in a Pico and absolutely loved it. My husband is a water sports junkie and learnt to sail as a child, but his passion is wind and kite surfing. Upon returning from Turkey, I had planned to join a sailing club, having just moved to Poole, but I was working full time, studying and trying to also learn to windsurf. Just not enough hours in the day! I never did master windsurfing and while I have sailed on holiday, I had done very little sailing, until this year, since my twenties. Two years ago my eldest son, Max, then aged 7, started sailing Optimists at Parkstone Yacht Club. I helped on the course and loved being on the water. I found myself at Parkstone Yacht Club twice a week watching my son have so much fun from sailing with his friends. My youngest son then started sailing optimists and I thought “I want to be part of the fun! We joined

I have met some lovely ladies who are all of a similar sailing standard to me and I have personally challenged myself and sailed in conditions I would not have dreamed of a few months ago. There have been days on the water with clear blue skies and light winds, chatting as we sailed around Brownsea to beating all the way to Round Island, hiking out for dear life! While the black eye I received from a gybing boom has been probably the worse bit so far, it certainly has not put me off sailing! This year, we are off on a Neilson holiday to Greece and I hope to improve my sailing in double handed boats and also have fun with my family.

WE PROFILE..... Watersports training & holidays

The saying goes ‘If you love what you do, then you should do what you love’ and Rob certainly seems to life by that mantra. As well as being our Operations Director and despite it also being his day job, Rob still takes every opportunity he can to get out on the water with his family and friends. As part of this Rob is a keen and very competitive sailor in both dinghies and keel boats.

"lIke everything, variety is the spice of life"

Part of Rob’s activities outside of work involve being a member of a team campaigning five person J/24 keelboat at sailing competitions across the globe. In 2016 they won the European Championship and so far in 2017 they have won a number of UK events as well as placing 3rd, and 1st European team, at Kiel Week in Germany. By the time this goes to print Rob and team will be competing at the 2017 World Championships to be held in Canada and, in current form, they are in great shape to be competing for the podium places. As our resident ‘Ask the Expert”, Rob is used to answering the odd question or two. Here, we ask him about his sailing and what lessons he would pass on to others looking at their options in the sport personally and competitively.

YOU CAN CONTACT ROB WITH ANY OF YOUR QUESTIONS ON HELLO@ROCKLEY.ORG Photo courtesy of RPS www.rockley.org 01202 677 272Photos 20 26

Q

What led you to sail in the J/24 class?

The J/24 is one of the iconic one-design classes with 5,500 boats A build worldwide and an alumni that rivals any. Previous champions of the class have included Olympic, Americas Cup and round the world race winners so you know that the standard of competition will always be high and any successes will be on merit of having sailed well and made good decisions. It is also a class that has been adopted in Poole and fits well into our local environment and all boats are well matched and results are not decided on the level of your finances but your race craft as a team. I also really like the ability to sail as part of a team and we have spent a lot of time focusing on the way we interact, share responsibilities and support each other – something that is essential for any successful relationship in life. I personally take great enjoyment from sailing in one-design fleets, where every boat is evenly matched and at the finish you instantly know how well or badly you have performed rather than waiting for handicaps to be calculated.

Q

A

How fit and strong do you need to be?

Obviously like any active sport you need to have a base level fitness to be able to enjoy sailing competitively but, depending on the class you sail and position you perform, there are a variety of options for you. Ironically despite being 6ft2 and 85 kgs my role on the J/24 is as tactician, so I have very limited physical involvement in boat handling exercises and instead spend my time focusing on our route around the course and gaining benefit from conditions and boat on boat situations as they arrive. We sail as a mixed gender team, with every position on board vital for the overall performance, and have tried to have some experience of each role so we understand the challenges we each face.

Q

In my opinion this is essential to ensure that the natural foundations are in place before progressing into craft with multiple crew and higher loads on the controls. Keel boat sailing is the natural stepping stone between the two disciplines.

Get in on the action! In order to give others the opportunity to experience keel boat sailing and think about how their dinghy skills would translate into bigger boats we have a few days planned in 2018 to give intermediate level sailors the chance to try their hand in a keel boat with coaching provided by Rob and the team at Rockley. Dates; 31st March & 1st Sept Price; £95

Would you recommend others to try keel boat sailing?

Absolutely, like everything else variety is the spice of life. Many people A look to gain the basic skills in dinghy sailing before translating this knowledge onto bigger craft and becoming involved in yacht sailing skills. School & Group Activity Trips - UK & France Over 40 years Rockley has grown and developed to include some of the UK’s most highly regarded residential activity trips for children and young people, with the emphasis on learning by doing. Our original aims are still very much at the heart of the activity programmes today, which focus on building self-confidence through personal achievement and having fun!

Jonny Owen, PE TEACHER AT RINGWOOD SCHOOL TELLS US WHY A TRIP WITH ROCKLEY TICKS ALL THE BOXES WHEN IT COMES TO LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM Ringwood School have been running trips with Rockley for over 15 years now and I have been trip leader for the past six. I’m a massive believer in learning outside the classroom. Students don’t really know what they can achieve until they are pushed to their limits and for some students their limits are no where near touched within the four walls of a classroom. It’s not until they are faced with sailing or white water rafting where they realise what they can achieve. I feel everyone has the right to see what they can do and the opportunities that a Rockley trip offers ticks all those boxes. I truly believe that these kinds of trips are a great leveller. Whether the children are sporty or not, or have had any experience on the water, when they are put in this environment, everyone is equal. New friendship groups are formed and students who have never spoken to each other before come back great friends. It’s breaking down social barriers, something that isn’t necessarily possible during a Monday-Friday, 9am-3pm school week. New skills are learnt and children’s confidence just soar - you can’t put a cap on a student’s confidence and how that will translate when they come back to school. I’ve been on a lot of trips with other providers and the Rockley experience and ethos is by far the best. We couldn’t ask anything more of the staff. Any requirements we ask for on-site are dealt with straight away - the experience of the staff both in the UK and France is fantastic and their attention to detail is impeccable.

Gemma who lives in Poole, Dorset graduated from the BTEC L3 Sport course in 2017. She talks about the course and her plans for the future. How did you choose the Rockley BTEC Level 3 Sport? I went to a careers fair where I met and spoke to the Rockley team. I subsequently went to one of their Open Days and realised that this course was exactly what I was looking for. Did you have any previous sailing or watersports experience? I had been to Rockley’s Poole Park centre on a Primary School trip when I was younger but had no other sailing or watersports experience. What qualifications did you graduate with? My RYA Dinghy and Windsurf Instructor, RYA Powerboat Level 2 and RYA First Aid. Where are you now? I am currently working in France for Rockley as an Activity Instructor, making full use of my qualifications and enjoying life! What were the best bits of the course? What I loved most about the course was the mixture of theory and practical work. The practical was a lot of fun, working as a team and getting to meet so many new people who are now friends for life. I learnt a lot. What is next for you? Where would you like to be next year? Rockley have a great scheme where staff can further their qualifications whilst working for them. As for the long term future, I’m planning to go to Univerusty to study Sports Management and then hope to work further afield in Australia or the Caribbean. Any tips you would give someone thinking about doing the course? Keep an open mind and push yourself. It is both a very enjoyable and rewarding course when you put your mind to it - you really can achieve great things! www.rockley.org

jULIA'S hOUSE When it comes to Julia’s House, it really is all about the kids! As long term supporters it is such an essential part of the Rockley life that we do what we can to help such a great local charity. One of the perks for us as a Company in supporting Julia’s House is that it gets us all really fit! So whether we are training for a marathon, half marathon, triathlon or cycling event we have them to thank for our (relatively) high level of fitness! Throughout the year Julia’s House also offer a sibling service for the brothers

and sisters of the children that come to the hospice. We work closely with Maria Carroll - sibling worker for Julia’s House and offer residential watersports weekends twice a year. Olivia aged 12 who came to one of the weekends at Rockley Point in April said; ‘When we have sibling get togethers it’s really fun because we get to make friends and have new experiences. It’s great just to be together because we are all going through the same thing’ Maria also said; ‘These events with all the siblings make such a difference to them and their families and I cannot tell you how highly our relationship with Rockley is valued’ We look forward to continuing our support for a long time to come! www.rockley.org

WHY SAILING REALLY IS an all-inclusive sport Unlike some sports, sailing is something that most people can do even if you do have a disabiltiy. Young sailor, Nathaniel, 18, talks about how he feared that his diabetes diagnoses would end his sailing career and how he’s learnt to cope with his disability. I started sailing when I was just 5 years with my Mum and Dad old and have since competed in many National and international events. When I was given my Type 1 Diabetec diagnosis back in 2012, my biggest challenge was to figure out how it would affect my ability to sail. After a few days of panicking I reached the conclusion that, if I wanted to keep sailing, there was going to be a way. With this mind set, a bit of research and talking to my doctors, I tried different ways of monitoring my blood glucose levels while on the water so that I could keep tight control of my condition. After a bit of experimentation and guidance I realised that being a Type 1 Diabetic wouldn’t affect my sailing at all if I was smart about it and was honest with myself. People in the sailing world always ask me if it has made sailing more difficult and my response will always remain the same: being diabetic simply made me more aware of things I wasn’t aware of beforehand. It really has been about educationg myself - knowing what food I should eat at what times of the day around my sailing to ensure my diabetes is under control but also help me sail as best I can when I do get out onto the water. Most of my sailing is currently done through University which involves shorter

races. The fact that I don’t have to spend long periods of time on the water allows me to have more accurate control over my diabetes. Being able to come off the water between some races means I can test my blood sugar and do an injection or eat some food should I need to. It’s a completely different story during longer competitions. Injecting myself while out on the water can become difficult wearing a wetsuit so for me it’s about making sure I’ve eaten enough before an event and that I take the right amount and kind of food out on the water with me inorder to maintain my blood sugar levels. Obviously in stronger winds, my work load will be that much higher so all of these things need to be taken in to an account. Being diabetic may be a huge inconvenience and it does come with many challenges but there was no way I was ever going to let it get in the way of my sailing. If I had given up and stopped sailing it would have been much more difficult for me to accept the diagnosis. I would have always blamed my diabetes as the reason I could no longer do the sport I loved with such a passion. I really believe that finding a way to sail despite being diabetic has made me a much more confident and determined sailor.

CAN DO FESTIVAL 11th and 12th June 2018 sees Rockley Watersports host the annual ‘Can Do’ Festival watersports events in Poole Park in conjunction with the popular Dorset School Games sailing events. The aim of this 2-day event is to increase participation in sailing and watersports activities for primary and secondary school children. Hundreds of school children from local Dorset schools have taken part over the past four years. Please register your school with AJ at aj@rockley.org. www.rockley.org
