THE NATURAL DEPTHS PROFILE

NATURAL DEPTHS: OUR DIVERSITY AND WHOLENESS The Natural Depths Process and Profile was inspired by the work of Wilson Van Dusen. I was fortunate to know and work with “Van” training drug counselors during the early 70's. His experience as a psychologist led him to formulate the theory of Natural Depths. Briefly put, the theory suggests each of us has a definite psychological identity that is stable over time—our Natural Depths—and we will be more effective if we understand, accept and align with it. This psychological identity is a parallel to our physical identity. For example, if I am 295 pounds and strong as a bull, I will be more likely to succeed in sports that center on strength and size (football, weight-lifting, wrestling) than I will be in those that demand speed and agility (gymnastics, diving, high hurdles). We take this kind of self-acceptance as obvious. Natural Depths suggests we work for the same kind of understanding, acceptance and alignment psychologically. Having an identity—physical or psychological—doesn't mean we don't grow and change. We do. If you look at photographs taken of you over the course of your life, you will see enormous growth and change, and you will always recognize yourself. It is the same psychologically. Of course we grow and change, and our basic psychological identity is always there to recognize. The Natural Depths Process helps us see that fundamental self so we can honor it in our personal and career decisionmaking.

THE NATURAL DEPTHS PROCESS The Natural Depths Process conceives of the self as an orchestra of complementary subpersonalities, all bringing their own perspectives, abilities and egos to every situation. While we each have and use the full range of sub-personalities, we also each prefer an individual balance among them (our unique Natural Depths). Part of the Natural Depths Process is to meet, recognize and accept your personal orchestra. Although you've probably seen most of them before, some may not be very familiar. In the process of reviewing them, you will probably experience both excitement and discomfort. Enjoy the excitement and accept the discomfort; they are both part of increasing your selfmastery. Essential to the performance of any orchestra is the conductor. While it's true conductors don't play an instrument, an orchestra functions very poorly, if at all, without them. It is the same for individuals and organizations. If the conductor is absent or unskilled, the sub-personalities that have the most energy take over and make their kind of noise—whether or not it's appropriate at the time. In the Natural Depths Process we seek to recognize and identify with our personal conductor; this enables us to lead ourselves as effectively as possible—and trains us to lead the larger orchestras of the world.

Intro to ND’s & Profile

The Natural Depths Profile will help you recognize and use your Natural Depths more productively. It does this by helping you clarify and compare different perceptions of desired, actual and natural behavior patterns. It has been used in career development, team building, hiring, conflict management, performance appraisal, informal feedback and many forms of personal and family relationships. The Profile's purpose is to help you: 

Understand yourself and others more fully;

Accept your own and others' strengths and weaknesses;

See how to best utilize your own and others' talents;

Enjoy and celebrate the diversity that is humanity.

The Profile helps you explore the balance between four sub-personalities: The Evaluator, The Imager, The Developer and The Implementer—each having an assertive and responsive aspect. Like any psychological tool, the Profiles represent only a partial inventory of the many facets of the personality. We know that no instrument can capture the full richness of the human psyche, and emphasize that such data should be considered as only one of the inputs in decision-making. Remember, the map is not the territory. Given these limitations, the thoughtful application of the Profiles' information can significantly increase your personal effectiveness and the success of those you guide. The Natural Depths Process becomes even more important as you grow in your career and become responsible for blending the Natural Depths of larger and more diverse groups. Perhaps the most challenging task of a leader is to effectively synthesize the talents of research, marketing, production, finance. Respect for—and productive use of—diverse Natural Depths grows with our understanding and acceptance of the Natural Depths within ourselves.
