TAKE ME HOME | UNITED STATES

http://azhumane.org

Lola arrived at the Arizona Humane Society as a youngster who was much too little to go up for adoption so she spent a few months growing in a foster home. This 3-month-old tabby cat has many talents. She’s an avid player and will effortlessly hurdle to the top of a cat condo in effort to chase after a feather wand. Inexpensive to buy for, she will play with anything she finds on the floor including wads of paper and milk caps and she struts down the hallway like a runway model with a toy in her mouth. She is also the ultimate cuddler and her thundering purr will melt your stress away after a long day. Perhaps the most beneficial talent of Lola’s is she is a wonderful massage therapist and will softly knead her paws on your back while you lie down on the couch. She is great with other playful, friendly felines, wonderful with a dog who can tolerate her pouncing on their wagging tail and sweet with kids of all ages. If Lola sounds like the purr-fect addition to your family call 602-997-7585 x1045 and ask for animal ID number A442730 or visit the Campus for Compassion located at 1521 West Dobbins Road in Phoenix. Her adoption fee is $75 and includes her spay surgery and vaccines.

STACEY BLANCHET Interview FASHION DESIGNER AT BLANCHET DESIGNS WRITER AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BY ADRIANA OANCEA

Q How do you get your design inspiration and is there something in particular that inspires you? SB I do not get inspired by a specific element, but I love being in fabric stores. That is what inspires me to create. I get all my ideas when I look at fabric that is available and online. Understanding fabric lets you decide what you can do with it. I am a very structured person, so my designs really reflect that. I like making statement pieces and doing something classic with a little bit of an edge. Q Is there a smart way to make money or save money with being a designer? SB The best answer I can give to this question is; know your market. YOU MUST know who you are selling your clothing to and what they will pay for clothing. If you don’t, you will lose a lot of money very quickly.

http://fashion-faces.com | AUG 2013 25

Q How does it all work before the clothing gets out for sale and in other words, what is the science behind opening your own clothing line? SB You can either be a custom designer doing designs for the individual when needed or, you can be the designer who goes into production and tries to get your clothing into the stores. It takes lots and lots of money or investors. Investors won’t invest unless you have capital and you can’t get capital unless you have sold. It is a hard, hard career to get into. If you decide to go into production you can either use the production houses in the United States or internationally. They are both equally hard and filled with challenges. That is such a loaded question that I tell all designers starting out, if you do not understand how a business works you won’t make it. This is a business first and foremost. You will make a lot of costly mistakes that can bury you. It is hard to know unless you know the individual and their creations. It all comes back to knowing your clients and what market you want to get into. One of the biggest mistakes a young designer makes is getting investors and not realizing that they sold your name along with taking the money. Talk with all types of designers and you will see this mistake plays out all over the place in every country. It doesn’t matter. No investor will invest their money without the name.

Stacey Blanchet is a vivid designer within our industry that so many people follow and admire. We’re honored to have interviewed such an artist, and are excited to keep following her exciting journey. Watch in our September issue for a continuation of this Designer Feature on Stacey Blanchet, and more about her dynamic career.

REFINED, GLAMOROUS & GREEN About Elizabeth St John & Her collections VISION “There’s a perception that eco-friendly generally meant fashion that was made from leftovers, so I set out to create a collection that first would be beautiful, and feminine with a clean and modern aesthetic, for a woman that wanted to feel as though they were wearing a dress fit for a movie star. My gowns would not only be stylish and chic, but they would also be produced in an environmentally responsible and conscientious way. From this vision Eco- Couture was born.” “With my Spring-Summer 2013 Collections I wanted to capture the ‘modern goddess’. Structured yet soft, Modern CONTEMPORARY, yet timeless.”

http://fashion-faces.com | AUG 2013 43

BEGINNINGS Elizabeth began designing as a child creating dresses for her dolls from her mother’s fabric scraps - and unknowingly set the foundation for her recycled and eco-focused approach to designing...In February 2010, Elizabeth launched the Elizabeth St John label with her first bridal collection at the French Embassy Couture show for DC Fashion week. She has subsequently added destination bridal, social, and most recently, children’s wear to the collection. http://fashion-faces.com | AUG 2013 45

CASSIE BROOKS - Model Interview FF All of your local Phoenix fans have been watching your career closely. Lately we have heard some great news that you are now signed with ENVY models in LA, Vegas, and NYC! It seems so many wonderful things are happening for you. Fashion Faces, as well as your fans would like to know more about you. We would love to ask you some questions to learn more. You aren’t just naturally good at it, it takes time to perfect.

50

AUG 2013

FF What is it that you like about modeling? CB At first I wasn’t sure about it because it was out of my comfort zone. I’m a very modest, shy girl. The first actual time I felt something for Modeling was the first time I stepped on to the runway. It’s such an adrenaline rush and a great feeling. That’s when I truly fell in love with Modeling. As time went on I realized that Modeling was a way to express myself. I think of it as an art. You aren’t just naturally good at it, it takes time to perfect. FF Tell us a little about your story. How did you get started? How did you get where you are today? CB Well, I got started through Phoenix Fashion Week. They trained me how to walk the runway and set up photo shoots to get me used to being in front of the camera. I got to where I’m at today by dedicating myself to this passion of mine and along the way I met so many people that have helped me get to where I am at. I never could’ve gotten here without the support of my family and friends.

http://fashion-faces.com | AUG 2013 51

FF What is some advice you would want to give to models that are just starting out? CB To all the models starting out... If you really want this, it’s going to be a very long journey. It will take dedication and hard work. I practiced my runway walk for at least 4 days a week and did trade work for years just to build my portfolio. Don’t expect it to come easy. All your hard work will pay off in the end... FF Tell us about a show or shoot that you were involved in that really stands out. CB The one fashion show that was the most painful but most intriguing would have to be the Furne One show in Scottsdale, AZ in 2011. It was just amazing to wear such an odd, beautiful gown. Then I found out it was the same dress that Katy Perry wore it in her “Wide Awake” video! Crazy, right?! FF What haven’t you done yet that you would love to do? CB I have always wanted to do a photo shoot with a huge snake! I know it’s not that crazy but I’m a huge snake lover. FF Thank you Cassie for taking the time to speak with us today. We are your biggest fan and we look forward to watching you and your adventures.

Summer is here. It is the best opportunity to wear light, soft materials; and the best opportunity to create a new persona. It is true that layers are for other seasons, but if you pick the right materials such as linen and light cottons, you will be able to wear them and create new looks. (Unless; you live in a city where it does not cool at night). Now, be daring! Wear jackets with a tanktop underneath, or perhaps nothing on. Simply let your tanned skin touch the jacket and feel sexy! The presence of prints with large geometric shapes are a plus. They have the ability to create a high contrast that will define your body proportions; so do not be afraid of mixing within the same color hue (always). Plus, you may have the effortless excuse to drop a color in to the mix to break the monotony. We picked a bright red on this ensemble. So, if you want to follow the example, use more than one element of clothing within the same color (sunglasses, shoes, a bracelet or a clasp). Your looks will shine!

AUG 2013

Do not forget that hats in all shape and sizes (except those that have fur or full heavy tweed – those are for the cold days ahead) are a must to cover your face from the excessive sun. Plus, always wear sun block, in addition to a nice lotion for moisturizing that sun-bathed skin. Bold colors are back. So, a pair of pants mixed with dark tones on jackets allow you to create space a time for that summer flower print. Perhaps a paisley print, or a geometric print to create a separation between torso and legs. Just look for a contrasting color for your belt. Oh, and if the belt has a geometric print‌Bingo! (You did right!)

Beach wear requires very light materials, as the sand gets everywhere and the sweat and body lotion makes your slimy; So opt for a see-through material, or a material that is light. In this case “mesh” is the solution, the neon color is present on body and accessory, gives that look, and that much needed “spike” to feel good and call the attention of the beach babes.

In the 60s/70s/ 80s & indeed 90s, ‘Street Style’ ruled, drove, innovated and inspired! Everything that was cool arty and happening, would filter up from the streets & clubs, from deep down in the cool arty underground subculture, where tomorrow happens yesterday! And the future of fashion, art, design, and certainly music, was being created and invented! What happened deep down below! Would eventually filter through in a stylized and deodorized form, castrated and denuded of its ‘edge’ and become mainstream fashion! Although, for the hip young gunslingers and movers and shakers who invented it, by the time it went above the radar, and became ‘fashion’ it was over! At the beginning of the 80s the most important and influential style magazine that ever existed, hit the streets! This was THE FACE! Not only was this a revolution in style and coolness, but equally a revolution in art, design, and ‘attitude’! With Neville Brody’s brilliant and inspired take on Futurist Graphic/Design, and Ray Petri’s genius for styling, making every other magazine in the world looking tired and dated! Neville & Ray’s style was, of course copied and plagiarized to death, and indeed still is! Equally THE FACE, always had great writers and articles, lambasting mediocrity, pushing the fresh innovative and cool, and turning writing into intelligent, edgy ‘Pop-Cultural-Philosophy’!

116

AUG 2013

Attitude’ of course was everything then! The key ‘buzz word’ that either had you ‘on the guest list of style’ or, outside, not invited to the party! The club scene (where looks, attitude & style were born) also reflected this! Indeed in the really ‘cool hip & happening’ clubs of London or NYC (and by the way Studio 54 was never considered cool!). You got in (or not) on the strength of ‘your look/ attitude’! The criteria was how ‘cool and arty’ you were, not how famous! Indeed 99% of today’s celebs, faces and ‘fashionistas’ indeed practically all those who inhabit the current fashion and music industry would not have made it through the door! So what does this say about the current state of the fashion industry? Well it says that the ‘Street Style Subculture’ (which certainly still exists) is entirely ignored by the fashion industry and most of the media! And that innovative graphic/layout art directors like Neville Brody! And brilliant innovative and inspired stylists like the late great ‘Ray Petri’ are either not there! Or (and more accurately) the real ‘Hip Young Gunslingers Of Style’, are not being hired, because they are too threatening and don’t ‘fit in’!

STYLE GURU | UNITED KINGDOM

click to play trax / buy on i-Tunes Rather than reading the real ‘Codes Signs & Signals’! A loud shiny flashy artless and vulgar, uniformity of choice, and ‘aggressive normality’! Where all is (and must be) ‘applied from above’ as a ‘campaign, marketing strategy or ‘trend’! Where ‘professionalism’ has become the enemy of ideas! And the genuinely cool arty and innovative stuff, that exists down below ‘in the street subculture’! Must not be allowed to surface up, because it is far too troublesome and anarchic, and cannot be branded or commodified! Therefore the very thing that could save and re-invent the fashion industry (and music industry) is already dead on arrival! An excellent new exhibition at London’s V&A ‘From Club To Catwalk’ focuses on the 80s! And shows how good it can be, when talent and ideas, rather than marketing lead!
