President Message

Result is never the end,

but a new beginning! Dear Readers,

D

“Big results require big ambitions, not big scores.”

AV United started a year ago as an initiative and has now crossed geographical boundaries to become a revolution. This is a one-stop platform to reunite the entire DAV family under one umbrella, where they can share their experiences and build stronger relationships. I congratulate the team for achieving this milestone and welcome the new readers aboard. I am filled with overwhelming pride as I declare that our students have shown a remarkable performance in the 2014 CBSE Board Examination. Heartiest congratulations to all DAV students who have excelled and passed with flying colours. Students, this result is not symbolic only of ‘your’ hard work, but also of several other stake holders’ persistence, who have been your pillars of strength in the testing times. I would, therefore, like to extend the congratulations to all parents, teachers and principals also, who have been a part of this journey with the students. All parents, teachers and principals have shown utmost degree of sincerity and care towards our children, as a result of which DAVians have outshone their contemporaries. Students, there is only one topper, but that does not in any way imply that the rest are not worthy enough. Every race, every competition, will always have a sole winner. But for me, all those who participate automatically win. They win over their fear, hesitation and indifference. After the results, many of you may have been disappointed by your performance. I say, don’t be, because of two reasons. First, because marks are not the only indicator of a person’s calibre and second, every disappointed result will be an encouragement for you to work harder the next time. You must always strive to set challenges for yourself. Give yourself targets to accomplish and be your own competition. But the crux of the matter remains, that it is not important to win every competition, what matters is to make your presence felt. We all are born with a purpose to achieve in life. It is time that we identify it and prepare ourselves for battles more crucial than marks on that mark sheet. It is time we unleash our potent talents and let the world know our mettle. Om Shanti!

Third Principle of Arya Samaj

Reveals the power of vedas Swami Dayanand had set himself upon the mission of reviving the Vedic culture. The principles on which he founded the Arya Samaj were a direct reflection of his ardent belief in the vedic scriptures. The third principle of Arya Samaj states: “Ved sab satya vidyaon ki pustak hai, Ved ka padhana-padhaana aur sunana-sunaana sab Aryon ka param dharm hai”

T

he Vedas are scriptures of all true (satya) knowledge. It is the paramount duty of all Aryas to read them, hear them being read and recite them to others. Believed to have been directly revealed through cosmic sounds (shruti), the Vedas are the most ancient scriptures of the humanity and are said to be the source of all true knowledge. They were heard by four Rishis namely Agni, Vaayu, Angiraa, and Aditya who passed on this wisdom to their disciples. The third principle of Arya Samaj reminds us of our duty towards spreading the word of Vedas to all mankind. The Arya Samaj believes that Vedas are the breath of God, the truth revealed by the God for humanity. To spread this knowledge is the prime duty of every Arya.

Astonishing fact! ‘The Hindu Revelation (Veda) is all revelations, the only one whose ideas are in perfect harmony with Modern Science, as it proclaims the slow and gradual formation of the world.’ -by Dr. Jekreliot

12/ May-june 2014

Beyond Time and Space The concept of Vedas gives most of us a primitive ring and a connotation of their irrelevance in modern times. These have been reduced to mere symbols of erudition and respectability. However, if we shed our notion of antiquity attached to them, we will be enlightened with the fact of how these ancient teachings, dating back to the dawn of this universe, are congruent in one’s current life too. They pervade all time and space and are applicable to the modern day living. They help build moral integrity and direct mankind towards the path of social and economic prosperity. The Vedas address all aspects of existence through Dharma, the natural laws that uphold the universe. Contrary to the belief of many, the Vedas are not a religion in its conservative sense rather a way of living. The invocations prescribed are to the five elements of nature – the sun, the water, the wind, the fire and the air. The practices preached are in consonance with these elements so as to maintain a healthy balance with the nature. The Vedas contain codes of righteous conduct in personal and in social life. The righteous elements such as patience, forgiveness, cleanliness, truthfulness, and many more are such virtues which the humans try to achieve throughout their lives without compromising on their notion of modernity. They never become redundant and are taught by every religion in every part of the world. Recognition from the World The relevance of ancient Vedic values has not been covered by the West either. German scholar Max Muller, came to India and studied the treasures of Vedic wisdom. He devoted

Through their strict regimen and adherence to punctuality, they inculcated a sense of discipline in me.”

Reliving memories of DAV “We had Prof. Shambhunath who used to teach us history. Our principal, Mr. Ganju, was very nice. I enjoyed a good rapport with my teachers because they were very straight-forward in their approach. I had also got a beating few times. They really worked hard on students. That was the best aspect. There is one occasion I remember in particular when I stood first in Hindi and I was to be awarded on the annual day. But I was a shy boy those days. When they announced the prize, I did not go to collect it and hid in the bathroom, instead. So, that is one moment I fondly remember.”

The ground was so huge that all sports – cricket, football, and hockeycould be easily played. I was a naughty child and not too academically inclined but cricket itself became the biggest teacher, the biggest education in my life. And yes, there was a group of teachers always promoting and encouraging me. The exposure and opportunity that I received there paved the way for my career.”

Kapil Dev on Education and Sports “In India there is an over emphasis on marks and degrees– sadly at the cost of sports. I strongly feel that this should change. It is critical to respect and promote the innate talent of an individual. I want to tell all the parents and teachers– take the pressure off children, let them blossom. Focus not on marks, but on character. It is something which will take them far in life. Remember, a good human being will be successful. If I were to get into the education line, I would ensure that each school has less of building and more of playground. I was fortunate to go to one such school and what a difference it made to my life.”

Amrish Puri back to DAV “Jinda hoon is tarah ki ghame-zindagi nahin, jalta hua diya hoon magar roshni nahin.” Amrish Puri sung this song on a nostalgic visit to his college in 1995. Amrish Puri alias Mogambo, did his FSc in 1951 from DAV College, Hoshiarpur. “He called me up at 1:30 in the morning from Hyderabad in January 1995 to confirm that he was coming as the chief guest for the annual prize distribution function which was to be held three days later,” recalled D.L. Anand, retired principal of DAV College. Amrish had come to attend the function with his wife. “I had sent an old photograph of some students to Puri to confirm whether it was he who was standing in the group picture. When he affirmed, I requested him to be the chief guest as he had been a student of this college,” said Anand. Amrish Puri recalled having made some portraits and sketches of great scientists that were framed and put up in the chemistry lab. Admirer Shivender Madan, an NRI who met Puri at Maurya Sheraton in Delhi, remembers Mogambo telling him that he knew each and every place in Hoshiarpur from where he could get ‘golgappas’ and ‘alu tikkis’. “Amrish, who stayed in the DAV Boys’ hostel in room number 36, could place his room during his visit to the college,” said Janmit Singh, principal of the college. As this reporter clicked a picture of the hostel, a young boy pointing a finger towards the hostel, said, “Mogambo mere room wich rehnda si.”

}Believe me, I felt so happy that I am being remembered by the principal of my college. Our then principal was Late Pt. Ralla Ram, sitting in the center of the photograph. I did not know then what place I was going to reach in my life. Forty-four years have passed and so have I passed through different phases of life. I remember having performed plays on stage in our college. I was just OK in studies.~ -Amrish Puri

(Excerpt from a letter which Amrish Puri wrote to Principal AnandJi regarding the Annual Function in DAV College)

Though the man has left us, his huge body of work still leaves the viewers enthralled in their seats. DAV is fortunate to have had such a precious alumnus, who was both grand and influential in his personality. To the ever-lasting legacy of the immortal Mogambo, the entire family of DAV pays its humble tribute!

(ICAI) which was established by the Parliament under the Chartered Accountants Act of 1949. Since then, the term Chartered Accountant has been used in place of Indian Registered Accountant. Prior to 1949, Restricted State Auditors were registered with the respective princely states and British provincial State Governments. However, now, the Restricted State Auditors have become redundant. As of April 2011, ICAI had more than 170,000 registered members. It is the second largest body of professional accountants in the world after AICPA.

Origin of Chartered Accountancy Chartered Accountants were the first accountants to form a professional body, initially established in Britain in 1854. The Edinburgh Society of Accountants (formed 1854), the Glasgow Institute of Accountants and Actuaries (1854) and the Aberdeen Society of Accountants (1867) were each granted a royal charter from their inception. The title is an internationally recognised professional designation. In India, the profession of chartered accountancy is regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India

Mridu Garg,

Alumna of Hansraj College, Delhi was the 2nd Rank Holder in CA Final Exams, November 2013 Why did you choose CA as your career? Mridu - After 12th standard, I was really confused as to what I had to do, but then I thought that yes probably, accounting and auditing have that exposure because you have ample number of clients to work with so you get diverse kinds of experience. How did you prepare for exams? Mridu - After my articleship, I got four months of leave. So I made a time table for myself and a schedule of how long would I take for each subject. I used to study 10 hours a day, but never compromised with my sleep. I would say 8 hours of sleep is really important plus giving yourselves small breaks when you are studying. The CA institute’s practice materials, RTPs and the mock tests had been a big help. Any suggestions for your juniors? Mridu - Studying regularly is the key to success. Staying focused, being regular and being honest to oneself is important because you need to know where you stand and that’s how you can improve on what you are doing. Source: www.caclubindia.com

Opportunities beyond Books

Now, learning is a

PLAY-thing!

Classroom learning is being combined with theatre to invoke not only creativity, participation and interaction but also a whole new personality. Theatre in Education (TiE) is as interesting as it sounds. Have you tried it yet?

T

he biggest problem of Avinash’s life was memorising lengthy answers and remembering events. Hence, history was one subject he loathed. He often questioned how stories of the past would ever effect his present or future but couldn’t quite understand the significance of the subject. When exams came, he forced himself to secure enough marks as required not to fail. The next term, however, brought a solution to his problem. In a 15-day theatre workshop at his school, he got to play the role of Muhammad-binTughlaq, the medieval ruler famous for the blunders he had done in his reign. While training and performing for the role, Avinash felt the historical character closely and experienced the chapters of his book on the stage. What he once hated now became a subject that he

48/ May-june 2014

loved. Through theatre, history had affected both, his present and future.

Text+Theatre = Quick and Better Learning

Classroom learning has been conventionally about text books and notes. Students read and try to remember– the usual policy followed everywhere. What Edison and Einstein said became facts but actual understanding was gained only through observation and experiments. In recent years, theatre has come up as a supplement to text-driven education. Like dance, singing and sports, this activity is more than just a means of expressing oneself. Theatre with text is better referred to as ‘Theatre in Education’ which has been taken up by special ‘TiE Companies’ which are working with both children and adults

to create a new educative environment infused with entertaining drama. Concept and Purpose TiE started as a separate skill form and informative movement at the Belgrade Show Business in 1965. An alliance comprising of performers, instructors and social employees were brought together to generate a community outreach team. TiE is part of ‘Applied Drama’– an umbrella term for the use of drama practised in a specific social context or environment. In simple words, Theatre in Education aims to promote the understanding of social issues and prescribed syllabi for classroom-learning by involving both students and adults in performance-based shows. It is also referred to as Drama in Education (DiE) in the US.

Opportunities beyond Books Numerous Roles and Numerous Lessons

TiE helps the participants in a lot of ways. It teaches them: To communicate effectively The parent-teacher-student interaction becomes stronger through rapport-building and constant communication– the two essentials of drama.  To better their body language Exercises help participants observe their body movements and work on the body language.

Theatre Education  Refers to the study of theatre as a subject or course of study. Theatre Studies has been introduced as an elective subject in CBSE.  Involves a theory paper and case studies of famous theatre personalities.

Theatre in Education  Refers to understanding various social issues and theoretical lessons with the help of performative arts.  Involves conducting of workshops and staging of shows with both students and teachers as characters in the play.

TiE Organisations in India Today, a lot of theatre companies are successfully furthering this concept. Two of them are mentioned below:Theatre in Education Company / Sanskar Rang Toli of NSD Established on 16th October, 1989 under the aegis of National School of Drama (NSD), this company consists of a group of actor-teachers working with and performing for children. The major thrust of their plays is to create an atmosphere to encourage children, to raise questions, make decisions and choices with an awareness of themselves within larger society. With more than 800 performances of 26 plays in Delhi and other parts of the country, more than 5.5 lakh people have witnessed these plays.

Yellowcat Theatre Company Yellowcat began with a small group of people passionate about the possibilities of Theatre in Education. Founded in 2005 and based in Delhi, the company initially organised performances only for the young children. However, with gradual popularity, they extended their work to address teachers and parents as well. Sukesh Arora, founder of YTC, says the aim of the company is to transact part of the curriculum through dramatic means.

 To think creatively In the role of a director or script-writer, participants get to push the creative wheels of their minds and try to think in different ways.  Team spirit and leadership qualities Even as a helper backstage or props manager, participants lead their respective departments and work cohesively in a team.  Technical know-how Be it handling lights or the sounds section, participants acquaint themselves with the technical knowledge as well.  Life skills training providing them with an emotional outlet Participants share their personal stories and find ways of managing their problems.  Ability to empathise Acting as someone else gives one the ability to empathise. So, to feel as to what it is to be a beggar, or a housewife, diverse roles give equally diverse insights into human nature.

Lessons in the Dark

Ferrari ki Sawaari

You can’t resist this joyride! Ferrari ki Sawaari, a Vidhu Vinod Chopra production, is a story of rooting for your dreams, of an emotional father-son relationship, and of moral lessons that every middle class person is coated with. This good versus evil story that ends up in a magical triumph will leave you happy and teary. where the father-son duo is literally flying in the Ferrari!

Ferrari ki Sawaari revolves around an ordinary Parsi Mumbaikar, Rustum (Sharman Joshi), his cranky father (Boman Irani) and his incredibly talented son- Kayo Deboo (Ritwik Sahore). Rustum is a clerk who travels on an old scooter, does not own a mobile phone and is a sincere law abiding citizen. Extraordinary dreams of the common man It is this morally gripped man, who is caught in a lot of tricky situations, only to make his son’s dream come true. What does Kayo dream of? To be the next Sachin Tendulkar! The narrative hits a steep turn, when Kayo gets selected for a special camp at the Lord’s (England) for which he needs to deposit a huge sum of money. A wedding planner thinks Rustum can use his ‘cricket connections’ to borrow Sachin’s

Red Ferrari for a wedding, for which she will pay him a handsome amount. Now in real life this may sound absurd, but in reel life this is pretty much possible and for Rustum it does happen. Rustum drives off in Sachin’s Ferrari parked in the garage, while the guards are away and takes his excited son on a ride around Mumbai on the hot wheels, followed by a dream-sequence like song

Kayo’s journey to the Lord’s Rustum fights financial crisis and dirty politics to make his son walk the turf of the Lord’s Cricket Ground. This Vidhu Vinod Chopra script is the perfect epitome of good versus evil, just like the Munna Bhai series. Actor Sharman Joshi convincingly plays the most amazing father in the world. The grumpy grandpa also joins the force in the end with Rustum and Kayo and they successfully send Kayo to England. As the overwhelmed father watches his son on TV, the whole neighbourhood cheers on the street for the young champion.

Lesson from the movie Every dream has a mission to achieve and the passion must always be kept ignited through the belief in your dreams. There is no harm to dream the impossible, but you can’t expect it to happen on its own. Illegal or smart means may take you down the road for a while, but only those who believe in the conviction of truth and hard work shall reach the milestone. Only brave minds can dream big and strong arms can hold the victory cup.

DNA of Leadership

Even BIG B never messes with

‘Punctuality’! Read on to know why punctuality is so important.

Punctuality creates Personality ‘How does it matter if one is 10 minutes late for a meeting?’ ‘Or, won’t it be better if I go half an hour post dinner-time and pretend to make a grand entrance?’ ‘It would be better if we go there a little late. Who comes on time, anyway?’ So many of us are seen asking and saying such things, making ‘being late’ more a required and acceptable norm rather than something to avoid. Let’s cross out the two terms ‘required’ and ‘acceptable’ at the outset. Thinking that ‘being late’

54/ May-june 2014

is ‘required’ assuming everybody else is going to be late, does not make any sense. Also, thinking that it will be ‘acceptable’ is another wrong notion to get rid of. Your disregard for time can only be tolerated, that too in not all the cases, not accepted. Above all, to be labelled ‘being late’ creates a major dent in your personality, a flaw and a bad influence. Below are listed few of the unfavourable perceptions the delaymakers might create.

Amitabh Bachchan recently ran across the street, when his car got stuck in traffic, to reach event venue on time.

Lack of value Wasting time in making someone wait or reaching late for an event shows that you value neither others nor yourself enough. That doesn’t fare well for someone striving to be a leader, does it?

Be a perfect time-keeper Apart from Mr. Bachchan, many celebrities like Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra, Anoushka Sharma and the Devgans are appreciated for being good time-managers. As a leader, climbing to the top demands sincere adherence to the rules of time. As the cliché goes, time is money and, punctuality is the best way of spending it. When you spend it well, you get better returns.

III IIIIIIII

III

Lack of integrity You said you’ll reach by 10:00, but at 9:00 itself you know that you won’t make it. Will you or will you not inform the one waiting for you of the delay? Many don’t but you should. Integrity is a direct result of strict punctuality.

II II

II

Incompetence To be on time demands to be accommodating of any obstacles and keeping in mind the factors which could probably cause delay. If one fails to even consider the possibility of heavy traffic, it forebodes incompetence in other areas as well.

We all have it, yet we don’t! Time is a common gift to all of us. Whoever is a part of this world, he/she has got time in equal measure – 60min/hour, 24hours/day and 365 days/year. Isn’t it? Therefore, punctuality as a virtue should also come naturally to all of us. But still time is never enough for any of us. While some make the most of it, others waste it away in unproductive things. Besides arriving at a place at the right time, we should also take right actions at the right time. Utilising time fruitfully is one of the main components of punctuality. From rags to riches or vice-versa, one’s fate is very much dependent on how one chooses to spend the available time.

I II

I III

II

Lack of control Lacking respect for one’s time means lacking control over one’s life. This further leads to inability to manage organisation related activities.

II

Some simple things that might help :1. Set all your watches and clocks to the same accurate time, a few minutes early even. 2. Don’t hit the snooze button. Wake up! 3. Leave early and always have a back-up plan. 4. Prepare a log for every day, listing everything you have to do and at what time. 5. Examine and calculate the time you spend in routine activities. 6. Make a note of where your time is getting wasted. 7. Go to sleep on time.

Are these stereotypes true? 1. Industrialised nations, especially North America, Northern Europe and Japan are known to be sticklers for punctuality. 2. On the other hand, people of Latin America, India, Southern Europe, Africa and the middle-east are known to be poor time-keepers.

Success Mantra

Playing to Conquer and Become Better Here are listed the five prominent things Cricket helps in inculcating within oneself. Perseverance– Want to be the best at what you do? Persevere with patience and dedication.

Satya Nadella

A

name that has brought enormous glory and pride to India by adorning the post of the CEO of the world’s biggest tech giant – Microsoft. This big-shot attributes his rise and success to cricket. Yes, an expert in computer science with a degree of Business Administration from the University of Chicago learnt the biggest lesson of his life from the game of cricket. “I think playing cricket taught me more about working in teams and leadership that has stayed with me throughout my career”, said the famous man. Have you too ever learned anything in one of your several gully matches? Or something that your school coach said and touched your heart? The next time you are on to that field, remember to take in as much of the game as possible. Satya Nadella pointed out at ‘working in teams and leadership’the first lesson cricket teaches. Having spent more than 20 years of his life at the Resmond based firm, Satya has surely realised the power and potential of a well-coordinated and well-led team.

Confidence– How did it feel to have a hat trick of wickets in just one game? Shots of confidence are essential to better both, one’s performance and personality. Comebacks– Had a low phase lately? But, it is never too late to begin afresh and regain all your vigour. Cricket surely teaches one how to do that! Consistency– Winning once

might not be hard, but winning always demands consistency. Learn it from the game that grants success only if one is consistently good.

Passion– What makes you feel alive and energetic? Being passionate about something is living life in real terms. Are you alive?

Players’ love... Kumble bowls with a broken jaw Cited as one of the most inspiring and bravest events of cricket, ace bowler Anil Kumble’s appearance at the August 2002 test series itself spoke for the enormous passion he held for the game. With a bandaged face and a broken jaw, Kumble sent down 14 consecutive overs and became the first bowler to dismiss Brian Lara in that condition. “It was one of the bravest things I’ve seen on the field of play.”, said Sir Vivian Richards later. Indeed. And what was Kumble’s statement– “I didn’t want to sit around.” Passion and commitment enable one to give their best even at their worst.

M.S. Dhoni and his art of controlling mind Dhoni has often been hailed as a brilliant captain. But, his most remarkable trait has been to stay calm and composed even in the tensest moments. “I’m a believer in the fact that your emotions are yours alone and hence you should be the one who knows how to control them. Over time, I found dealing with emotions easier. I feel it is important because in a game, there are so many stages where you don’t want to take a decision emotionally. Practically, you decide what the best option is.” In other words, be it the field or your exam, always keep calm.

Nadella played cricket as part of the Hyderabad Public School Team. An innate desire to build things led him to pursue a course in computer science and then two other degrees. According to him, the one thing that defines him is his love to learn and he’s been rallying his team at Microsoft with the same spirit. Having deep admiration for those that come up with creative ideas, he believes that the industry respects innovation, not tradition. Dedicated to taking Microsoft to even greater heights, Satya Nadella is going to use many cricket lessons in his climb upwards. Are you?

Sunil Gavaskar and the second aspect of success Once someone asked why India has produced only one Sunil Gavaskar, one Sachin, and one Kapil Dev. Sunil’s response was revealing. First he went on to mention names of several other outstanding Indian cricketers and said they are as good. Next he said these stars, including himself, could not have been successful without the support of the ten other players in the team. He went on to reveal the second aspect of success. He said for every star, their second season is the most testing. By this time, their game has been analysed by the rivals, so they have a different level of challenge. And it requires an excellent family support system, he said, to keep your feet on the ground with all the adulation and attention you have started receiving. So, never be complacent if your first performance was good. Be consistent and humble.

“I feel when somebody has been playing cricket for a long time, he creates a separate identity for himself.” – Sachin Tendulkar “The face of the team is the people who are playing on the cricket field. The team is not about one individual.” – Gautam Gambhir “My approach to cricket has been reasonably simple: it was about giving everything to the team, it was about playing with dignity and it was about upholding the spirit of the game.” – Rahul Dravid

Book Review

Captain Cool The M.S. Dhoni Story Everyone talks about M.S. Dhoni’s spectacular rise but few have spent time classifying his journey as a struggle, the way veteran sports journalist Gulu Ezekiel has done. The 2013 updated version of his book Captain Cool: The M.S. Dhoni Story is a must-have for die-hard fans of Dhoni and Indian cricket. Gulu presents the book in a different manner as a match report not just a narration of story, thereby breaking the stereotype style of writing biographies. It is Dhoni’s top-speed journey from fields of Ranchi to international stadiums. Early life: Not a child prodigy Mahendra Singh Dhoni, born on 7th July, 1981 is an Indian cricketer and the current captain of Indian national cricket team and Chennai Super Kings IPL team. It took four years for him to transform from a small town boy into an icon of Indian sports. Dhoni was no child prodigy, no overnight success. He made his international debut at the age of 23, mature by Indian cricket standards, and with five grinding years of domestic cricket behind him. Since he received no formal training during his formative years, Dhoni’s rough-and-tough ways never ironed out of his system. And there lies his appeal, and that is what attracts the crowds. Here is a leader–India’s captain in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 cricket since 2007–who makes bold decisions and carries them forward. Gulu’s Version of the ‘Captain Cool’ Gulu starts with a neat cover-drive: “Dhoni is arguably the most radical and influential cricketer since the emergence of Kapil Dev in the late 70s. The positive impact he has had on Indian cricket – and on aspiring youth – is the modern-day version of a fairy-tale.” Under Dhoni’s captaincy India became the first team after a gap of more than

20 years to whitewash Australia in a Test series. Dhoni also led the Indian team to the number one position in ICC rankings in Test cricket for the first time. Under his captaincy, India won the 2007 ICC World Cup Twenty20, 2011 World Cup. His Test, ODI record is best among all the Indian captains till date.

Insights from the biography:

♦ The book is peppered with interesting nuggets like: “Dhoni developed a unique technique by playing with a tennis ball on 18-yard pitches in Kharagpur, where he moved in 2001 for his first job as a railway ticket collector. On these pitches, bowlers consistently bowled yorkers and Dhoni had to learn to use his shoulders and forearms to dig the ball out—a skill that helps him today.” ♦ Captain Cool springs to life when India under Dhoni wins the Twenty20 World Cup in September 2007, months after the agonizing World Cup debacle in the West Indies under Dravid. “The humiliation, anguish of six months had suddenly been swept aside”, writes Gulu. ♦ There is an interesting chapter – ‘Warts and All’ on India’s controversial tour of Australia in 2007-08. It ends on a high note as under Dhoni India defeats champions Australia by 2-0 in the Commonwealth Bank Tri-Nation ODI series. ♦ The book is enriched further by attractive colour pictures. The pen picture of Dhoni by Gulu is even sharper. “His long hair, with red tints peeping out from under the helmet and glinting under the sun, gave a macho, rock-star-like aura to his batting.”

About the Author Gulu Ezekiel has worked as a sports journalist with various publications such as the Indian Express in Chennai, the Asian Age and the Financial Express in New Delhi and NDTV. He has contributed to more than fifty publications in India and around the world. Gulu is the author of several sports books including: The A To Z of Sachin Tendulkar (2006), The Story of World Cup Cricket (1999) and The Story of World Cup Cricket (1996).

Parenting

handle All results like a

winner

Results day! Even more dreadful day than the examination times itself. Parents and children both wait for the results with a baited breath; it is a culmination of their parenting. Would you be able to say proudly to everyone about your child’s performance or would you avoid phone calls? The anxiety called examination results Right now there would be two contrasting environments in various households. From elation to aggression against children, based on what they scored. For children it is about– would they get the promised ‘prizes’ or would they be subjected to a week of rigorous ‘counseling’ by parents, relatives, friends’ parents, tuition center coordinators, teachers and principal? How they would be told that they have potential, they are intelligent and it is only if they could concentrate more and manage their time well, it will help them fetch better scores. It is déjà vu for a lot of children. Going through this process year

60/ May-june 2014

on year and yet not being able to break the trend. For parents whose children have scored exceptionally well may think this article is not applicable to them. I would say that this is more applicable for them as we need to create a new perspective of examination and results which would support them and their children in the long run. First let’s look at the whole concept and the purpose of examination and then examine the ecstasy and the travails of marks. EXAM– the most dreadful four-letter word! Even before we grew up to realize what a ‘four-letter word’ means – this four-letter word ‘Exam’ had more impact on our mental,

Parenting

physical and emotional state than any other four-letter word in the world. The stress of examination has only increased. The number of suicides because of examination or stress of education are only increasing year by year. Depression, psychological disorders, stress, BP; and diabetes during childhood– it is all increasing. The educational thinkers of our times thought they had cracked the ‘examination stress’ code by inventing the CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation). A system which would take away the load of measuring only the academic excellence and bring children, who are not academically ‘gifted’, some relief. Great thought! “I failed in some subject Sadly from thoughts in exam, but my friend to action the entire passed in all. Now he is context has been lost! Now we have an engineer in Microsoft started measuring and I am the owner of children on all Microsoft” -Bill Gates aspects– values, participation, selfconfidence, appearance, projects, sports, etc., and again the only measure we have is ‘marks’ and promotion to the next grade based on the marks. What goes wrong again is that these aspects which are supposed to be the ASSESSMENT TOOLS – have become the end, measuring HOW WELL the child has DONE! And that brings about a closure to the good intention and thought behind CCE. Come examinations– actually doesn’t matter if you call them Unit tests, 1st term examination, Mid term examination, Half-yearly or SA (Summative Assessment) – it is the same old story or rather old story with fresh new punches. “It’s a competitive world out there!”; “You need to be the best”; “You have the potential, if only you could concentrate/ work a bit harder”; “You are taking this too lightly”;…… These communications start with children from Class II onwards! No sports, no TV, no parties, no movies, no outings.. the list of these restrictions is endless. Examination-the paradigm shift Exam is just a process to measure yourself against where you yourself are and where you want to be! PERIOD – it is not about the other person faring better or worse. It is for us to measure ourselves. The child must to

measure himself and then formulate the way forward! For instance, if a child scores 60% in the examination, the assessment tool says – the child knows 60 out of 100. Now if he wants to be at 80 or at 90 then the results can be used to chart out the future course of action. Help him assess the gaps so that the child can focus on the gaps and achieve what he wants to instead of him being adjudged a failure or ‘nalayak’. Examination is an assessment tool for the child himself and not for the teachers or parents to make a judgement on the knowledge, skills, attribute and attitude of their children. The second part of the equation: is the focus given to marks as important to life as we think it is? Remember your school days. We had our classmates scoring less than us, scoring higher than us and their position, success, fulfillment in life has no relationship with the marks they scored. They may have scored much less than us but when we meet or see them, 20 years hence, we can’t help but say “You! At this level! Doing this! I can’t believe this!” At the end if you really examine it wasn’t marks which gets us anywhere (true that it provides an opportunity) but it is our attitude, skills, confidence, selfesteem, and endurance which holds us in the long run. The way forward: 1. Let’s focus and nurture the child’s self-esteem, selfconfidence and the will to get up and face a set-back instead of telling him how ‘poor’ he is. 2. Let’s look at examination results as an assessment tool to plan out the next steps- sitting with your child to understand the gaps and plan out the future. Every day of life is a test of your endurance, ability, sensitivity, humanity, tolerance, skills; and knowledge. But what are we preparing our children for – a periodic exam at school? – Let’s make exams so routine that life and its ups and downs become just another thing to live, enjoy and move forward!!

Yoga

Shaping body and mind The ancient practice of yoga offers a multitude of benefits to modernday students at almost every grade level. Yoga, which is a combination of breath and movement can help alleviate social and academic stress, clear the mind and soothe cramped bodies jammed into books and bent over computers.

Y

oga means “union with the divine”, and was discovered almost 5000 years ago as an Indian body of knowledge. Yoga is not just about twisted poses, it is much more than that and a complete way of life. Yoga includes: gyan yoga, bhakti yoga, karma yoga and raja yoga. These forms of yoga possess different meanings in one’s life. It is said that yoga is helpful for every age group. But it definitely works wonders for adolescents. Today’s generation faces the maximum amount of pressure and stress. They are constantly preoccupied with social networking sites or the smart phones, which in turn makes them insufficient in studies. They need high level of concentration and will power to crack difficult exams. Twenty minutes of daily power yoga can help students achieve best of their capabilities. Breathing the worries outPranayama and Meditation:

Yoga is all about connecting the outer body with the inner soul. It provides peace and concentration. It is not just limited to stretching exercises but also strengthens our control over breaths and limbs. Practicing yoga with the breathing techniques is known as PRANAYAMA. Controlling and performing proper techniques of breathing can help bring more oxygen to the blood and brain, eventually helping control ‘prana’ or the vital life energy. Pranayama goes hand in hand with various asanas. Combination of these two is considered as the highest form of purification and self-discipline, indulging both mind and body. Pranayama techniques also prepare us for a deeper experience of meditation (dhyana). Dhyana comes with the control over mind and body, which comes with the proper practice of asanas with breath control. So, these three need to be in sync with each other for attaining control over mind and body.

“Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.” ~ B. K. S. Iyengar 62/ May-june 2014

Health Things to remember: ♦ Even if for a few minutes, practice yoga on a regular basis. ♦ Choose a lonely but spacious place without any disturbance or noise. ♦ Always practice yoga with an empty stomach. ♦ Yoga should not be practiced on bare floor but keep a mat or a carpet below. ♦ Clothes should be comfortable, loose, and clean. ♦ Practice when your body is most limber. ♦ The greatest and longest-lasting benefits are achieved when at least 3 or 4 yoga asanas are done every day.

Yoga benefits

Try the power-packed SURYA NAMASKAR! urya Namaskar or Sun Salutation S consists of 12 different bodily postures that ought to be performed in a particular sequence. Practicing sun salutation is beneficial for digestive system. It stretches the abdominal muscles. Regular practice helps to lose excessive belly fat and gives a flat stomach. It is the ideal exercise to cope with insomnia and related disorders. Practicing sun salutation calms the mind, thus helps in getting a sound sleep. Regular practice of sun salutation boosts endurance power. It gives vitality and strength. It also reduces the feeling of restlessness and anxiety.

Teenage problemsYoga is the solution!

De-stressed: A study published in the “International Journal of Yoga” in 2009 examined the impact of yoga on academic performance of stressed adolescents. Study found that seven weeks of practicing yoga, breathing and meditation practice reduced students’ stress levels, which resulted in better academic performance. Enhanced body image: Students often struggle with poor body image and awkwardness of movement. Regular practice of yoga asanas could give them confidence about their bodies, also the incentive and strength to refuse peer pressure to use drugs and alcohol.

Reduced conflict: Yoga may also help students to improve relations with each other, which creates a positive learning environment. Yoga may help students to manage their reactions as well as to respect the feelings and emotions of fellow students. Improved concentration: Yoga offers time for the body and mind to relax from the rigors of learning. This may help students applying themselves when studying or learning in a classroom. Students will be able to focus for longer periods and remember what they study for prolonged periods.

Students may be young, but they are not immune to stress. Family pressure, financial fears, academic performance standards, and peer groups can all take a toll on a student’s psyche and success in school. Along with counseling or rejuvenation through music or sports, try yoga and feel the change in your body and mind right from day one. If something keeps you away from diseases and also makes you stronger and sharper from the inside, then it is definitely worth giving a try. So choose your spot, start meditating today. Disclaimer- Do not perform any yoga asanas without the supervision of a trained practitioner. Performing yoga asanas in the wrong way can cause internal injuries. However, meditation does not require any such precaution. Anyone can perform it anywhere.

Widen your horizon

during summer holidays Summer schools these days act as the one-stop for all your career goals. If you are a career-oriented person, this article is a must-read for you.

S

ummer schools act as the one-stop for all your career goals. Summer schools offer you a variety of options, be it Mathematics, Economics, Biology, Accounting, Psychology, Management or any other subject. These subjects are then divided into courses. For example, Economics has Micro-economics, Macro-economics, Demand supply management, etc. Management includes International Business

66/ May-june 2014

management, Ecommerce, etc. Each such course has some assigned credits to it. The usual time period for a summer course is two months.

How the foreign summer school happened for me? The major driving force for me was the excitement to experience diversity in culture, behaviour of fellow students, faculty, campus facilities, college environment, and teaching methodology. Secondly, I knew that going to a reputed summer school would

definitely add to my resume. I found out plenty of choices to choose a summer school. I gathered information based on experience of past students, choice of subjects, duration of courses and reputation of various such options. On the basis of all these factors, I finally shortlisted four summer schools– • Harvard Summer School • Stanford Summer School • Warvick Summer School • London School of Economics Summer School

Alumni Experience My decision in the end was to opt for Harvard Summer School. Having been there, I strongly advocate my fellow students to try out this opportunity. Not only Harvard Summer School but summer schools in general. There are certain advantages inherent to summer schools that will change your life for the better: Resume builder– Having a reputed name in your CV, would prove to be very useful for you in interviews and other selection processes. Global exposure– Once you are at the summer school, you interact with students of various nationalities. It gives you global exposure. Widening up of Horizons– You gain knowledge about how things work differently in various parts of the world. In a short span of seven weeks, you end up learning about operations in seven continents. Responsibility– When you live in a completely new environment and that too by yourself, a sense of responsibility is instilled in you. You have your goals in front of you and nothing to stop you from achieving them. International contacts– You make irreplaceable contacts for the future. For example, I made friends from US, China, Norway, Brazil, Spain, Russia, South Africa and many other countries. In fact, my friend from Brazil skyped me the other day stating that he wants to start a business with me. This is what I mean by irreplaceable contacts. Knowledge– Other than the advantages mentioned above, you might actually also learn what you were studying!

I would rate my experience excellent and one that imparted different kinds of learning for personal and professional growth. I have three words to sum up about summer school– Go for it! If you have any doubts, you can email me at takshgupta@gmail.com, I’d be happy to help you. The writer is an alumnus of Kulachi Hansraj Model School 2012. Presently, Taksh is pursuing B.Com(H) from S.G.T.B Khalsa College, North Campus, University of Delhi. Taksh is studying for GMAT and plans to end up in the International School of Business.

School and College days are truly the golden period of everyone’s life. In those days, we make lots of friends but, a very few of them remain in touch while many are lost in the journey of pursuit of success. In the rigmarole of professional life, we often miss our school and college friends and even find it difficult to reconnect with them even to say a simple ‘Hi’. In the lives of such people, Alumni Silver Jubilee Reunions can prove to be the turning point. But can a get-together with old schoolmates really make an impact of such intensity? Yes. Read on to know how.

68/ May-june 2014

Alumni Silver Jubilee Reunions Time to ENJOY with your REAL FRIENDS!

Alumni Hub

School Friends vs. Professional Colleagues After 25 years of academics, working tirelessly, settling your career and even raising a family, one day you introspect and realise that you do not really have friends who can be your confidants, the people with whom you can just be yourself without having to worry about your image. All you have are ‘acquaintances’ that you gather over your professional life. These are the people with whom you would put your best foot forward, often with pretence. You would not risk saying something that would portray you as insensible or immature.

Battling the ‘Mid-life vacuum’ The typical school leaving age is 18 years and college is 21 years. Fast forward 20 years and you hit your forties. You made a career, churned money, your kids are all grown up and venturing into different things independently. While you on the other hand, have time for yourself, are not looking to experiment with work and want to stretch out a bit. And thanks to the scenario of Indian families growing apart, you do not even have lots of cousins by your side with whom you can have a good time. In fact the bottom line remains that you have no ‘real’ friends and you are totally idle when not working. This is more so the case of women who are homemakers. They are ones who feel this ‘Mid-life vacuum’ the most and go through an existentialism crisis. And one ends up craving for actual friends. If only you could meet your school friends and relive those stress-free days again. Thanks to science and technology, it is possible! A decade back, it was not even possible to locate school and college mates, but now thanks to social media platforms like Facebook, Whatsapp, Google+, LinkedIn, School’s website and Alumni Networks, if one makes a little effort it is possible to reconnect and trace all your batchmates. But the virtual reconnection is not as powerful as the real meeting and organising a silver reunion of the entire batch can be the BIG MOMENT which can turn it all around.

Silver Jubilee Reunion Highlights ♦ Starry night ♦ Get–together of entire batch and teachers ♦ Everyone dressed to the nines ♦ A grand curtain raiser to the reunion ♦ Speeches ♦ Emotional thanksgiving ♦ Sumptuous menu ♦ The joy of sharing a drink with your classmate ♦ Distributing merchandises ♦ Whatsapp groups

Silver Jubilee Reunion – Once in a lifetime moment

Can it work in India? YES! The culture of holding Silver Jubilee Reunions is a success world over. And it is very much possible in India too. Who loves socialising more than Indians? Even though the potential of this phenomenon is yet to be tapped fully in India, however, premier universities and schools are slowly venturing into different alumni centered activities like mentorship, reunions etc.

If the people who had passed out from school 25 years ago, get an opportunity to attend a reunion gala and meet all their schoolmates, how wonderful would that be. Surely this would be an event nobody will miss. People will travel states and countries to be a part of this moment, a moment which comes only in 25 years. An alumni gathering, a stellar constellation of Chairmen, Managing Directors, COOs, CEOs, CTOs, CIOs, Scientists, Presidents and Vice Presidents, Techies, Entrepreneurs, Media Moguls, Realtors, Academicians, Vice Chancellors, Professors and Consultants. Each one of them undoubtedly will be a dreamer, performer, achiever and a leader in society. Irrespective of wherever they come from and whatever their life journey had taken them to, there will be one thing they all still have in common and that would be the countless memories of school days.

Silver Jubilee Alumni Reunions – A global phenomenon

Silver Jubilee Reunions is NOT merely a ‘concept’ I am proposing. It is a reality in most parts of the western world. Reunion of old batches is a common and famous phenomenon in the schools and universities, around the world. People whole-heartedly accept the invitations and participate in the programs for not just recreational and educational purposes but also to expand their professional networks. Alumni Associations are active groups in foreign universities and also maintain funds wherein the alumni members can contribute for the development of their alma mater. These associations help alumni connect with their alma mater and batch mates through regular reunions and jubilee celebrations.
