MANIFESTO

THE CURRENT FLAW IN CITY DESIGN The city is unafforadble for young professionals and there is a lack of adequate housing for expanding families. Making matters worse, the city cannot provide enough services and accessbility to boomers who are now retiring. Seniors currently hold majority of the wealth in the world so the approach to city-building the last several years, which is primarily focused on favouring the future generation, is deeply flawed for everyone else. The pandemic has brought this revelation further into light: the reason people sacrifice the comfort of familial support or spacious homes in the suburbs to move to the downtown core is affordability, accessibility to amenities, and employment opportunities. However, they now find themselves trapped between the four walls of shoe-box condos, craving human interaction. Overall, there is not only a shortage of livable homes, but also retirement homes, afforable health and child care, employment, and uncrowded open spaces... we officially have a crisis at hand!

MANIFESTO

INTERGENERATIONAL DESIGN We believe the solution to this crisis is the incorporation of intergenerationlity in city design. There is a gap between the needs of a growing city and the needs of its people. We aim to create harmony among these two inevitable factors- the increase in density and an everaging population. This will benefit not only the massive amount of seniors we need to care for, but the future generation through time. We present: THE SLOW / FAST, CITY / VILLAGE where all can age in-place while engaging in every benefit a city offers. Design for the young and you exclude the old Design for the old and you include everyone - Bernard Issacs, Geriatrician

City of Toronto, Seniors Strategy 2.0, 2018

...essentially, the reversal of young-professional focused design to senior-focused, which would automatically include everyone else :)

OVERLAY MAPS & POLICIES: SENIOR POPULATIONS

Where are seniors located? The City of Toronto recognizes the importance of addressing the climbing number of seniors and adapting the city to their needs, particularly those in isolation Action needed in: Housing, health (mental and physical), transportation, employment and income, and access to information

OVERLAY MAPS & POLICIES: EMPLOYMENT LANDS

According to the seniors strategy, a significant amount of seniors are still working past the age of 65 or looking for work: “Half of all seniors have incomes from $10K-30K, just above the low income cut-off line, remaining economically vulnerable, espcially in the case of health issues, loss of a partner, and continually rising costs of living” Employment opportunities is a factor that many Torontonians are in need of

SLIDE 6 | OVERLAY MAPS & POLICIES

OVERLAY MAPS & POLICIES: OPEN SPACES

Seniors love to garden, and greenery is generally known to relieve stress Urban agricultural lands are rented out by the city and high in demand There are currently 12 Outdoor Allotment Gardens (seasonal, little limits in construction) and 1 Indoor Allotment Garden (year round, can grow more variety, higher maintenance costs) Hydro corridors allow for outdoor allotment and community gardens, so there is benefit in creating more
