I found out about Farnborough through an open event at school. I met the lecturers who knew what I wanted from the course, and since I’ve started, they’ve been so supportive, understanding and kind. As Student Governor, I share news and views from other students with senior members of college staff. This includes the achievements and success of individuals and groups, as well as bringing any suggestions from students to meetings about student life and how to improve the college.

FAQs IT’S NORMAL TO HAVE LOTS OF QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT COLLEGE IS REALLY LIKE. WE BELIEVE THE BEST WAY TO LEARN ABOUT COLLEGE, SETTLE ANY NERVES, AND FEEL PREPARED FOR LIFE AFTER SCHOOL IS TO VISIT US AT ONE OF OUR OPEN EVENTS. You can talk to current students, lecturers and our Student Services team about any questions you have, before discovering college life for yourself. See page 3 for the next event!

HOW WILL I PLAN MY COLLEGE WORK? At the start of term you’ll receive a Student Organiser which includes a diary, as well as an Individual Learning Plan. These help you to plan your time and manage your assignments.

WHAT WILL THE CLASSES BE LIKE? You’ll have a variety of teaching and learning experiences. These can include workshops and skills sessions, lectures, seminars, discussions, student presentations, and independent research.

WHAT IF I NEED HELP WITH MY WORK? We advise you talk to your tutor first. They may be able to provide all the help that is needed, but if not our Skills Development Centre is designed to support you with skills like writing assignments or organising your time.

HOW MUCH HOMEWORK WILL I BE SET? This depends on your programme, but you’ll generally be set a piece of assessed work every three weeks.

WILL I HAVE ENOUGH FREE TIME FOR A PART-TIME JOB? Yes, it’s possible to work outside of college time, although you shouldn’t work more than 12 hours per week, as this can badly affect your success at college.

CAN I GET FINANCIAL HELP WHILE AT COLLEGE? Some students are eligible for free meals and help with other costs, from bus passes to buying a uniform. See pages 22 and 23 for more information.

WHAT DOES THE COLLEGE DO TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THEIR COURSE? In the summer before your programme starts, you’ll be invited to attend Summer College. This helps you make new friends, get to know the college, meet tutors and prepare for your programme.

DO PARENTS/GUARDIANS RECEIVE REPORTS? Targets for your achievement are fed back to parents/guardians and students in a minimum of two reports a year as well as at parents’ evenings. We’ll also invite parents/guardians in to college in September to explain how they can contribute to your success, the requirements of the programme and how to get in contact with the college if needed.

A LEVELS TAKE TWO YEARS TO COMPLETE AND ARE A GOOD CHOICE IF YOU WANT TO DEVELOP A HIGH LEVEL OF ACADEMIC SKILL

A-Levels

APPLY ONLINE AT FARN-CT.AC.UK

A Levels are an exciting chance to explore the subjects you’re passionate about - in real depth. At Farnborough you’ll study in a friendly department, with its own dedicated area and team of highly qualified lecturers. Students love the welcoming environment here which feels a lot different to school; with smaller class sizes, more chances to ask questions and plenty of time for individual support. A Levels take two years to complete and are a good choice if you want to develop a high level of academic skill, either in preparation for a university programme or to keep your career options open. Although there’s plenty of choice when it comes to subjects, you should think about what you’d like to do after college first. For example, universities may want to see that the degree you’ve applied for is a realistic progression from the subjects you’ll have studied. We therefore recommend you talk to us at one of our Open Events to find out what options could work best for your goals.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You’ll need grade C/grade 4 in English Language and Maths plus at least 3 other GCSE subjects at A*-C. Some programmes have additional requirements: Mathematics and Psychology: Grade C/grade 5 at GCSE in Mathematics Biology, Chemistry and Physics: GCSE B Grade in subject or BB in Core and Additional Science; plus grade 5 in Mathematics

I love the fact that you know the teachers are there for you if you need them. They’re really close to the students and treat you like adults. The whole college is really good for me, because it’s quite small and feels a bit like a family – I think this makes it easier to make friends and get work done. I’m really into Biology at the moment because I like finding out how humans work, and think that it’ll be helpful for what I want as a career.

I chose to work with illustration by completing a book that took a modern twist on Disney covers - it was challenging, but worth it! After the degree I’m starting here, I’d like to specialise in magazine designs and rebranding. I think the experience of the degree will set me up for work and I know I’ll enjoy studying here as I’ve already had a good time and feel confident in my choice.
