Winter driving tip: How long should you warm up your car for? Canadian winters can be bitterly cold, so warming up your car is essential. Depending on where you live, 60 seconds might be all the time you need. According to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), warming up your car for more than 60 seconds can be an expensive, inefficient and a harmful
waste of fuel. In cold weather, use a block heater on a timer for two hours and then start driving easy and let the car warm up on the road. Letting your car idle in the driveway for more than 60 seconds, either by a remote starter or starting it yourself, wastes fuel and does not adequately warm up all your
vehicle components such as the transmission, tires or the catalytic converter. Driving your car “smooth and easy” is the best way to warm up your vehicle’s components. Of course make sure your windows are clear before you drive away. If drivers avoided idling by just three minutes a day over the year, Canadians

Christmas driving tip: Spend your cash on gifts, not gas (NC)—If you’re planning a road trip this holiday season, try to avoid the temptation of speeding to get you there faster. Experts have proven that driving over the speed limit, even by as little as 10 to 20 kilometres an hour, is like throwing money out the window and results in minimal time saved.
According to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), a 100-kilometre trip will take you 60 minutes at 100 km/hr and 50 minutes at 120 km/hr. If the average fuel consumption of a vehicle in Canada is 10.6 litres/100 km - at $1.00/litre it costs $10.60 to travel 100 kilometres. Increasing your speed
to 120 km/hr will use 12.72 litres/100 km or $12.72 to travel 100 kilometres. That’s like throwing a Toonie out the window every 100 kilometres or every hour! If your trip takes you 10 hours each way, there’s $40 you could be spending on something else. EcoDriving is a smart,

What is a hybrid vehicle anyway? Hybrid vehicles combine the internal combustion engine and fuel tank of a conventional vehicle with an electric motor powered by a battery. The combination gives motorists the driving range and convenient refuelling capabilities of a conventional vehicle, with more environmental benefits. Hybrids achieve improvements in fuel efficiency by using the electric motor to supplement engine power. Many hybrids can even operate at low speeds using only the electric motor. Their batteries never need
to be plugged in and are recharged by a combination of the engine and by recapturing energy normally lost when braking. Fuel consumption and emissions can be reduced by up to 50 per cent compared to a similar gasoline vehicle.
