ability to carry up to 40 per cent more weight than a comparable standard tyre. A 10 per cent increase in the footprint area helps to reduce soil damage and the improved lug shape is designed to provide an increase in driver comfort.

Axles and wheels Nottinghamshire based Tyremart was established in 1979 when it became the official distributor for the Colaert range of axles and steering systems from France. Another major development came in 1990 when Colaert became part of the international ADR group of companies, and this opened up new business opportunities for Tyremart and eventually resulted in Tyremart being bought by ADR in 2000. Axles for agricultural equipment are still a major part of the ADR Tyremart business, which supplies rigid and steering axles throughout the UK. The company also carries large stocks of agricultural wheels plus a range of suspension systems suitable for trailed and self-propelled equipment, supplying equipment manufacturers as well as individual

Power on the Land customers. Because of the highly specialised nature of the equipment it sells and the importance of correctly matching axles and wheels with braking and steering systems, Tyremart also offers an advisory service for customers who need guidance when choosing new running gear.

Rubber track market Crawler tractors have been available for more than 100 years, but their recent popularity follows the introduction of rubber tracks by Caterpillar in 1987. As the company name suggests, the Brocks Wheel & Tyre business is one of the leading specialist suppliers of agricultural wheels and tyres, but it has also expanded into the rubber track market. The business, based on the Brock family’s farm in Essex, supplies complete track systems plus replacement tracks to fit most of the leading tractor makes and for other equipment such as trailers and combine harvesters. The company’s interest in rubber tracks first started about six years ago when it was offered the agency to sell the Bridgestone range, and it now offers a choice of different makes

of track including the popular Soucy range. Interest in rubber tracks has been increasing, said Percy Brock, and he expects to see sales continuing to grow. Farmers are increasingly concerned about soil damage, he says, and rubber tracks have proved to be an effective way to reduce compaction.

Reducing soil damage Lincolnshire based Sly Agri specialises in supplying rubber track equipment, offering the IMTS range that includes complete track systems for powered and trailed equipment. With many of the biggest self-propelled harvesters now mounted on tracks or extra

width tyres to extend the footprint, the main cause of soil damage during harvesting is often the trailer, and replacing the wheels with an IMTS rubber track system can be an effective method of reducing compaction. The Sly Agri range also includes the EnduraTrax range of replacement tracks, but another option for dealing with worn tracks is to use the Endura-Retrax service that retains the main carcase of the track but adds a replacement tread. The retread service is said to offer up to a 45 per cent reduction in operating cost while restoring the tread depth to maintain an efficient performance. ■
